Death and the afterlife...
« on: December 15, 2003, 11:08:20 pm »
First off, I\'m just going to point out that this is a wish. If you don\'t like it, then don\'t I care if you tell me I\'m stupid or that I\'m n00b for thinking the way I do, because I wont even bother to read it. :)

Those who have played Diablo2 Hardcore or some other game with permanent death would know what I\'m thinking of here:

\"When you die, you stay dead.\"

I\'m not saying that you have to fight lowlevel mobs to make sure you wont die, but I\'m quite certain that it\'ll teach people to pay attention when they\'re fighting, and maybe people would even start bragging like the folks of old used to. \"Woah! You should\'ve seen it! It was like 50 feet tall and it had seven legs, and I swear that I nearly got killed by it! It was just so huge!\"

But of course should be ways of ensuring your resurrection if you should happen to die, but resurrection isn\'t cheap. :)

Or maybe you could just become a ghost when you die, and you\'d have to wander around and find a healer who\'s strong enough to bring you back to life. Then you\'d have to rush back to where you died, and hope that monsters and players have left your corpse alone, so your stuff is still there. :)

Anyways, that\'s about it. :) Go ahead and flame... or something.

Hardcore! That was one of the most enjoyable (and stressful) times I spent playing a hack&slash game before.
I love whenever a good, forgiving (in cases of lag and such) permadeath system is implemented, even though Diablo\'s hardcore was far from forgiving, it really supplied alot of tension and, therefore, fun.  The problem, is that, due to all the lag so prevelant in MMORPGs, I would imagine there are quite a few lag related deaths; for instance:
\"I\'m a lvl50 mage on the road; lookie, there\'s a mouse!  Here boy, want some cheese -- Bite me, will you?  Magic Missle! Argh, lag... Come on now, Magic Missile!  Oh god no! Magic Missile, please! Nooo....!\"
*You have been killed by a level 1 mouse, your account has been deleted, have a nice day*

But alas, we\'ll never see that feature here...
(Is this actually the first time this has been brought up? *shrugs*)

1) stop talking about levels, it\'s pretty clear now we won\'t have levels in PlaneShift

2) i\'m sure i\'ve read something about this before.. amd i like the idea of having a afterlive where you have to do something to get back.

There is a recently active thread in the PVP, PK, Theiving, and Incessant Whining sub-forum where the issue of death has been brought up.  (The thread was named \"More Death=More fun\" )  Unfortunately it\'s been saturated with posts for and against PK.

I support the afterlife world, mostly because I think Permanent Death would be too frustrating for many people (although perhaps they would get used to it..)
Having death result in a loss of your time (escaping from the Halls of the Dead or whatever) makes it something undesirable without having to destroy the character.

Still, it would hardly be any fun to assassinate some high-ranking guild member, only to have them come waltzing back in 24 hours later.  Harsh death penalties are something we see very rarely in computer games; perhaps they would improve the dynamic of Planeshift.

I would be interested in hearing the developers opinions on death (as well as anyone else!)

RE: Levels
Despite the fact that there are no D&D style \"character levels\", I think it still makes sense to talk about a \"high-level\" character vs. a \"low-level\" character.  You can\'t say \"oh look, I\'m 5 levels above you, yay for me\" but it would be possible to base the cost of recovering from death on some value that indicates the total life experience of the player.

Well if you read Crystal Way description, you can find a line that says one can even bring person back from death.
That might be a hint :)
Also I thought devs said they want it like that... not sure tho...

i love it when someone refers to my posts... it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy... *ahem* but back to more important matters i think that dfryer is completely right in agreeing with me. there should be harsher penalties and although permenant death would be a cool concept it would be unfeasable but at the same time no penalties would be awfull.  :P

I\'d rather see the difficulty of resurrecting you based upon the seriousness of your wounds.

What about the creation of one or several \"resurrection insurance company(ies)\"? You pay them a monthly fee, and whenever you die they know it and manage to retrieve your corpse and resurrect you. Of course the more you die, the more the fee increases. Debts could be negociable (think about charisma and trading), that would pressure people to not make a wrong step when trying to make quickly a lot of money to pay back.

well if you died it your wounds would always be the same. say you have 40 hp. everytime someone is going to do 10-5 damage each time. so the most your going to see for a long time is 3 or 7 points of damage over your hp.

Hey Gronomist, you should Search For Death and the Afterlife, I posted an identically titled post like this, and there are some pretty intelligent solutions, (as well as some stupid ones) to the problem. Again, only if you are interested.

Oh, and I hate your idea, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! :O  Flame, flame, flame, flame, flame, flame.  X(

There, now let\'s leave Gronomist alone to his perfectly stupid idea.  ;)  So, now who has a perfectly stupider idea? :P

Harwen - No matter what you think, I\'ll always be a \"her\" or a \"she\". Thank you. :P And yeah, stupid idea, but still great. :)

What happens after you die is already decided. I thought it even was offiecial but I guess not.

It is very cool however.

But if you challenge the god you will die permanent. If you would win however you have beaten the game.
Put the pot down, no dont take another puff!, put it down. Thank you.

Challenge the god.... sure why not. When I get Uber and become a demi-god, then I kick the god\'s butt good. :D
