Interior Lag
« on: December 29, 2003, 10:03:26 pm »
When I am outside in the town I am completely lag free but when I turn towards a building that you can enter I completely freeze until I hold the arrow key and am facing the other direction. I have made it into the red temple thing but it takes a lot of time to get there because you have to get faced in the right direct from a distance then just hold up and eventually I will appear inside the building.

I just installed a graphics card last night and it seemed to be working better without it (integrated video). I lagged a lot everywhere I went without it but still I could go places.

Windows XP
Pentium 4 2.7ghz
256mb RAM
GeForce 4 MX420 64mb
DSL Connection

Using 640x480 16bit.

Im going to try and get more memory soon since I know that is going to be everyones solution. It just seems odd to me that I lag only facing an entrence to another area. If I walk around to the back of the temple then there is no lag.

I get a few errors in the console when it starts. Something about CEL and a few after it. If they sound important I can post them.

when you plugged the new video card, which drivers did you use? Try getting the latest ones from the vendor\'s homepage. Even if you used the ones that came with the graphics card, they might not be quite up-to-date or just buggy. Even worse if you use the windows standard-drivers, which (knowing MS) probably do not support a lot of OpenGL-stuff...

I also get the stuff with CEL, but do not experience your troubles, so I just guess that\'s not it.

I updated to the latest nVidia drivers when I installed it. I get an average of about 30fps in the spawn area, sometimes going up to 50+ when not moving, and when I turn towards and entrence to another area I get less than 2fps. This makes it nearly impossible to go anywhere but the main part of the city. I was just inside the temple a little while ago and I was getting 0.55fps.

I changed it from 16bit to 32bit and I lag a lot less now. I can actually go places!

The engine renders the little details of every building even if you\'re far away from them, it seems.

When reading this post, please remember that I already had a couple of beers, so if you find any typo\'s, they\'re all yours :-p (dammit, how do you do the tongue-smiley? PM me, PLEASE :D)

Concerning the lags... I sometimes have them too, like everyone else does, but not in specific places, and sometimes they won\'t go away. The game\'s code seems to be trapped in an infinite loop. I still can chat in the game, but I lag about 20s at the beginning, increasing constantly. If this \"special lag\" occurs, I am absolutely unable to move or turn my character. RAM usage jumps from 284M to 300M by 200kB/s. Reaching about 300, it drops back to 284, never stopping. Does anyone experience the same problems from time to time? I don\'t exactly know what\'s causing it, might just be a local problem with my computer or its settings. As I don\'t know that yet, I did not file a bug report yet, I\'d first like to know whether I\'m the only one...

(Oh come on, my English could have been a lot worse ;))

Well the high RAM useage is normal... I never bothered to figure out the exact amount of RAM used, but on my system it is near 300 MB as well.

As for the \"lag\" this is just due to the unoptomized state of the code, and due to this, some people with slower systems end up with higher fps.

For both of you, I suggest trying out different graphics settings (even the higher ones) as my best performance state is at 1024x768 32-bit color & full screen.  Other resolutions like 640x480 end up with my fps ranging widely and the average is actually slightly lower.

PS. The tounge smiley is  : P (without the space)  :P

:P ... works *g*. I am absolutely sure I tried it before... hum.

Anyway, I have an Athlon XP 1800, 512 MB DDR RAM and a GeForce III TI 200, not high end but not too old I think. The game is running just lovely most of the time, I only experienced this trouble twice..
