If a game is a true RPG then it is imposible to win, there will always be other paths to take  and if you truely feal that your character is stuck in a dead end its done everything it could which doesn\'t happen oftem, go back and try again, take another path, a slight change in attitude might lead your player to places in the game that you didn\'t know about before.

Games like Jedi Outcast, Sim City, and age of empires are winable games, to some extent so is morrowind, you are trapped in the confines of the programers mind,  sure in morrowind you can make another character and join another guild, or all of them... however it is a dead game... There is a limit and there is no way to get past it.  With Planeshift on the other hand there is no limit, Sure there will be quests but Planeshift offers you something Morrowind cant, or everquest for that fact... it allows you to use your imagination to the fullest.. Take Kada for an example,  She used her imagination and look what she got out of it, a tavern in game that is named after her and one that most concider to be hers wether thats true or not.  I haven\'t heard of everquest doing this,  Planeshift Takes Computer RPGing to the next level,  It is a changing world WITH NO LIMITS.  Your story can and will influence the developers and the devs will concider the dirrection your characters are going and make new paths for them new opertunities, not just quests but the ability to write the quests yourself, to make a name for yourself , not just because your that lvl 180 mage who is the best in the game but becasue your that assasin who has no concious, that person who always helps out tries to do it even if its \"seemingly impossible\" for him/her too.
So can you win a true rpg? no because theres always a another path to take or one you can try again Becuase its not someone elses imagination your trapped in... its yours and yours will affect others leading the story to new heights and new oppertunities...

Hope i made sense and didnt wander off topic or something :)

Ah, the excellence of the writing. I am copying this whole thread and e-mailing it right now. I was just in a discussion with someone on this very subject last night. All of these are great points.

I have been role playing since I was thirteen and it has amazed me over the years how many people seem to miss the point of these games. It is all based on personal goals. I am in real life a laid back an calm person, but the role of a drunk or rouge is far more fun in some games.

I have played characters that were bent on the destruction of a clan or civilization and I have played the roll of that very civilizations hero. Most of the fun in the pen & paper games was the story of the world and more importantly the story of the character.

The other aspect of role playing that seems to get missed is the fact that you are, playing a role. The character seldom matches the man -or woman- who is playing them. In some way they are representative of the persons inner desire for adventure or longing for battle. While in others they are the long sought peace that that person is somehow missing in their ?material? life.

To make a tired point?
Well said!
