Gameplay plans?
« on: March 03, 2004, 11:46:35 am »
I\'m just  curious as to what sort of gameplay to expect once the combat system is in place, will planeshift be another text N turn based D&D affair? or perhaps a diablo esqe 3rd person perspective live combat system system, first person shooter style perhaps?

so any Devs with a spare second or other well informed personages with said info on what sort of system to expect please reply as I\'m quite curious

thankyou in advance :P

I think we\'ll likely see more of a turn-based combat system. Don\'t ask me why, I just talk to people alot. :P

Well, I don\'t mean \"Final Fantasy\" kinda turn-based... you know, more like NWN. Seeing as the rules use dice rolls etc.

the reason why it\'s going to be a \"turn based\" (like NWN) system is to be fair because of the lag ...people with more lag would get acutally killed faster if it was true real-time. ...yea, it\'ll be the standard dice-based system

this is what i know about the bare bones of the fighting engine ...i don\'t know anything about the details :]
...every rpg engine i can remember of, has a dice-based system (derived from D&D, duh) ...it\'s the details that matter :]

I dont imagine lag would be hat much of a problem if they  were to use a system similar to the method in pristontale wher the packets sent are data  to cover  the worlds actions for the next few seconds that way lag can be covered up and dial up is viable that system does have the problem that there is allways a few second delay between your actions and the world around you being affected by it,

and I will admit I\'m not too fond of turn based mainly because of the stilting it does as, particularly in a  roleplay type of game it drasticaly changes the mode and feel of play from the storytelling to the statistics

of corse a live system could be worse  the mind numbing clickery of a live mmorpg like dioablo would kill even the strongest story

I\"m allso aware that anything other than a turn/text based affair would be a lot harder to program, any  other info peices peeples got?

I always prefered the diablo2 way to the NWN way. I think in turn based games some skills like speed don?t have as much weight as they should in a battle. But I think that if a turn based system is well engineerd it can be both fair and realistic at the same time. Hope that\'s what happens.

I\'ve played with quite a few systems, and I have to say the turn-based one is my personal favorites (maybe that\'s just because I\'m a DnD geek though :P ). And speed is taken into consideration in a turn-based game. Actually turn-base is more RPG-friendly because it\'s your character\'s skills that are being taken into consideration, not your own (i.e. You could play a spellcaster who is weak in combat but manage to beat a warrior simply because you can press button combos in a better way than him if a real-time (like morrowind) fight system was used).

And, well, it\'s an MMORPG. It\'s gotta have roleplaying, and good roleplaying at that.

I like NWN style combat over D2 combat for several reasons:
It is much more relaxed to click on an enemy and watch the battle.
You have more time to focus on specials. That way you can use them more/have more time to plan your actions and strategy.
The problem I had with D2 is that I didn\'t have time to execute specials. The only thing I could do was click on the enemy. And it was dead in a few blows anyway, but that\'s a whole different story...
