Different Ylian Ethnic Groups
« on: March 04, 2004, 06:13:00 am »
I know its too early to tell but the Ylians appear to be predominantly white. Are there going to be like Black Ylians, Hispanic Ylians, or Asian Ylians? Now I stress this loud and clear, I\'M NOT SAYING BAD ANYTHING ABOUT WHITE PEOPLE. Don\'t misinterpret what I\'m trying to say. So in a wishlist format.

My idea is too have different ethnic groups for the Ylian race so people in the future won\'t complain that the game is steotyped to white ylians and try to say that the game doesn\'t promote different cultures and encourages being biast. Besides I\'m like 3/4 Chinese and 1/4 Peruvian. I want my character to look like me as much as possible, I\'m sure you do to, ha!

.... This is a fantasy mmorpg. It\'s not supposed to be based on \"earthly\" ethnicities. There won\'t be any \"asians,\" for examples, because there IS no Asia. Drow-like races, maybe is a concept. But otherwise? Unlikely.

I don\'t think I should be limited to using a certain type of Ylian. Planeshift wants to immerse itself in a powerful MMORPG experience, we\'ll doing this will help them. Take this for example:

Your a manager of a company, do you want to hire a guy that\'s really smart and only speak english? Or do you want want to hire a guy who is bilingual or trilingual? Of course the bilingual or trilingual guy because that person is able to reach out to a larger variety of people which makes him more profitable. But if you only get the guy who speaks english? Well no one else is going to understand him except people who speak english. Why limited yourselves to one when you can acquire many?

Yeah but think about it.  There is no asia in PS.  There is no africa in PS.  So why would you have asian and african ethnicities?

It doesn\'t say that Ylians originated from Yliakum. So in theory the humans came from earth, so maybe different ethnic groups were travelling together to Yliakum.

Yliakum isn\'t earth. I think you fail to realize this. We\'re not on the planet earth anymore. We\'re off in another world, maybe another universe, with different laws of physics, evidently, and different creatures, etc., etc. There\'s absolutely no sense in creating real-life ethnicities.

Have you read the races settings on the main site? It appears that you haven\'t.

Just about all the races are not native to Yliakum. So tell me where the humans came from if they didn\'t originate from Yliakum?

Ummm I think what Karyuu means is that this isn\'t earth.  This is a different planet seperate from earth.  In the Planeshift world there is no america, no asia, no europe.  Yes they came from other places but not earth-based places.  Remember they\'re not humans.  They\'re Ylians.

well I gotta concede to you guys, you have me  befuddled on that one. But don\'t you concur even supposing there are different races that subsidize different cultures, there should be some sort of Intramural Multi-Socialization multifariousness endogenously within the Ylian citizenry?

Why just Ylian, then? Why not every race?

Well what we define as different \"races\" of peoples is just a human adaptation to their surroundings.  Darker skinned people are better adapted for climates with lots of sunlight.  IF the environment in game worked the same as on earth, basically the Ylian nearer the crystal should have darker skin and the Ylian at the lowest levels would be more pale.
This could work to for the other races as well, depending if their body chemisty worked in the same way as an adaptation.

Anyway, that aside :) I would like to see as much possibilities as possible for every race at character creation, so if we could choose the skin pigment of our character what would be great :D

I read the site, and remember this part as well.  From the Ylian description:
Quote
They can have hair from black to white, eyes with wonderful colors and skin from pale to dark brown.
Basically they are the \"humans\" of the human races in PS and can theoretically have any colours humans on earth do.

It\'d be best if they could have an HSL shader for the \"skin\" or \"fur\" or \"stone\" or whatever area of the character that would only be limited by the defninitions of the race.  Be especially cool for Krans, since rocks can have a pretty wide variety of colours.
Ninjas have feelings too.  Mostly they feel like dancing.

if your smart you know humans have different skin color not just because they live somewhere different but becase of temperature and enviormental settings... ylakium could have many different settings that would affect the pigment of a ylians skin. also keep in mine ylakium isnt the whole planet. it is just inside the stalagmite. what if the ylians were outside the on the surface of the planet 10000s of years ago, or even if thier ancestors came to the planet on a spaceship from an earthlike planet. all of this should be considered so we should all not be talking like we know the definative answers.

Lol Whemy your statement on skin color is kind of redundant. No offense, but environment and temp are a reflection of the location, meaning that if you live in a hot, dry, sandy area with dark skin, you are likely from desert ancestry. climate based on location.

Anyway, I think that it would be great to have different ethnic groups-however not at all earth based. No hispanics or asians, maybe a group with similar traits, but don\'t mimic realworld cultures, thats just lame. As for looking like your character, well, this is a roleplaying game. I don\'t think many of us look like giant soldiers with rippling muscles, or like a cat in real life. Different shades of skin will most likely be added (do not quote me on this) as it is in many games and not hard to implement.
