Already Complied Server for MB
« on: June 27, 2004, 10:15:41 pm »
Does anyone have an already complied server that they are willing to post?

What in the world would you need it for, anyway?

I have a MB server, but
1.) it\'s private
2.) it\'s not running
3.) I won\'t post it :P

Why don\'t you just connect to the offical one? I don\'t see the point in connecting to a self-compiled one, since there are no crystal spawns, no npcs and no other players.

I am experimenting with my client and parts of the server. I really dont care if there are crystal spawns. And there are few NPC\'s on the offical MB Server anyway.

Why dont I use the Official Server?

1)Its so damn laggy...if I host it locally it will be much faster. I know that the game engine is part of the reason its laggy but isnt the server hosted in Singapore?

2)See #1

3)Is there really a problem in just posting an already complied server?

Why do you want to have a private server? I know, lag... But if you have a private server what will you use it for? Doing absolutely nothing all by yourself? There would be no npcs, no crystal spawns, you will only have the podium map so you can\'t even see the rest of the small town (for now) that is hydlaa. Also, people who are codemonkeys (i.e. the people who compile the server for fun ;)) generally run linux. I recommend gentoo.org \'s flavor... not the easiest to install, but having finished that rather enjoyable process you have the know-how to compile the server yourself!

If you run a private server. You will literally be doing nothing, with no one, in a miniature nowhere since you cannot use the release art on anything besides the official server.

I could post you a copy of the executable, but that simply won\'t work. you need to have the dlls and all that windows crap. Plus, you may not have libMySql and even if you do, the plugin will be compilied differently and the linux elf format executable (or the mac version, but I only have that for the CB server) will be as much use to you as \"text.txt\" padded to 3.5 megabytes and renamed psserver.exe

Fine let me be alone in an incomplete Hydala just please I really want it. Im HD with linux got wiped months ago and I never reinstalled it (using the dual boot method). I am planning on getting linux back on but for now could you stop being so critical and could someone post a complied server please!

And about those crappy dll\'s could you help me find them?

Truth be told there are only about ten people here who know how to compile the server. A good part of them are using linux. You are using windows. It simply is not possible for a linux user to give you an executable because you can\'t run it. I cannot give it to you because I only use MacOS and Linux when I can help it. Karosh is the only person I am sure has sucessfully compiled the server, but look at his signature and you will find that he is using Arch linux. Maybe someone else could help, but anyone who is compiling and the like is most likely fooling around with the CB code, because the MB code is old hat. Plus, the mb server doesn\'t compilie by default, Well it tries, but it fails in psdatabase.so (or psdatabase.dll for windozers) due to the use of a deprecated libMySQL function that I am too lazy to track down. The Visual C++ makefiles for the versions of CS and CEL that you need are deprecated, if I recall. It simply if not that easy to give you a server-in-a-box ... You would need to have a mySQL server and apache webserver (apache may only be needed for cvs HEAD.. not sure) running already, and you will have to know how to populate the mysql tables for planeshift. There is more to it than \"double click psserver.exe\"

Sorry if this sounds like a rant... (It isn\'t! And I\'ll bit your head off if you day otherwise! :P) I think I need sleep...

Well, not really. Unless you have an amazing computer, almsot all of your slowdowns are not caused by the netowork. If you can\'t even type or if you pause while moving, that\'s a local problem. But if you can type in a few lines before you see them, of if other people are hoppig around, thats network.
There are more than 10 people who can compile it, and one of these threads was about compliing on windoze afterall. And in theory, if it\'s just for your own amusement you could use the officla art/maps, but you\'d want to repalce that before you invite other people.
Also, if you are looking for the devs to get you the files, if you haven\'t heard they are quite busy. They haven\'t even had time to update the parts of the website that haven\'t been changed since MB.

Thank you for providing info THATS helpful (josephoenix you sounded kinda harsh and provided no useful info that got me closer to getting a server for my own use).

I am so not harsh! And if you disagree, I\'ll kill you!

Okay, so maybe I was a little harsh... I sound that way sometimes... I guess its the trials and tribulations of real life spilling into my posts on here >.> I usually hold the view that anyone who doesn\'t have the smarts to compile the server doesn\'t need the server. Don\'t take it personally though ;).

Well if you check out my Model Injecting/Exporting topic you will know why I wanted it. I have no experience in compling in Windows. I really want to contribute models and Im pretty sure that Models are store Server Side. Anyway talk about that in the other topic!

Nope. Models are all client side. If they were server side, you may as well be running a VNC session to the server (remote desktop). If the client didn\'t have the models, how would it render them? o.O
