MONSTER-Ta'Doull
« on: July 29, 2004, 05:19:56 am »

There is a story among the Childeren of the Ta\'Doull who was once two lovers. It is said that a Fairie Princess had fallen in love with a Goblin and in turn the Goblin had as well worshiped the little beauty who glowed so bright. Though once the King of the Fairies learned of this forbidden monstrosity, he had ordered his daughter to never see the creature again. But their love was beyond comprehension of any and they continued to meet deep in the woods. One sunny afternoon, in a grove far from the borders of the Fairie Kingdom, they had met. As well as the King of the Fairies who had followed his Daughter. He made his presence before the two lovers, and cursed his Daughter as well as the Goblin. For if they must continue this love, he would comply with their desires. The King mustered a magic never before used, his hatered twisted with malicious intentions and engulfed the two lovers in brilliant mystical light. Merged the two had, for she who was one with nature and it who was against. Thus the Ta\'Doull became...

The Ta\'Doull eye\'s are strickly made for the night, from which they do most of their roaming around. As for the Day they are blinded from the sun/s. They also possess a Gland which excretes a sticky substance that they use to attach dirt and rock to camo themselves from preditors of the Day light. Though plants tend to grow on them as well, they do not seem to mind. As any who pass a Ta\'Doull will only see their back from which is the same as their surroundings. Carpenters are known to use this sticky substance as well as Publishers of writings from the Gland. Their eye\'s are favored among the alchemists to create potions of night vision. As for their meat, a true tasty creature they be, which cook\'s favor most of all.

They are strong to children and wouldn\'t mind feeding upon them, every child knows not to step on little mounds due to this. As for the moderatly aged, they roam in search of these creatures in hopes to sell on the market.

Level : Low
Strength : Moderate
Speed : Moderate
Intelligence : Low

Items : Resource Materials : Ta\'Doull Gland, Meat, Eye\'s

-edit- oh, the leg looks like it was reversed as the lower leg (top portion) should be overlapping the upper leg segment. It was intentional as I figured with such a body size and the weight of stone it would need a modified joint to place the lower part of leg more directly under it\'s groin (center of gravity). Allowing it to leap somewhat for it\'s victims. (drove a forklift alot at work...they can do some tight dounuts >=)

I was just wondering, ESB,

Do you have a job as a concept artist or something? Or on a background and story team for another game? what you made seems to have a certain degree of polished professionalism that outshines most everything else around here :P

LOL I wish, ummm no the sad part of it all... I never pursued the Art Career. As to the Career type... Retail Management is all I been doing mainly, well nothing now as that started a few days ago =/ But I\'m working on my How to Draw book while the wife pursues her career in Retail Management now. Sorta a trade off due to the competition issues that had arisen =/

As for this toad thing, I guess you can thank the road-apple I seen on the road this morning. During the time I was thinking of something to drop on the board next. Something evil, but then I figured that I should try something on the lighter side...possable Fairie type of creature. Then it happened, a big lump of horse poo-doo just sitting there \"damn that thing is huge\" passed through my mind. Later when I gotten home I started thinking again and Toads started rolling through my mind, of course a big lumpy toad reminded me of the poo-doo.
Then I reminded myself that I needed to look at it from the point of a developer. That it had to be something unique from other games. For newbee\'s to gain skill and monetary compensation from high level players, that would need such resources from noobs. High level players that needed to craft or use such items from to gain skill. Items that would be dependant upon during adventures. A player marketable item/s that could contribute to the monetary circulation in the game. Possable Questable NPC (lost ring attached to the back) etc. Though yet would seem to fit the enviroment/eco-system.
So I merged Fairie with an evil creature type (unknown at the time) along with the toad and yours truely...the horse poo-doo. Thus was the true story of the birthing .... Ta\'Doull. As for the story of it, my Daughter had come in to see what I was working on, so I gave her a bit of a rough idea. \"Fairy falls for a toad, father freaks and blamm, Ta\'Doull\" She said that was stupid... so I said what about Fairie falls for a Goblin....she said it was much better.

ESB, this is extremely detailed & excellent work! I really like this one!
I wish I could draw like that, and then I wouldn?t have many problems making realistic textures of my 3D models?

I hope you don't mind,

But yesterday I just couldn\'t resist starting to model this one:

It is about 30-50% complete (maybe). I just about finished the legs & just started on the basic body shape. I need to put allot more detail into the face & get the body proportions right + Arms & add Warts Dirt & plants to the back. It looks like it is sitting on something invisible, because this will make the legs much easier to rig bones...

This is my first, non-tutorial NURBS model; I decided to optimize one of the legs really quick (Shown with green texture) it has about 150tri. This may be a pain to texture later :D...

I really hope you do not mind, & that you will allow me to continue. Your sketch is so detailed & life-like!  :)

Zeraph, I been using Gmax, though designed for games that support it only. Not sure if it can dump over to the high end programs even though it made by the same company that does 3dmax =/ Curious if you know any download purchase sites for the high end products. Like Adobe Indesign CS I bought for like 35 bucks, but download only... legal btw. No manual, box or anything like that... Think the company name is Ibackups. But would be nice to find a similar company that does 3d programs as well to download, 3500 bucks is a no go with the wife for 3dmax =/

-edit- non of those, buy now, then get crack crap sites. hehe. Hate for the cop\'s to show up at me door.

Here is what I got so far:

I have spent most of my time, optimizing the model from 33K+ tri to only 817tri, I still need to UVMap & Texture the thing, but I need to finish the back first, making it more rough & bumpy. I think I am going to put a dirt or grass texture on the back to blend in with the scenery (as described in the Sketch & Description.)

I think I am going to finishing rigging the thing & give you some basic animations.
Here is a render before optimization (resulting in texture scramble):

Oh, He sorta looks like he is grinning evilly, or is he just trying to look cool? 8) I made that texture myself out of a picture of a real frog & had fun fooling around with spectral levels & such to make it look slimy...

I the process of modeling this I sort of created another kind of Toad/Frog-Like monster I call a \"Quadrafrog\":

But I didn\'t go any farther on this idea in pursuit of modeling the Ta\'Doull!

ESB,
As for obtaining 3DsMax Free, I do not know were you can get it legally, found mine in IRC channel while I was asking around about 3D stuff. (Not sure if it is legal but probably not, I do not have $2k right up front to spend on my hobbies?)

If you are a student, I hear you can get a discount on 3DsMax so it will cost you about 500$ or is that Maya? I do not know?

If you are looking for a Free Legal alternative to 3DsMax then I hear that Blender is excellent: http://www.blender3d.org/
You could also try Milkshape & Wings3D

Well there are alot of faults with the model, but I wouldn\'t even be able to make a square so I can\'t complain.

Here\'s some things that immediately stand out:

  • Hands, way too huge.
  • The hind feet are too small- it almost gives the impression that you used the feet as hands and vise versa :)
  • The legs are attatched too low on the body- looks too humanoid. On ESB\'s picture, the hip joint is almost halfway up the length of the body.
  • He looks like he\'s squatting when his legs should be bent to their extreme and his feet should sit either side of his bum.

Fix those and it should be well on its way to looking like an accurate representation :) great work!
