A Pterosaur:
« on: August 12, 2004, 04:01:38 pm »
Well, I got my other computer fixed (been making a Guild Hall for my guild...) but I did find time to start to model this one really quick. I didn\'t have time to look-up Pterosaur, so I sort of patterned it after a Pterodactyl (about the same thing right?); only I made it so it didn\'t need a settle (you can ride bareback), the back looks almost like a comfortable seat. :D Well anyway the model easy NURBS it took less time to make it this far:

This particular model has over 11k tri right now but I need to optimize it & stuff...
Well, if you have suggestions on how to make it look better I\'ll accept them...
(I want to try for a Klyros or Magura later but the Magura will be harder because of the hairiness...)

Nice job Zeraph :) One question though- is the bump on his back going to be a saddle?

I am not sure, I was thinking that, but maybe the people in Yliakum have bread & manipulated them to be comfortable to right without one? Not sure yet?

I guess the ever-knowing mods are  right (As usual).

Zeraph really does have some skill with modelling 8o  8o  (My favourite thingy he did was the siberian tiger enki skin!)

Blender\'s interface is rather complicate, ( even I haven\'t taken the time to figure it out) For a beginner, I would suggest Wings 3D, its a very easy to use program, (until you get to UV mapping), but I would start with Wings.

One thing, why NURBS?
First thing is that hardly any engine (i know the PlayStation can handle nurbs but i have no idea how and to what extend) makes use of nurbs.
Second thing is that max absolutely sucks in modelling with nurbs, if you want to model that way take maya, take ixs, take rhino, take any kind of package but don\'t take max.

Well, it is my second model I started on with NURBS, I like them because it makes it easyer to make more biological curves & such...
These are high-res render version? I convert them to mesh & optimize them to whatever polycount I want, so I always come out with something like 1k instead of 11k.

I like how quick it is to model with it, it?s the optimizing that is the trouble? Max is all I got right now...

I worked on it some:

I haven?t done much with the feet, it is optimized now @ 626tri?
I am going to add finders & toes & stuff, but I estimate it being about 700tri when done, maybe more if I have to add some more flexibility to the wings?

I love your work man, I get a kick out of watching people progress. On ehting though, to be honest, I liked it better with the long pointy tail. Just me probbaly.

Does anyone have a link to a good site to learn about UV mapping. I really want to start making Skinns and Moddels but I have no UV knowledge and the LightWave tutorials (on their site) are terrible. I just upgraded to Miya :) but, again the UV mapping is giving me problems.
