FS#5060 - Swords crafting bug after server update

Hello everyone.
After server updated today I have a problem in working with blades.
I have Blacksmith-41 and Sword Making-23. I could craft simple sabres before, and quality of my blades were about 150-190.
But now very weird things happening.
1. Quality of blade raises up to 300 just in result of heating. So, I have managed to get a Dull Saber Blade 300/300 only by heating and quenching it.
2. I cannot sharpen a saber blade. A sharpening stone tells me “This is a bit beyond your skills at this moment”. I tried to reshape a blade in order to lower a quality of blade, but even 183/183 quality blade cannot be sharpen.
3. All “Sharpen…” entries have disappeared from my “Book of Blades”.

This was happening at Harnquist smith shop right after update. I did not change location, just returned to forge and proceeded working. I moved to Veja’s equipment and this phenomena reproduces there as well.

The task blocks this from closing

Points 2 and 3 are fixed.
Point 1 is a duplicate of PS#5059

confirmed

Mishka Laralkes commented on 07.03.2011 14:01

I have the same problem, but also I can’t heat any blade. All the “Forge…” entries have disappeared from my book. Also, the book “Forging Platinum Steel Blades” only tells you how to smelt an iron ore.

Irec commented on 07.03.2011 15:04

All i can do is forge. All the “Heat..” entries are removed from my “Book of Blades” and “Superior Sword Parchment”

Franta commented on 07.03.2011 15:50

Forge = Heat so it should not be a problem. I can heat all blades up to red hot delta (I didn’t tested further yet) using both books. Maybe it is related to blacksmith or sword making level?

Heolion commented on 07.03.2011 15:51

I just made some sabres following the whole process, alpha, beta, delta etc. I made handles too.

Irec commented on 07.03.2011 16:19

Forging is the same as heating? I have made loads of blades earlier, and my levels are high enough. ;-)

Mishka Laralkes commented on 07.03.2011 16:27

It’s not related to my Sword Making or Blacksmith level. I’ve checked Heolion’s book and she was able to heat them with MY own book, but I wasn’t able to heat any blade with HER book. It’s a serious issue.

The “Forge…” instructions have disappeared from my “Superior Sword Parchment”, “Notes of an Axe Maker” and shield crafting manuals, but not from my “Helms Of Darmeth”. This happens to all my other characters, even the ones in different accounts. I will try downloading and installing the client again, though.

My OS is Mac OS 10.6.6 x84 (32 bits)

Note: Irec, forging IS the same as heating. It’s forge-heating.

Heolion commented on 07.03.2011 16:28

I mean the book didn’t change for me. And I just exchanged my book with Mishka’s… I can use hers but she can’t use mine

Heolion commented on 07.03.2011 16:58

I am using linux 64 bits

Elady commented on 07.03.2011 17:03

I had no problems making swords the normal way. Just that when I heated the delta blades 10 of 11 blades went to 300Q just form the heating. Same with sword handles 10 of 11 went to 300 Q in a single heating.

Mishka Laralkes commented on 07.03.2011 17:21

I installed the client again and still nothing, the “Forge…” lines are still missing. I can’t roleplay a blacksmith if I’m not able to heat or sharpen a blade. This last update ruined PS for me, at least on one of my characters, and it’s the most important :/

Malunga Leeboo commented on 07.03.2011 18:40

Few more observations. Posting this in hope it will help the investigation.
1. Changing to next level in both Blacksmith and Sword Making did not change things. “Sharpen…” instructions are still missing in my book.
2. Forging a blade adds 1-2 progression points. One can just forge/quench a blade in order to get quick PP’s. I am not sure about if forging gave me any PP’s before.
3. Quality of shaped blades are now noticeably higher. They have average quality about 210 since I never had it more than 190 before.

Franta commented on 07.03.2011 18:52

I think this can related to the last change in crafting weapons from rare metals, where the needed level was increased.

echong commented on 07.03.2011 19:49

I am also missing all the forge entries in my “book of blades”, “catalog of shields”, and “notes of an axemaker”

Luzino commented on 09.03.2011 13:13

All ‘sharpen’ instructions are missing in my “book of blades” and “notes of an axemaker” books, too (I have several of each and they’re all the same). I cannot make any weapons right now. I’m not a very experienced blacksmith so if there has been an increase in the required making/blacksmithing levels, that might explain it. But it doesn’t seem right that you cannot sharpen a blade at all at lower levels.

Scott Gibson commented on 09.03.2011 19:13

I think all of the symptoms shown here are explainable as due to changes in skill levels required for sharpening, forging, and heating.

Daevaorn commented on 10.03.2011 00:41

Well if one is not able to sharpen a blade with BS 40+ and SwM 20+ as described here, the symptoms clearly indicate something is wrong, whatever the changes to skill levels may have been. With these levels you should be able to produce a sabre!

Franta commented on 10.03.2011 01:23

IMHO all these processes like forging (=heating), quenching (cooling) and sharpening should be possible at the same level as you can hammer it. These are only related to blacksmith (and were giving practice in BS only at low levels, when I remember only until level 10 or 20, it never gave any practice to the main skill) and also how can one practice sword/axe/knife?/armor?/shield? making, when he can only make alpha blades or handles or just hammer ingots/stocks into items, but can’t re-hammer it again to get more practice without extremely large amount of new material?
From my own research:

BS level 79 & Sword Making 21 - everything works well
BS level 42? & sword making 32 - impossible to forge/sharpen/quench?

Result: It must be the BS level set too high (even setting this to higher level than 2 or 3 is too much while you need like 50? ingots with level 2 to make handles and even more with every additional level). Well, maybe level 10 for BS can work with notice like “Please first work with some material before you will be able to work with weapon/armor/shield parts”, but anything more will just distract new players.

Scott Gibson commented on 10.03.2011 16:15

For me, it is now fixed. I can sharpen dull blades again, and my blades don’t go to 300Q from quenching (in fact, the qualities don’t change at all during heating and quenching of blades).

weltall commented on 10.03.2011 16:17

it’s not fixed. it was reverted the bug is still in the data which should be placed there

Stefan commented on 12.03.2011 22:21

1 No idea, hopefully solved as part of the other fixes.
2 and 3 Fixed on weltall server, please retest.

weltall commented on 13.03.2011 07:06

please test it on the development server first

aurelynt commented on 14.03.2011 22:10

Ok, here are the results of my tests on the test server with the same stats as the original reporter:
1. Confirmed. Following the usual process, I could get a 300/300 super heated dull blade. Instead of hammering it, I quenched it, and effectively got a 300/300 dull sabre blade.
2. Fixed.
3. Fixed.

Malunga Leeboo commented on 15.03.2011 11:55

Sharpening entries have returned for simple and rare blades on 10 March, I was just waiting comments by Weltall about “it’s not fixed”. Everything is ok now both with books and crafting process. Thank you very much!

Franta commented on 15.03.2011 14:24

Did anyone tried to make Q300 item by forging/quenching with lower BS level (say 10)? I don’t think it’s possible. And even someone can see it as exploit, it should be possible at level 40 while it is possible to do so in other processes. At least as long as this uses only BS and not the weapon making skill. Maybe I am wrong about this and other people see it otherwise but I don’t think it’s a bug. I remember when it worked this way in 0.4 and nobody complained about it and also that I was unable to make Q300 this way at level 15 in BS even after half hour of forging/quenching 5 sabre blades (when I remember correctly, my best Q was about 250 but often between 150 and 220).

Scott Gibson commented on 15.03.2011 21:39

Franta, the difference here is that I can make 100% of my blades and stocks 300Q in only 1-2 heat/quenches each, or at least I could when this bug was reported. While I may think that I deserve a break due to the amount of work I have put in to get my bs level up, perhaps this is a bit too easy and is unfair to others. It is very difficult to get a proper balance in crafting, and I suspect most would agree that this isn’t balanced.

Franta commented on 16.03.2011 00:46

What I mean is that when you have high BS, then it should be easy as you only use BS for heating an quenching (maybe with lower range of the final quality against i.e. hammering raw material) but still possible. When you assemble the weapon, it will still change the quality down or up depending on the weapon making skill. Do you think that it is fair that when you have BS level 60 and you can’t improve the quality by this? Of course it should work only with higher levels, equal to other crafting skills at the same level, so (from my observation) at BS level 10 the quality could rarely get over Q200, at level 20 possibly Q250 and with level 30 it could start to be possible make Q300. In real life you can also change the quality of the material by heating and quenching - it’s called hardening and tempering. And it is used in weapon crafting as well. Too much hardened steel will more likely break while too tempered weapon will have tendency to bend.
When it is possible to make Q300 with 2 rounds at BS level 5 or 10, it’s of course bug, at level 40 it should be equal to the hammering so maybe like 5-8 rounds.
Just my opinion and I will stop this discussion from my side. I just wanted to show all aspects of it.

Stefan commented on 20.03.2011 20:23

Point 2 and 3 have been confirmed fixed.
The 1st point should be fixed on weltall server.
It is the same as PS#5059 so i’m closeing in favor to that report.
