FS#1834 - Dwarves position / moving / ghosts / invisible / training / crafting / mining glitch

It appears that all the dwarven player characters are having some degree of problems with "ghosting" as it were. Im unsure if this is covered in another task or not.

Using a dwarf for a character, and a guild member, results in the basic scenerio here:

Dwarf can be moving and have another dwarf instantiate itself where the first is, or nearby… the new dwarf is not related normally (sometimes it is your own "ghost").

I can, say be on the map bdroad1… I can visually affirm being on that map, guild "memebers" tab shows me to be on same map.

Here is where it gets interesting. User can physically not move (no movement animation, no change in map, no movement keys pressed) and using the system tab on the communications window (in-game) repeatedly issue the /pos command, and see that their position is constantly changing, not only within the same map. but into other maps as well.

To trade/buy/pickup is problematic as items/(n)PCs physically standing next to each other on the same map. The jumping position of a dwarf makes it hard to target successfuly to complete these actions. Sometimes they are successful, sometimes the "not close enough" message is displayed, and sometimes it looks like the prefered "target" is selected, but the right-click in the targeting does not bring up any menus (as if the item/(N)PC isnt there or too far away or not there)
Other players sometimes disappear on-screen as the client is rendering according to map and position, so Items, NPC's, and PC's can be there but not be there, or the reverse not be there, but be there.

The task depends upon

Xordan added a fix that was compiled into laanx, a bunch of people tested and said it was fixed, I verified also.

Note this does not cover the "invisible npcs", "random client crash", "displaced/missing portal", "stamina glitch", "sector couldn't be loaded", bugs; or any others that appeared about the same time that some people have confused together ;-)

This seems to be a double from the task " FS#1782 " or " FS#1827 "?

Steven Schwartfeger commented on 03.07.2008 08:47

Ok, I have been closing all these type of reports duplicate of  FS#1692 … but I don't quite know if it's the same issue anymore, and it seems to be a bad word combination for the title, nobody is finding it. So I will leave this one open, modifying the title to make it come up in searches hopefully, and make it the dwarf ghost report.

I suspect this issue could be the same as  FS#1753 ,  FS#1832 , and  FS#1792 , maybe more.

I played as Vornne, a ylian, the other day for at least an hour; I never saw anything unusual. Then today I created a dwarf character, and soon after login I kept seeing another male dwarf character… and also getting a lot of "got DR with unknown id" messages, but all with the same number… it seemed they corresponded with the times the dwarf appeared. Who by the way was a real player, I talked to him in tells. after a while of wandering around and having the dwarf show up and disappear, another dwarf appeared a few times; I then logged out. When I log back in, there was a period of time when all was normal, then the original dwarf started showing up again… the next strange thing was two random chat messages said by my ghost in main, though from contacting him, he was in another sector; and also a sit down message about him. The next thing was wierder still, I got a whole bunch of system messages like:

"Got item update for invslot_1235521: /planeshift/naturalres/ingot01a_icon.dds -1 0 Steel Stock"

but, it was a new character, no way near any crafting stuff, never touched stock in his life. I asked my ghost if he was making stock; he said yes, he was in gugrontid (I was in hydlaa_jayose), and he had made 4 stock, the first 3 had been picked up fine, then he couldn't pick up the 4th for a while, until he rotated the character or something. Next, I tried standing still, and waiting, for a bit… instead of appearing near me and running past then disappearing, he appeared exactly at my position, not moving; I also walked slow in one direction, the ghost appeared where I was about when I guess the last DR message was sent, and disappeared about a second later. I saw this a few times, then another dwarf replaced him as my ghost for a few times, then I quit the game.

Also see: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=32875 for more info.

Which leads me to think this is a problem somewhere in the server, where it maps entity id's to clients or connections… it seemed like the inventory move message had his data, but my client/entity id. And likewise with the dead reckoning message, it seems to me that my DR data got mixed with his eid, and got sent to me.

edit: I forgot to say, I also got the training bug while all this was happening, walked to one side of jeyarp, couldn't train, a minute later after moving about, I could.

edit2: Hmm, even the stamina bug might be explained by this, the server mixes DR messages, and thinks you have run halfway across the world…

Hello!
My character is dwarf and is also serious affected by this bug. I cannot mine, talk to NPC or train. Other players could watch my character and see his chat bubble where is saw myself: at the platinum mine. My /pos check told me to be sometimes at Hydlaa plaza, sometime at Ojapath or Ojaroad2. I could even trade with another dwarf, who seemed to be far away (I think he said it was somewhere near Oja) and trade with him a rat eye successfully. (Hope it tasted.) I also affirm the stamina bug: It occured once. Checking the /pos several times showed no random movement while standing, but on going, running (of course), but also on turning left or right and of course on diggin.

I'd say this is the same as  FS#1782  and  FS#1792 , but not  FS#1753 . I would get the random message of You Shouldn't Leave [strange item I don't have] Here, in 0.4.0, too, and while mining, smelting and casting. I haven't been able to really test it in 0.4.01 though since the dwarf issue overlaps and makes it tough. No training window is because as a dwarf, your /pos is registered on the server somewhere else on the map, so you can't trigger a dialog, train or trade window with a NPC because you are not close enough. Just type /train, /loot, /trade next time, and you'll see the error message pertaining to not being close enough.

Several of us tested this with our dwarf characters the other night. I entered it here, but it seems to have not saved.
Some of the things we observed are:

Male dwarf characters [not sure if it includes females]
-can not talk in main chat to other dwarf characters, including actions.
-can not see other male dwarf characters
-can not mine or use Npc's, view descriptions, of players, /unstick and other functions
-could not read books from shelf at library [read you are to far away, regardless of distance from the book shelf]
-Will all see the same male dwarf character as a ghost, regardless of location on the map
-can speak to the ghost male dwarf in main chat
-Ghost male dwarf will last a sec to 1 min at times
-can speak to other male dwarfs in tells or group chat [not sure about guild chat]
-also effected is the graphics or movement of other characters, which appear to lag or skip. Disappearing for a short time and reappearing ahead in the direction that they are moving.

i can had the difficulties to enter in the winch.

Eric commented on 03.07.2008 23:57

I created a female dwarf, they are exempt. Everything works fine that was specific to the male dwarf, /pos issue.

Johannes Tausch commented on 04.07.2008 07:19

Some "new" behaviour is that the client often shuts down unexpected. I do not know, if it is related to the dwarfen topic, but it makes it even harder, to "finish" any action, like trading or melting, when you are dwarf. Without wanting to offend the team: This task is still assigned to No-one.

Henrik Baasch commented on 04.07.2008 11:59

I would like to add my own confirmation on this: My char, a male Dwarf called Bakin, succeeded in appearing in Yliakum in the new version.
Several ghosts of other male Dwarfs appeared regularly, and we made a group of Dwarves headed by Zwenze to try and pinpoint the bug/bugs.
Almost always, ghost appearance is on top of my position, this is especially notable if rotating.
(He might have further details)
Other symptoms experienced:
- NPCs don't "work" almost all the time, i.e. only when my shown location matches the /pos, they work - otherwise not.

this includes talking, training, trading, inspecting et al.

- Monsters impervious. (known old error)
- When actually "getting through to an NPC, to talk or such, the "Stamina bleed" as reported elsewhere happens… - Zone/map change is really skewed, when coming from Hydlaa and going out of Arena tunnel into Arena main area, region load happens, and I end up in Winch (very odd)
- No other dwarves were observed except as ghosts
- No lag at all, not even in Hydlaa Plaza (wauw) =) - Graphics are very much improved, I have never seen the city look so cool, Plaza is breathtaking to look at. Thank you for that experience to all devs =D
In conclusion, the game is almost unplayable as a (male?) dwarf at the moment, since not much seems to work, (roll 1d6 to see if you can do that, succeed on a 1) ;)
Should we consider dwarves to be on hold until the next update?
No matter what, thx for a huge improvement, I'm sure this will soon be fixed :)
/Bakin

Just some minutes ago I discovered a new feature of this bug: Male NPC dwarf are also affected from the "ghost dwarf syndrom". That means: I went down East Hydla abd qa ghost NPC dwarf appeared. It was Vaieund from the Campfire side and I could even talk to him. Some steps further another male NPC hammerwielder appeared, I do not know. Perhaps he was from winch, where I did not go by now. Some more steps and Grimal Bloodaxe appeared. So they appear suddenly somewhere else for some seconds to a few minutes.

An easy way to see if your char is currently affected is to type /pos several times while standing still. If you get different results then you are affected.

Sean commented on 04.07.2008 12:25

Seems these have all be added, but will still add it in to the list for confirmation.
1. Can't deal with most npc's (Not in range)
2. Targeting of most things, npcs, players, objects (Not in range)
3. Can't use any skill equipment (Not in range, although if you play around with the object, ex. furnace, you can eventually get to use it, but then loose your item your working since your not in range to remove it)
4. Ghosting (I see NPC's from from various areas, BD, Hydlaa) showing up in Grugotnid. I can talk to them, trade, but can't train.
5. Players, I see them warp in and out, sometimes you can talk them in main tab, even if they are in a totally different zone. (example I am in hydlaa, they are in akk central).
6. I did complete a trade with a person who was in Gug, while i was at library in hydlaa.
7. Random crashes, running along and it just crashes to desktop.
8. We can see other players but they cant see us, mostly effects the dwarf race for some reason.
9. Position ( /pos ). While stationary, I can check /pos and see my location is all over the the world. It stays the same for a few clicks then my location is somewhere else all together.
10. Monster npcs. (Not in range to attack, even while standing in front of them)

Enecota Chagisey commented on 04.07.2008 14:41

i just talked with a dwarf, he is able to hammer at anvil if jumps 1 before it, and avoiding other bug, dropping physical stamina he jumps after staying up from sitting position.

loumand commented on 04.07.2008 17:38

Is it to possible to embody dwarves into an other race, temporarily? with all stats and train levels

As long as the cause is not found, it would not help temporarily swapping the dwarf model for another. All other changes would be permanent as in the db it would then no longer know who used to be a dwarf.

Theirah commented on 05.07.2008 08:37

I've had the same problem, but I'm a female enkidukai. I've think its mostly other female enkidukai phasing in and out. I also had a little problem with npcs for a little while.
Mine seems way less severe though, and its stopped with npcs. Still see a couple ghosts here and there as I'm moving.

Lifygen Canton commented on 06.07.2008 03:04

May or may not be a new symptom but I did not see it listed; My Lifygen Dwarf character is not allowed join PlaneShift at all anymore. I get an error "The sector you have entered couldn't be loaded.". Logs that I have looked at: errorlog.txt, log.txt, and they don't reveal any new info.

I suspect that the Dwarf Bug (location /pos bug) had my character (Lifygen) in an "offmap" area when I exited the game. This may be true for many other Dwarves. Hope that your fix places all Dwarves back on valid locations on the map (maybe the Birth/Spawn place?).

Eric commented on 06.07.2008 03:50

Yep, I believe this is related. When you Quit, sometimes your Pos may be linked to another dwarf. It has happened to me and a few others. A few dwarfs were in the Octarchs house, but I was stuck in there, too. I quit while I was in there, big mistake, so I got that same error you describe each time I tried to log in. Pizik was able to restore my postioning to another part of Hydlaa, and that allowed me to log in freely. Should be able to do the same to you. Good luck!
