FS#2435 - Sound for receiving Tells or when ones name is mentioned

At the moment, there is no way to get a players attention if (s)he is not watching PS. I think there should be an extra sound (settable via options) that is played whenever somebody receives a tell and/or whenever somebody’s name is mentioned. Maybe these should even be two different settings in options.

PlaneShift is not an instant messaging client.

No, it isn't. But it is still possible to to temporarily set ps to the background for doing other things. Or imagine the following situation: You negotiated with another player that both of you are going to rp as soon as you both are online. Let's say you are sitting on your computer, but working on other things meanwhile. At the moment, the only way to check if the other player is online is to check back regularly to Planeshift. Having a sound that notices you when you receive "tells" would help here, in the making it easier for people to meet in planeshift.

This seems useful to me as well, Mrokii, for exactly your reasons.

1. This should be added in to the recipient of all chat messages, which is src/client/gui/chatwindow.cpp. Simply look for the playername in any incoming message and pass the sound effect to the SoundManager if found.
2. SoundManager should get a new function to handle "alert" sounds, which play only when the window is not in the foreground. Currently all sound is disabled when the window loses focus, so the function needs to make sure to play in the opposite case.
3. A new Option in the Sounds section of the Option window should be made to allow people to turn the alert sound on/off and a field should be added to allow the player to specify the sound wav file.

This would also be helpful if you're trying to juggle IRC, perhaps an IM window, and 2 or more PSClients (I can run 2 handily and perhaps 3 + a server if I'm careful not to put too much load on the box)

Additional wishes from  bug 1358 :

Would like to have sounds for things needing my attention, specifically trade requests, greets, and introductions, and to have the option to keep them on even if client is minimized, so that if I'm temporarily hiding the client to deal with something else I'll hear when I need to respond to these appropriately and be able to "stay in character" despite real life's little distractions...better than saying "[sorry I was AFK]" or appearing non-responsive in-game.

Also would like a sound for when someone says my name in a chat message (any tab) for the same reasons as above.

and also a bleep for buddylist changes.

Ive started to work on this one. Some of the code is already in trunk (experimental code that is).
Feedback is appreciated.

Made some testing and got a sound when receiving tells :). Now, the sound was the same as the one you get when clicking an icon after right clicking on a character or a NPC, which might just get unoticed. Maybe a more noticeable sound like a bip would be better?

Mathias commented on 04.04.2010 21:49

Yep i thought the same but i had no matching sounds :(
I hope Botanic (ticket is also assigned to him) sees this comment and prepares something ;)

sound for a tell :)

   tell.wav (9 KiB)
weltall commented on 05.04.2010 07:29

it dings also in your own messages and there is no way to set if it shouldn't ding when the client doesn't make sound

Mathias commented on 05.04.2010 10:22

Please note status is "in progress" and the code is experimental.
Implementation isnt far enough to allow decent customization and a lots of features requested are still missing.
Those beep on selfmsg are in because none talks to me ;P
And having a private tester that talks to me all the time would not help either :P

I appreciate your comments and youre very welcome to do more comments.
But please note: work is in progress and code is experimental till i set it "ready to test" ;)
