FS#2647 - PvP areas need an unmistakable warning

Until today I did not know that “Camp Banished” is a PvP area at all. Until I got killed.

I was asked by a GM “if I did not expect that”?! - No, I did not! I see everything as a roleplaying incentive, unless I get a system message warning me about changed world attributes.

This issue is “critical”, because inside this PvP area are quest relevant NPCs. Now, what would happen if you are in a quest dialog with an NPC, and get killed? - You would lose that quest. And if it was a one-time quest, you’ll lose it forever, for your char.

This almost happened to Cadwen today, whom I helped to deliver a “Keg of beer for Filch”. Fortunately the keg was not stolen while we returned from the Death Realm.

There is currently a vote on the forums about this pvp area. http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=34261.60 Vote to make your opinion known. That being said, there are warning signposts all around the area. Also, don't forget that you are doing dangerous errands for a dangerous group of people. Your safety is not assured.

due to oomi's comment changing severity/priority.

I already expected that you don't understand my concern…

I don't question the existance of a PvP area.

I question the unambiguousness of the warning that any PvP area exists! There is no clear and unmistakable warning. As I already mentioned: The signposts are not the unmistakable kind of warning you might have expected.

The whole camp including the signs is a nice incentive for roleplaying a center of evilness - but that is IC. This does not inevitably lead to the OOC insight that a PvP area exists there.

Not only the char would be ambushed by the evil chars in this area. The player is ambushed too - by the game mechanics, or the lack of.

The purpose of a game is to be fun. Being tricked by the game (not by the players) isn't.

If you don't care about this, then expect more complaints in the future from players who got their quests ruined due to being killed in the middle of their progress.

P.S.:

Following your logic, the whole arena must be a PvP area, not only the Dlayo pit. As well as the whole Akkaio-East sector.

Refering to the opinion expressed by zanzibar; and Dajoji understood my concern about the risk of doing quests.

Not everyone goes to Camp Banished with the awareness that a PvP area exists there. Some only want to solve a quest. Or only expected this area to be a roleplaying set, a great piece of scenery - nothing else. Gets killed, feels tricked by the developers, and is angry.

This problem ALSO can occur with the Gladiator Kill Hall. Nothing besides the presence of the Dlayos (which by itself, would not tip off a player who does not already know about the Kill Hall) and the description (which most people won't know how to get at for a region of space) informs people of its presence. If Kaerli was in a mean mood…

Bump.

With the recent incidents near the platinum mine, it makes sense to take another look at this feature request.

I suggest to add an on-screen system message whenever you enter a PvP zone, similar to the one when accepting a challenge.
A button in the PvP panel of the game options should allow the player to disable this sort of notification.

I think this will be a big help to warn new players that have never heard of PvP zone functionality.

There should be 2 OOC messages related to PvP zones:
"You are entering PvP area"
and
"You are leaving PvP area"
Both should be possible to set to be shown as OSD messages, first red, second green or switch them off but they should always appear in system tab. It has nothing to do with IC signposts as character has not any glue about PvP zones and signposts should be IC as they are part of the scenery.
