FS#5183 - "Friendly" spells abuse

More and more players are falling into a nasty habit of casting buffs on unsuspecting and unwilling people. Sadly, many of them won’t listen to reason, so the two options left are fleeing and/or petitioning the abuser. Neither is really satisfying.
It was always quite a pain in the something, but now it’s quickly developing into a powerful griefer’s tool.

To illustrate the point, some of the most common scenarios.

1. The character is badly wounded, and it needs to stay wounded for RP purposes. A Nuisance runs in, casts a series of noob-level healing while not taking any part in the RP itself. Then it (best) just runs away and can be happily forgotten, or (worse) stays around waiting for applause, in some especially hard (worst) cases demanding it out loud. Bye bye RP.

2. You are training combat skills, and all of a sudden you get a stats buff from a Nuisance, thus increasing the amount of time you have to spend to complete the level. Some really persistent Nuisances keep doing it over and over again, no matter what kind of polite /tells they get from you.

3. The Nuisance spots you staying in one place for a while (mining, sleeping, or simply AFK) and starts testing their newly-discovered spells on you, happy and in an elated mood. Most often, it’s CW and, also most often, they get very much upset when asked to stop, no matter how mindful and polite you are trying to be. Logging off is somewhat helpful. Unluckily, it’s helping to preserve their fun but not, by any means, your own.

Like any godmoding (and that’s what it is), the problem creates a lot of unneeded OOC tension. It can be eliminated quite easily though.

Please add an ‘Always decline friendly spells’ or ‘Never accept friendly spells’ checkbox in the Options. Unchecked by default, naturally. The spell still can be cast, but it has no effect on an intended “victim”. Would discourage such practices very effectively and with no need to get into OOC fights over the subject.

I'm closing this bug for the following reasons:
- to fix the reported "abuse" with friendly spells we should entirely remove friendly spells from the game;
- remove friendly spells is not a good thing for an MMORPG an break an essential part of gameplay for some Magic Ways;
- to fix the bug without entirely remove all friendly spells we should develop feature (like the ability to decline duels) that are expensive to do (in term of dev resources) and may be dangerous to use (removing the possibility to receive those spells can be harmful for the target in some situations).
- if a game feature is abused (e.g. spammed) the player should be reported to the GMs.

To add here a rather outdated, but possibly returning issue:

Dweomer spells may be counted as “friendly” too. They are currently not active, but it was really annoying as well to be scanned for your stats without your consent.

Setting this to “New”, because I believe this FR has a good reason. Implementing an acceptance query (similar to duel challenges) may not be as useful, though…

This is a hard problem.
1) Adding an “accept/reject” box would be useless, as it’d create a WORSE problem than it solves (aka modal dialog box spam)
2) The “always decline friendly spells” box would be somewhat useful for chars that don’t engage in mechanics combat. HOWEVER, for those who do, it could easily do more harm than good, as the only way to assist someone in a difficult fight with the current PS combat mechanics is to heal/buff a participant (presumably the PC) due to the combat lockout system. With this checkbox checked, someone could get in over their head with a mob, be trying to disengage hastily (i.e. without issuing a /stopattack), and there is NOTHING you can do to intervene and get the mob off their rear end.

Extending a /ignore type of functionality to buffs would be the best solution I can think of.

Kaerli, before being “assisted in a difficult fight”, one could always uncheck the box again. Or never use the option, if more convenient. Or always keep the box checked, if that person does not want to be… er… “assisted” by any meddling “benefactor” in the immediate area (and that’s why the request at all, so many thanks for offering another solid example of how one can bug the hell out of people by godmoding their characters mechanically).

An ‘accept/reject’ box was never a part of my proposal and yes, it would be half-useless since Accept is there by default.

Mickra: Having to tell someone to flip a checkbox in settings because this feature is global is the kind of thing that sends folks to the DR (for an OOC reason in this case). Hence, this setting should be per-character…that way, you can deal with the actual godmod cases without interfering with folks who prefer to integrate mechanics with their RP whenever possible.

I am years late, but please do something for it. OOC spamming is awful too see and also kills my FPS
