Fan Art / Promotional Poster Contest.
« on: February 24, 2009, 10:38:53 am »
Official Planeshift Promotional Poster Design Contest.

In order to expand the player base on a budget of precisely zero, we are going to need the players to help us.

We have long talked about the possibility of coming up with some kind of promotional poster that individuals could post at schools, public libraries, community centers, lamp posts, the internet, and EVERYWHERE else.

In order to accomplish this we are going to ask the community to engage in a poster design contest!

Things the poster must include:

-Art: It must have original graphics related to planeshift (yes you may borrow art in game to help you make your poster.)

-Design: The poster must be well designed and attractive to the eye, both in the art and in the text. . .

___________________________________________________________________
Here is some possible text, do whatever you want however to make it catchy and make people want to look it up. Disregard this text entirely if you want!

Description: Planeshift is a Massively Multiplayer Online Roleplaying game based on an open source engine. The art and writing content is managed by a charitable foundation whose goal is to produce an ad-free, fee-free, educational online roleplaying game for players all over the world.

How to Play: Planeshift is in an open alpha and many people play full time on our servers. Play along with a wonderful international community here:

http://www.planeshift.it/

How to Help: Planeshift is also seeking talented people to help design and influence the game's final outcome. If you wish to donate some time apply here:

http://www.planeshift.it/recruitment.html

The rules are fairly simple: Each contestant is allowed to make 3 entries for the contest and the contest will be judged by the leaders of the art team who will select 5 entries to submit to Talad for final approval. Final entries will submitted under the ABC license. Talad will select first, second, and third prize, a runner-up, and an honorable mention.

Rewards: At Talad's discretion, the First, Second, and third, prizes will become the official planeshift promotional posters. Prizes for runners up and honorable mention TBD.

Complaint Department / The Cper vs. Rper Divide in Planeshift.
« on: February 16, 2009, 04:44:19 pm »
I am coining the term Cper: The Cper is the Complaint Player who typically spends more time complaining on the forums and IRC than in game doing anything to manifest the changes they'd like to see.

Cpers are in fact killing rp in my opinion many of them began as rpers and now spend a majority of their time complaining that "Rp is dead on Laanx." In many cases these are the same people who have complained of our starting a second server for non-rp to attempt to provide a place for those who don't rp to be comfortable and encourage people who do not rp to play on Ezpcusa. Yet the argument now turns to the fact that we have people on Laanx who do not rp, while at the same time others complain that separating non-rpers will be the death of the game.

Constructive posts that promote rp are rare as ever and even the goodly players that take the time to make their own rp events are nit-picked and cajoled by cpers until they are too tired to dare to try again.

I earnestly urge all of you to seriously consider complaining less and playing more.

Stop making people feel bad about PS.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Happy Valentine's Day Quote a Poem!
« on: February 14, 2009, 11:11:03 am »
TO pile like Thunder to its close,
Then crumble grand away,
While everything created hid—
This would be Poetry:
Or Love,—the two coeval came—           5
We both and neither prove,
Experience either, and consume—
For none see God and live.

Development Team Blog / Got Music Department?
« on: January 07, 2009, 11:45:33 am »
Certain recent developments in Planeshift engine are going to require me to organize and promote an active planeshift music and sound department.

The engine team has given us the capability to do voice recordings for the characters both in npc knowledge areas and quests. This is a big deal to us at the settings department as it will give us the chance to make our writings come to life in a way never before possible. When you couple this with the advent of menu driven quests, we are looking at a whole new way for players to experience the settings of the game.

There are complications . . .

A) The raw amount of time and effort it will take to alter our current content to fit the new menu system is gargantuan and Rizin is heading up that pursuit bravely. This will tie settings devs and prospects up for some time to come so if you are missing new books and quests for a while this is why.

B) Settings will need to do two things to be able to get recordings for our NPCs into the game:

1) Get applicants to help handle post production for the countless hours of audio we will have to create (we also want people who can work on sound effects and ad more auditory cues to various aspects of the game (think footfalls specific to the surface being walked on, and specific to the racial traits of the one walking etc) and add music specific to each area of the game.

2) Once #1 is accomplished, begin to do some community outreach to get the voice actors we will need to to flesh out hundreds of non player characters and tens of thousands of lines of text.

All of this I think is Vengeance getting back at settings for all the things settings is perpetually badgering engine to give us in terms of mechanics . . .

I think he is trying to keep us busy so we stop bothering him.

Overall though this is a very exciting set of possibilities for planeshift to be a more robust sensual experience and we are eagerly getting about the business of delivering some of this content to the players as(tm)ap!

Please apply to the music department if you think you can help on the technical end and if you would consider doing voice acting for your favorite npc send me a private message.

We aren't ready for broad scale recordings until we can get the music department running better, but I am curious about the interest level among the player base.

General Discussion / Rp Covenant Poll
« on: January 02, 2009, 07:40:27 pm »
We the roleplayers, in order to fully enjoy PlaneShift as intended, strive to abide by the following covenant, or, if that is not possible, to respect those who do.

We will...

    * be consistent and stay true to character.1

    * respect PlaneShift's unique game world and always keep character chat, action, and history consistent with the known PS universe.2

    * interact with other players and let the actions of other characters help shape and define who our character(s) become. 3

    * use common sense. If we know an action will upset another player in real-life, we won't do it. This includes yelling at people because they are not playing the way we think they should, insulting others, trolling, or being rude.4

---

1. Playing your character consistently will make it easier to develop their personalty and will aid others in interacting with him/her/kra.

2. Make sure you know what exists in PlaneShift before making anything up. Cell phones, vampires, hobbits, etc. do not belong in this game. Much information can be found in-game through books, quests, and other players. Don't be afraid to ask what you don't know!

3. You don't have to be a great roleplayer to enjoy roleplaying. No one is perfect. Practice and experiment. Meet new people. Go on adventures. Be your character and join in the fun!

4. It is better to accept that others will not always play like you do, and have a large group of friends, than to expect perfection and play alone.

Poetry, Comedy, and other. / Personal Blackflame. . .
« on: December 29, 2008, 09:55:46 pm »
I made this as a Christmas gift for Rizin, I thought I would share.

Your own personal Blackflame
Someone to Damn your soul
Someone who's cold
Your own personal Blackflame
Someone to Damn your Soul
Someone who's bold

Feeling alone
I am on my throne
of Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
Ill make you a deceiver

Take second best
Put me to the test
Things on our chests
We never to confess
I will dissemble
I make existence tremble

Lash out and crush faith
Lash out and crush faith

Your own personal Blackflame...

Feeling alone
I am on my throne
of Flesh and bone
By the telephone
Lift up the receiver
Ill make you a deceiver

I will dissemble
Till all existence crumbles

Lash out and crush faith

Your own personal Blackflame

Lash out and crush faith

General Discussion / Build your own shortcut Xml, share, trade!
« on: December 15, 2008, 05:24:56 pm »
I was thinking about something someone said in irc (and consequently how I like solutions rather than problems) This person spoke of a set of things advisers could say that was standardized.

Then I thought of the uber shortcuts that many devs share . . .

Then I thought the advisers should have their own set of shortcuts to share and hone and purify . . .

Then I thought if they need that, it would be cool if everyone just posted their shortcut xmls and could refine an ideal set of shortcuts . . . maybe we could make it default . . .

Anyway, here is a thread for you to show off your uber shortcut set.

General Discussion / Your favorite / commands
« on: November 16, 2008, 11:46:44 am »
Weltall and I were discussing the default commands and considering expanding the default set to include some others.

We decided we should see how players are using them today as a launching point for such an expansion.

Having played some recent mmos I think that this feature is something nice we have going and most players don't discover how flexible the commands in PS are for a long time . . .

So post some of your favorite shortcut commands here, things you think most players would find useful.
