I can understand your sentiments on furnaces. There are, however, a few more factors to consider.
Firstly, taking out furnaces won't happen, crafting is part of PS, full stop. This basically comes down to the old issue of PL vs RP. Someone mentioned a timer. That's what mental and physical stamina are there for. The trouble is, if you limit the time on furnace use, you'll have to limit the time for things like hunting and cooking, to keep the balance. You want to see the players up in arms? Limit the time they get to pummel monsters.
The core issue behind this is to motivate actual RP. At the moment, leveling is the only way to physically progress you character. RP is fun, but its all make-believe really. What I envisage is a system where RP actually increases your stats. That way, people won't mind hopping off to the tavern after a hard days work for a bit of R 'n' R. If you can come up with a way to do that, you'll have a winner. But the solution to promoting RP is not getting rid of mechanics. That's counter-productive.
