The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: Mary Sue Litmus Test
« on: September 05, 2011, 05:39:19 pm »
Oh hey! This test! :woot: I haven't seen this since I posted that link 4 years ago. Nice to see the numbers have come down since then. I retook the test for Illy and this time I got a 3... I guess she got even less sueish over time. :)

Monala got relatively high scores cause of the crazy huh Candy? ;) I'm surprised that Dannae got up to 21 though.

I remember!  :flowers:

I'd love it if someone made one of these for PS. It could have a section on roleplay depth, like whether or not your interactions with other characters carry forward to future roleplays, or bonus points for allowing your character to permadeath (when it advances the roleplay environment). The survey has a lot on writing characters and forming plotlines, but it has slightly less on how you run your character. It's still awesome though.

Forum and Website Discussions / Re: Karma !!

Because people are starting to point out potential problems, instead of pointing to current problems, my suspicion is that things will be better since there's only positive Karma. If people start getting rewards for Karma, things might get more complex.

When we tried it before and things went bad, it was because negative points were activated. A number of nice people ended up getting really bad scores, so it was decided that the system was being misused. Maybe things will be different since people can only be nice to each other?

My main character got a zero. I feel bad that I didn't get a negative score. :(

Hm, judging from the fact that Diaboli and Xacha are being cut, do you think devs have more cycles?

Wow, I didn't know this. Is there an announcement for players to read?

It seems like an exciting idea. Xacha were underused I think, since their lack of physical prowess has always been difficult to fit into the settings and mechanics. (I always like a good challenge though!) A lot of people have had fun playing Diaboli but I can see how the developers might want players taking a different direction, since their aversion to religion doesn't fit comfortably in Yliakum society. What will happen to the Ynnwn though?

It's generally better to error on the side of being positive, so I agree with the majority of the comments -- we should only be able to give positive Karma. I remember when we had a Karma system before. The mods quickly got rid of it because people were worried it was being misused. The old discussion thread probably still exists if someone has the time to dig it up.

"What is this I don't even?" became "Why do not you agree?"

"Why do not you agree?" stayed the same after ten translations. After 56 translations, it became "Why not?", but it took a while. Interestingly, it was "Why do you agree?" after being translated to and from Czeck, then Finnish put it back into the negative.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: Dungeons and Dragons… IN GAME!!
« on: June 12, 2011, 09:42:37 pm »
I love the idea! I'm not sure if it fits with the settings though, unless the characters involved are youth from noble backgrounds or well-to-do families. I think people play games (especially roleplaying games) in part because they provide experiences that stimulate their minds relative to their daily routines. If you're working all day to train yourself in the event of the next Ulbernaut invasion, or working all day harvesting plants in the dangerous terrain outside the city walls, will you find it relaxing to play a game full of danger and battle? If danger and violence are a part of their daily routine, I think characters will find other forms of entertainment. However if the character's daily toil takes place in a library, perhaps they'll be very open to a D&D type game. Since the Octarch has decreed that everyone must be trained for battle from a young age though, I don't think there will be many characters for which a D&D style game can be considered a complete escape. Instead, you'll have to frame the game as another way to train, and as a way to prepare the mind for future situations or problems the characters may encounter.

lol ok

The aesthetic of that video is really interesting! The perspective evokes the Jabberwocky battle in Monty Python's famous interpretation of Carroll's poem. But the contrast effects remind me of Bakshi's depiction of the Nazgul in his Lord of the Rings animation.

Dad's and Stewart's! Although I've had A&W and it wasn't bad.

Of course, my Italian friends will agree that it's all about BRIO!

And Sangwa, you can get alcoholic rootbeer still. Look for drinks that advertise sarsaparilla or sassafras as the main flavour.
