Forum and Website Discussions / Forum server exhausted?
« on: December 13, 2016, 04:42:16 am »
Am I the only one who experiences very slow and unreliable connections to the forum? Loading a page including all the small images completely takes more than one minute for me. Even completing a request delayed more than 20s one time. Other websites are a lot faster, in contrast. SNMP response (ping) is stable, though.

Forum and Website Discussions / Another day, another login
« on: September 06, 2016, 02:43:25 am »
Since the forum moved, it seems to be not possible anymore to stay logged in for a very long time. Each day I have to log in again, despite checking the box on the forum login page to stay infinitely (or at least much longer than the default 60 minutes). Increasing the number in this form did not help either. Is it possible that the cookie still has a reference to an outdated URL, therefore isn't persistent?

The Hydlaa Plaza / The Vulkan broke out
« on: February 17, 2016, 02:02:31 am »
Nvidia releases the Vulkan Graphics API and first drivers

It allows a more direct access to features of graphic chips than higher level APIs like DirectX or OpenGL with abstraction layers. Programmers using Vulkan are now responsible for implementing a logic to optimally use different features of different GPUs in their applications, instead of relying on graphic drivers having their own strategies to support a wide range of GPUs with the same abstract functions.

Vulkan driver downloads — before you hurry: Do you have any applications designed for it already? ... Patience. For now only for Kepler and Maxwell chipsets (GT 600-900 and related Quadro)

AMD developed the Mantle API earlier, but discontinued it already and recommended to switch to either DirectX 12 or Vulkan (as a kind of successor).

The European Commission and several European state governments tried to rescue obsolete business models, especially used by newspaper publishing houses, by abusing an obsolete copyright law; one of the more famous fails, despite being kept out of the news widely, was the collecting society "VG Media" trying to make Google pay for news snippets of assitiated publishers in their search engine.

So the "Ancillary Copyright Zombies" of the European Commission, first at all the technically incompetent "European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society" GĂĽnther Oettinger (already notorious for quoting lobbyist statements in lack of an own opinion while destroying net neutrality, e.g. "autonomous cars need permanent internet connection, thus requires privileged special services"), renews plans to declare unlicensed hyperlinks as copyright violation.

This sounds familiar, such kind of plans have already been discussed and denied before, due to the risk of criminalizing the whole internet as we know it. But European Commissioners don't need common sense, only greed...

Julia Reda, member of the Pirates party, reported in her blog: Ancillary Copyright 2.0: The European Commission is preparing a frontal attack on the hyperlink

The Hydlaa Plaza / A must-have, not only for trolls

There is an incomplete game which you as player/tester have to fix by changing the assets while the godly developers do anything but cooperate and even take almost all powers from the player. With hardly any degree of freedom, will it still be possible to create a game which is release-worthy?

No, I don't talk about PlaneShift, not even in earlier years ... I mean The Magic Circle. Hopefully without spoiling too much, you may notice that the programmers of "System Shock" are responsible for this big pile of "WTF?!?" moments. It may help if you have a little affinity to programming, but don't be afraid: There may be games where you actually rewrite code, this game doesn't go so far, you only edit entity properties with values borrowed from your enemies; but this is all you need to create amazing and mind boggling tools to act on your behalf. Similar to the Overlord, just with a Minion Construction Kit. But watch out for the developers, their eyes are in game too, and they may not care whether their intrigues may cause even more collateral damage in a game just before releasing its demo ... more or less ...

In-Game Roleplay Events / Of Rats and Arts
« on: February 28, 2015, 06:24:31 pm »
Who let the rats out? — Who, who, who, who?

Miss Opal was a bit clumsy and allowed her trained midget rats to escape from the Amdeneir Theatre. The audience made three groups and roamed the town to find them and get them back. Eventually, the show could be presented and amazed the audience.
__

Overall, it was a funny event, even though the instructions were not totally clear to me (it should have pointed out clearer that a reward is counted exactly when a found rat is grabbed). Also it may have been better to ensure that the groups were about equal in size.

General Discussion / Current state of faction based NPC behaviour
« on: February 12, 2015, 07:13:25 am »
I wondered about a better place than "General discussion" for a rather developer related topic, but it wouldn't have fit better anywhere else... Either I can't make a post at all, or it is too specifically intended for a different purpose.

Reading Tua's blog about the Shikdrok's Crater project, I remembered that factions were planned to alter some attributes of NPCs, like whether they would offer a quest or not. I am curious now how far such dependencies would go. Would you ... trying to imagine an extreme ... have to expect NPCs being hostile, attacking you on approach, unless you have a specific minimum reputation in their faction? Like rogues guarding their home if you don't have, maybe, +20 in Evil or Chaos, whatever faction may exist which shall be related to a gang of rogues?

How much of that is planned at all, and maybe even already implemented in code, just lacking a sample dataset?

This feature might lead to different experiences when passing NPCs in a company, like one char being ignored, another greeted, a third attacked. If chars are organized in a game technical "Group", would NPCs have to make a decision based on something like the average of the group?

The Hydlaa Plaza / Google found the POODLE in SSL 3
« on: October 15, 2014, 09:05:01 am »
Sounds funny, but isn't: "Legacy" secure connections in web browsers via SSL are no more secure. The last version before the new TLS protocol, SSL v3.0, is now officially broken by all means.

You should try to set up your browser not to fall back to SSL3 anymore, but insist in at least TLS 1.0 for https connections. Details here.

In metric, one milliliter of water occupies one cubic centimeter, weighs one gram, and requires one calorie of energy to heat up by one degree centigrade—which is 1 percent of the difference between its freezing point and its boiling point. An amount of hydrogen weighing the same amount has exactly one mole of atoms in it.

Whereas in the American system, the answer to "How much energy does it take to boil a room-temperature gallon of water?" is "Go f*** yourself," because you can't directly relate any of those quantities.

Josh Bazell — Wild Thing: A Novel

The only relevant country in the world (besides Burma and Liberia) where the imperial system is still used, are the United States of America. The rest of the world uses the metric system, because ... well ... the SI system is the base of the modern science. Mixing up different unit systems may lead to disasters, therefore a common unit system for the whole world would be recommended by leading natural scientists. But politicians are rarely natural scientists. And I could imagine that parties who prefer medieval circumstances, like the Creationists, are valuable election donors...

Expressing the opinion that the imperial system should be taught at school appears to emphasize a kind of conservative thinking that doesn't support the human development based on science. Intelligent people are critical and therefore dangerous electors, better keep the populace dumb so they will believe the propaganda more easily...

It seems to be urgent for Great Britain to get rid of its Prime Minister. God save the Queen...

Hello, you great creative authors of wonderful stories.

You might remember that there was once an event where the "Octarchial Society for Progress" rewarded e.g. the Explorers with the outpost, and the Red Crystal Organization with the Den ... and well, the Yliakum University of the Knowledge Seekers was not that successful, but at least got a cooperation contract to review new books for Jayose's library.

Without any contrary notice, this contract must still be active. but we are not receiving new books for reviews anymore. So I wonder if one or another of the recently published or planned works might be suitable to fill the shelves in the expansion room behind Jayose's desk ... there is still enough space.

I can't promise any story becoming part of the game, that's not my job. But I can recommend you to select some which are not too closely related to actually existing characters, which are not too long, which are not too ... mature in content, to have some chance to wake interest.

To get a story reviewed, the optimum would be to get it posted in the forum of the Knowledge Seekers guild. If it was already published here, a permission to copy it there is enough. Books already published in-game are fine too, if you can save it locally and quote the text file in your local "books" directory in the game's application data.

General Discussion / Need help from good in-game race language speakers
« on: February 22, 2014, 11:52:20 am »
Might become a more or less regular thread for roleplayers, who knows...
__

At the moment, I need a bit support with Enkien. I remember that several players are interested in using phrases of this language as often as possible, so I hope one or another would offer a hand for stitching together a single phrase. I am not yet able to disclose in public which phrase, but would report later if requested.

The few active players we have, the less active Game Masters appear to be available.

Yes, I know, becoming a trustworthy Game Master is not easy, they have to obey a lot of rules which are not as simple as they may appear. Still ... the leader alone is no sufficient staff. Help from developers had to be requested sometimes, already.

How can this situation be improved?
