Title: Boaal's Art Thread.
Post by: dying_inside on March 20, 2006, 09:00:46 pm
Ok, I went into a drawing frenzy about a fortnight ago.  Used up a bunch of paper and then went out and got myself some new pencils and a sketch pad just for sketching and the like. One of the sketchpads (the one I’m chugging away through now) was small and so some of the images might be a little strange background wise (black and stuff).
Well in any case there are going to be a lot of images. So take a look, it will kill you some time if your bored right?  And you just know you wanna….

Well, I can see by your work that you have somewhat of a knack for drawing, but to me its about quality moreso than quantity. I have a feeling that you were whipping these out in about an hour or less so here is my suggestion. As Karyuu will likely tell you if she comes across this thread, its not a bad idea to study up on anatomy. I am going to tell you, try to spend a bit more time on a drawing and really take shading and detaial to a new level. Dont be afraid to lay the graphite or ink on thick, this leaves nice contrast.

If long drawn out detailed art isnt your thing, then I have another suggestion. I know that these are sketches but your technique for sketching isn\'t really there. Study up on some lose pen and ink sketches and look at the techniques they use for adding nice shading, bold lines, and detail, at a quick pace. For instance shading with lines, like crosshatching is a good way to add quick shading to a pen or pencil sketch.

You\'ve got the talent, for the vision, I just think you need to refine your technique a bit as we amateurs all do. Beleive me I have alot to work on too, it just takes some patience and personal initiative. So instead of going on a drawing frenzy and whipping out piece after piece, try going on a frenzy and doing one masterpiece.

Also try cropping and sizing down your pictures after youve photographed them - faster loading times and a more proffesional look.

Gentar :D \\o/

dying_inside, definitely resize these babies! ;) Images exceeding 3000 pixels in any dimension are only good if you are trying to show off an insane level of detail. For sketches, keep them below 1000 pixels in width or height. I would recommend below 800, even. A really large image size requires the viewer to scroll all around and try to piece the pieces together instead of being immediately presented with the entire drawing. You can also cut off the bits your scanner catches that fall outside the image, or your sketchbook - the GIMP is a good free program, similar in many ways to Photoshop, that will allow you to do these simple manipulations that really enhance your presentation. This is most important right now.

There are some really cool concepts floating around in your images, but I think they have to be polished more - anatomy, as Gentar mentioned, and I think right now just clean smooth lines. Just because something is a sketch doesn\'t mean that it has to look sketchy ;) Once you have established your basic subject, erase extra lines and clean up the paper.

Consider giving your figures not just shape, but bulk. Not everything is composed of purely straight lines, or pure curves. Sometimes shapes blend and merge into each other, to create a sense of fullness. This will be more apparent once you poke at anatomy some.

I would suggest that right now you leave shading out entirely and just concentrate on line and shape. Once you understand how figures are composed, what geometric shapes they are made up of, you can concentrate on giving them visible volume through tone.

cheers for fixing the links, Dragonfire999

About the Four fingers and such:
Yeah, I think that had somthing to do with the manga obsessive drawings I had ages ago. I had a haaard time getting manga hands to look anything like manga hands guess that kinda rubbed off. I probably just cut corners and its stuck with me... ( that gonna get me a slap on the wrist from Karyuu... eek.) I was young forgive meee! >.<
Other than that I drew some poorly done \"humans\" (using the term lightly) and decided not to throw them in but I think a couple of them had five fingers in total :P

Ooops. Yeah I will try and set the resize on Imageshack in future.
Aaaand yeah. Alot of these were very very quick conceptual idea\'s that I scratched out and worked on for a little while.
And bulk? could you give me like a refrence to what you mean? Otherwise I havnt really got that much of an idea to tell you the truth.  Other than that I\'ll try work on my technique.  Thanks for the feedbakc and such.

I was thinking about posting references for \"bulk,\" but wasn\'t sure. Not too many people like thread-hijacking with other images, but I\'ll just post links to a couple of sketches :)

This (http://img47.imageshack.us/img47/5986/lunch9gd.jpg) was made when I didn\'t concentrate at all on muscles and bulk, so the feeling of the body is very flat - it looks fairly three-dimensional, but there is barely any hint at muscle.

This (http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/9003/thinge3va.jpg) was made recently and shows more of the shape beneath the creature\'s skin. You can basically feel that the animal is heavy and massive, because it looks like the structure has weight to it. The first image, on the other hand, doesn\'t give as strong a feeling of realism.

Ultimately it relies on a bit of knowledge of anatomy - since once you are comfortable with knowing the way muscles look and interact with each other, you can pretty much \"make up\" creatures that look like they could exist.

Not sure if I did a better job of explaining there ^^

Read through this thread and learned something in the process:)

Thank you Gentar and Karyuu.

Not to Hijack this thread, but why didn\'t you post these sort of critics in  My  (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=22685&boardid=22&styleid=3&sid=d265b99b8e5461590e6b4760511ef360) thread. Would\'ve been really helpful:) I still know i have alot to work on shadows and such.

I really like the two that Zanzibar pulled out, those are very nice, better creatures than i can draw. Naturally, I am not the best artist either :P but Karyuu and Gentar give good advice. I think you should take one of your favorite ones of those sketches and redraw it, enhance upon it, clean it up and shade it nicely, adding more detail to it and such. And remember, when doing a piece with shading, the shading can completely change the picture, for good or bad. So make sure you pay attention to it.

@ Farren Cutter
Those were more based on the pespective than anything else. I had a hard time drawing that  even with a good refrence picture infront of me, but I eventually got the knack and ended up with a pleasing result.
I think four legged creatures look great from that point of view.

Anyway, I did what I kinda thought Karyuu was talking about with bulk, and it doesnt have so many lines.
Criticism and help much appreciated.

Try drawing real creatures purely from reference before you go and make your own, because like Karyuu said, you have to understand anatomy before you can make your own creature. That demon looks bulky, but obviously fake, because it has no definate form or skeletal structure.

Keep working at it. Post your progress :D

Aha, so I have been drawing and looking at pictures for referance and other thing on how to draw limbs and such. I been sketching alot and I eventually thought I should draw something real. I was focusing on the idea of bulk and structure and I came up with this. :

Ok, so I was a  little bored today and decided to model a crossbow. Its 123 polygons and so nothing special, only about 30 mins of work (give or take  30 for fiddleing and messing around with it after). However, I made it all from one thing but looking back I\'m unsure weather I should have made it from the one cube or taken another cube to do the the ctually bow piece.
Advise me on this one. I only actually just thought about this but all the same.

Editing a post brings the thread back to the first page just like making a new post would :} So if you edit, the thread will show up as new and unread too.

You have some neat designs there. Continue looking at anatomy and familiarizing yourself with how the body works - build from the skeleton outwards to make sure that things are in proportion, so that arms won't be the length of entire legs, let's say. Try isolating an area sometimes like just a hand or a shoulder and draw it until you understand how it looks and how it works :} This will help you with muscle mass too.

If you are going to use outlines, try making those outlines clean - so no stray lines or scribbles. And if you are going to use shading, try not to fill in a space without figuring out where the light comes from, first. This is make your object look more realistic, and consistant, too.

Doing well though :]

Wahay, I have exams...  :woot: ???  :( >:(

anyway, as its half term and I have about 5 days till my next exam I thought i would shove a few things into my collection so you can all drool....
weather you drool out of amazement, shock, or just becuase you have a disability (No offence meant to those who do have) is up to you....

without further delay:

http://img269.imageshack.us/my.php?image=grimor6gx.jpg

I made this from a concept sketch of a monster. I call it a Grimor. I did start a texture for it, but as  a first time texturer I found it horribly confusing and generally came to the conclusion that I should probably try simpler things first.
The Grimor is like a living non solid dark entity. it is black and grey and white, that run around its body in diffrent shades. the one in the model seems to have picked somthing up on its way around, or it could be a symbol of its master and creator. I'm not entirly sure of this yet.

http://img279.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lokiiaxeslq8ce.jpg

Next up, Lokii. I gave Lokii a little makeover since the last time I tried to draw the poor Kran, and I used the render in the planeshift website to get a good idea of what a Kran woukld look like if it didnt have any polygon restrictions put on it :). Proved incredibally helpfull. I dunno if you can see them but I put his name into the axe handles. I used a bit of photoshop to create a dark tone. After all, Lokii is pretty much the colour of coal or black rock of some kind....

Edit: Sacrilidge! I didnt put double "I" into the axe handels. How very silly of me!

In anycase, I will celebrate by posting up this drawing.
Hope you enjoy it. Been sketching and working on my figures and anatomy and I hope it shows especially with the balance and sizing of the character.

What is it?

You're doing good, just remember the proportions of limbs and stuff, the legs look shorter then the arms and the head looks bigger then it's chest. I'll give you a link to a tutorials and you can train on proportions, remember, decide the structure and proportions before you start drawing the finishing shapes

The guide uses the "block" idea of seperating everything into blocks(arms, legs etc, etc...) so that you can easily decide how it will look before you add the lines

yeah, I use the block method. I kinda just get a rough estimate. The thing is,  it starts off proportionate but when I  bulk it out, it gets  wierd and things start to look disproportionate. Which I am working on alot. I'm getting better all the time, but I still need to figure out how to solve this magical Appearnbace of growth on the limbs :p
Maybe i need to start disporotionatly...

Hmm, have you tried drawing multiple models of the same posture? No lines added just the blocks to train on and get the best feel. Then, maybe, you begin on the lines.

I dunno I kinda do the tutorial showed there and  then I kinda cross it over with the linestyle for the limbs. Its kinda wierd.

There is one visciose flaw with that tutorial... The hands. I tried drawing thenm from a circle... No thanks matey hehe. Anyway, since when were palms circular? Mine are sqaure :)

Never spaced the boxes out before, seems to help a little.
After drawing somthing out pretty much like the tutorial said I dont like the results. I dont know why, but ...  No.  However i'll probably incorperate parts of it into my work.

Boaal concept 20/7/06

I was wondering at a couple of Looks for Boaal. This was one I came up with. The thing is, aside from his Black skin and such i'm unsure if  I know what his armor looks like, if he wears any at all.

Does a Kran wear clothes?
Who knows..
They dont have anything to hide I suppose....

Very good, I really like the head. What I think is you need to shorten the legs, otherwise i'm really satisfied with what you have done to the picture, some shades here and there and some more details and voila, keep on grinding to the board

Title: Returned from distant lands
Post by: dying_inside on February 08, 2007, 01:43:45 pm
OK so I've been away for a long time.  In that time I was busy drawing like a nut case and doing my thing etc.
I eventually went back to the TGE and  started making my own textures for the World editor. I am a complete and utter nooob with it to be honest, but i gotta start somehwere right? So I started at the simplest possible place.

I just started playing aorund with photoshop and then importing the textures  into the right folder. A few minutes of messing aorund with the terraform editor and the texture editor and from there its just a test them to see if they have any seams. Scrap the ones which do, keep the ones which dont. About 30 % got through... And there where alot of scrapped textures...

Here is the result.

(arg Deviantart wont let me link it image properly. Imageshack it is. )

(http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/8974/landscape94db.th.png) (http://img442.imageshack.us/my.php?image=landscape94db.png)

(http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/4965/landscape61dc.th.png) (http://img120.imageshack.us/my.php?image=landscape61dc.png)

(http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/3904/landscape48dd.th.png) (http://img444.imageshack.us/my.php?image=landscape48dd.png)

(http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/1118/landscape13hj.th.png) (http://img256.imageshack.us/my.php?image=landscape13hj.png)

note: The bump texture isnt mine, its just the regular defualt one.

Edit: I used the snow.
So I went out and took some pics for Texture purposes. Apparantly Torque just did away with any detail what so ever so the snow came out s a hazey whiteness with the occasional blotch of blue or grey...

(http://img250.imageshack.us/img250/7482/winterwonderlandxr5.th.png) (http://img250.imageshack.us/my.php?image=winterwonderlandxr5.png)

(http://img295.imageshack.us/img295/2811/snowylandfx5.th.png) (http://img295.imageshack.us/my.php?image=snowylandfx5.png)

Looks like I'll have to use the demo's textures to referance my own....

Yeah, it never looks that bright in Photoshop so its kinda hard to judge sometims...

But I neeed to make my textures darker for sure.

Nah, they are fine, maybe slightly oversaturated, but not really that much. Its is the light. I mean, when you go on grassy field and the sun is shining bright, you would see more or less this. But if the sun is behind some clouds, then everything becomes much more grey. What should change, is the saturation and depending from the light.
I'm not really sure if it is possible just by applying different light, but it is exactly this what may be wrong with these landscapes ;)

And colorfull oversized pixels of magenta and brown don't looks really good on snow. In fact they don't look good at all, even without snow ;P

But i know how hard it is to make texture for flat surface, which is supposed to imitate 3D grass...

Title: Simple models and texturing
Post by: dying_inside on February 10, 2007, 11:49:43 pm
OK so I made some really quick sple models.
A crate and a rock.

And I'll upload the Rock screenshot later. Right now Image shack has the reliability of a nonce in a playground.

Title: The effects of boredom
Post by: dying_inside on February 22, 2007, 11:24:02 pm
Oh cry for me Planeshift, I was bored I tell you! And unto openGL I bore havoc.
I created a sword, its simple and easy and I was not in the mood for  spending alot of time moddeling right then.
There was no mapping to this invoved. it was a case of Unwrapping and moving the mesh into sections. I then proceeded to grab a bunch of discaarded random images and test textures for tiling onto landscapes, not models, and diffused.
Alot.

The result was interesting. There are a bunch of renders that I didnt bother uploading cause they wernt too good.

Thats just strange

Next time I'll actually map it out and play around with some stuff in photoshop.

Edit: I went back and actually textured the sword properly.

Edit 2:  Somthing a little more interesting. I'll upload the drawings of it later on. I call this race "snus".
And I'm going to HATE texturing this thing.

Its 1947 Polgons.

Edit 2: A few more models I made. A hand axe and a double headed war axe.

Edit 3:

Garris's Axe

Untextured and not fully completed yet, I'm going to  start working on those extensive and unnescissary faces  some time in the future so I can texture it with minimum hassel.

Edit 4 : Narure's Pitchfork

Modeled from  an drawing in Garris' weapon thread: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/50529347/ (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/50529347/)

http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/50529347/ (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/50529347/)

Its about 400 polygons.

Ok but it will take a bit of time methinks. mainly because it unfolded  extremely strange. Well the Y sides of the handle and shaft.
I mean strange!

Hell I'm kinda not even sure if i can texture  it because  of that unwrapping.

Edit: based on the layout of the map and such I'm going to scrap the original model and redo it in the hopes that it will  make a better UV unwrap. hat map was unworkable.
Sorry man.

very true. The original model would've been EXTREMELY hard to texture, could take days....

So I have decided that my whole 3D model folder  (on this computer anyway) needed a look over and a finish.
Thats because only a few of them have actually been textured. SO I think that before I Model anything else I;m going to texture my whole folder and then let loose again.
This could take some time so:
Garris, your axe is on the waiting list sorry.
Same goes the Poleaxe thing requested by Narure and Soripe. Mean drawing by the way Garris.

In the mean time I have made progress.

I textured a bow. There where some slight mapping mishaps along the way but with a little quick thinking everything came out fine.

Enjoy.

Edit/update:  So I'm continueing with the texture everything in my folder before I do anything else theme, and I finnally got around to texturing the greatsword/ two-handed sword I made.

Maan I need to  get alot of my stuff  put into .dts format...

Edit2: STOP! Hammer time!
