IRC has developed its own sort tone and culture and a lot of people simply don't like it. If chatter is contained to a certain thread (or forum, ie Hydlaa Plaza), is it such an evil thing?
As evil as dropping opinion bombs then locking the thread?
-
Welcome back.
We still have forum rules about useless chatter and "no-topic" threads. If people don't like the official #ps room, they can create another, on another server if need be. They can go to another forum that doesn't restrict them as so and continue the chats over there. But a lot of us like this place clean and full of actual content.
-
Yeah, about that Kary...don't hit me and Nash for going off topic for about a page...he set me up! X-/
-
As long as you don't continue for 5 more pages :P
-
I guess I missed what the fuss is about.
-
A lot of new forum members causing a lot of spam (and dragging me in) joined ever since the server was shut down for updates. It's not my fault. :P

Heh, I'm not new actually, I've been around since MB XD
But yeah, we just got a bit out of control. Usually I'm good about this stuff but on occasion I let myself get carried away...I have seen tons of new members since the updating fiasco, people really don't know how to handle their impatience.

Not just that really. If it was that in itself, it wouldn't be so bad, but it seems people have decided the search button is too much hassel, so they just make new threads asking the same answered questions over and over again, thus cuasing threads to get abnormally large and/or locked/deleted, and driving DaveG to the point of insanity.
So, the normal stuff. And welcome back, enjoy your break?

Welcome back Zanzibar.

I never even got a chance to spam. I was doing a very unusual thing, and reading the ENTIRE 21 page threed (which took about 2 1/2 hours btw), and by the time I got to end, and was fully informed and ready to post... I found it locked. :@#\ (at least I found out what the padlock symbol means ;D ).
Anyway, I'be lurking for a long time, and only recently decided it was worth the effort to make an account. I try my best to adhear to good forum practices, and search/read before posting, so hopefully I won't be "new" to the forums for too long.
-
In those cases, send a PM to Karyuu explaining what you wanted to say, and if she thinks its worth unlocking a thread for you to post it, it will be done. It helps if you offer her cookies too.
And welcome, don't worry too much, you sound like you'll fit in just fine.
-
Thanks necko,
I've been around for quite a while, but haven't been active for almost 4 months, since I was pretty deep in study. I remember I had a text document open with 5 or 6 quotes in it that I wanted to address, but it's gone now. Probobly wouldn't have been that informative anyway. ;)

IRC has developed its own sort tone and culture
Actually, shal, since Moogie and grono disappeared thats a lot less true.
-
:-[ I am a cause for disorder, of the :offtopic: nature. X-/
Well, in my own defense, there are not as many PS topics as usual since planeshift is down, and alot of members very easily go a slight tangent, which allows for others to just be friendly and joke alittle more, which unfortunatly leads to a long spurt of offtopic COUGH me and suno COUGH. this is a, for the most part, temporary problem that will be fixed when its back up. But dont forget, in terms of just impatient new members...its always goign to be like this.

I sit at home and touch...
Well lets keep to the topic. I don't use IRC anymore since I spend too much time in all the rooms. As well once I get on old friends from old servers find me and then I spend all my time online with them instead of being productive. I used to play any IRC RPG, it was awsome! But I now keep out until I can justify 10+ hours a day for it (not for at least 3 years).
Oh and yeah most people are impatient, it comes from a society that can google any product they want and buy it with money they don't have, delievered to their door the next day!
-
Heh, topics come and go in IRC and if you want a serious conversation, you will most likely get it.
Of course, there are many people who will not like it, but, can't keep everybody happy.
And if you can't keep everybody happy, atleast keep Cadoras happy :D
-
But Cadoras is a Menki PUNK!!!! Well my char thinks so.
Maybe I will be able to give it a shot in 6 months if I am able to secure this job and get the new house under market value.
-
I've been called many things but NEVER a PUNK!
:'(
It means so much...Thanks Andrek!!

I disagree. IRC is pretty predictable, so I think it's safe to say it has a certain tone.
On a side note... I didn't really leave, and I'm not really back.
-
I go as often as I can on the IRC, but often, when I am on there is no one ... cause I need to go either in the morning or in the very late evening to catch the US peak hours ... so that's why I prefer the forum, because not everyone needs to be on at the same time to hear what other people have to say

AMEN!!!!!!!! This is why I like boards :innocent:

I think we can safely say i live in #ps
Anyway, what i say is true :p (about the whole culture thing.)

A nice no welcome back to Zanzibar *waves* (j/k ^^)
Then I guess it's just certain individuals who I find to be predictable.
I find myself pretty much unpredictable in certain matters, don't know what you think..
Edit: I totally forgot to add content in that post.. . o O (that never happened before to me! >:-/)
Content:
I find it little bit too harsh how some mods lock and delete posts.. And that although those are the official forums where everyone (should) come to.
I vote for one or two more subsections for the General Discussions forum to get it more organised as posts won't sink so fast to the bottom, making it more easy to
review other posts in a certain area of interest -> get the forum more organised without deleting and locking posts with the "was already posted" reason.
And 2nd Edit:
People shouldn't be forced to other forums or IRC just because they talk about whatever they want.. I think a nudge to the topic from time to time is really sufficient :)
-
Most old timers to IRC(pre 2000,) lost faith in the IRC service when people started useing the service for idleing and degrading decent folk for no apperant reason.
The state of most IRC channels and the ethics they go by currently is demeaning to the original concept. Once upon a time it was known for quality communications. Now the regulers as they would like to be known as, just degrade people and waste computing power idleing.
In any case, like was originally said, you're free to create your own channel. Until it to becomes garbage do to parasites, and then you can create another one, and so on.
-
*Zorbels looks at the post above* Wow, it sucks you have that opinion. I guess everyone is entitled to one. I will say this though because I did take offence a bit to your tone in the post and the way you worded it. I am a regular and I do not degrade anyone. I most certainly do not effect any quality communications. If someone needs help with the game, then I try and help before continuing on with my conversation previous to the question.
Most people flock to IRC from the game for many reasons.
(1)The "regulars" like to communitcate with each other on a daily basis. While others like to stop and chat every once and awhile. It is like a huge internet family for lack of a better word. We joke around in #planeshift and have a good time. I didn't realise there was an issue with that.
(2) because they need a GM's help. If they are not online, usually at least one is in IRC.
(3) Because they need technical help with the game.
(4) To discuss roleplaying while in game, it is a form of good communication in case if anyone has an issue with the way the story is going.
(5) To get information on the server if it is down and no posts are made on the forums
(6) To get to know the people behind the scenes with the game. The Dev's. We are all curious as to their ideas, who they are, why do they do this project.
Thing is there is little to no information about the mIRC #planeshift channel. What is it supposed to be for? I thought it was for the reasons stated above. I didn't realise there were restrictions and rules to follow. If there are maybe someone could post a sticky or make it a little clearer? Down below is the information I found on the forums. It doesn't really say much and it supports what I have been saying all along. If there is a reason that mIRC #planeshift channel exsists and it isn't for what I stated above, please someone explain to me what it is for ......

Ok folks, forums are not intended to be a real-time method of communication. Stop spamming here, and if you want to chatter randomly all over the place goto IRC. Our main room is #planeshift on FreeNode

I hate to say it but I have to agree with Zanzibar on this one. I am definitely not a frequent visitor there, but today I had a slight problem in-game and as there were no GM's online I went to the IRC room to see if I could speak with one about it. I asked a question and was immediately ridiculed. I'm sure it was meant as a joke but as I was going there for some help I did not appreciate it. I can't speak for the tone of the room changing, but I can definitely say that for a newcomer it would not seem very friendly to be mocked for asking a serious question. I can only wonder what happens to others....
-
Most people in need of help get caught by a GM checking out the room, or maybe by hoki :p

Suggesting that I wasn't talking about you. gg.

It's pretty much just DaveG. He'll step into a thread, drop opinion bombs and insults, then he'll lock the thread so no one can respond to his crap. Karyuu and others just work to keep this place clean.

The reason i don't use #ps on irc is because i use quakenet and the #ps i found there kinda sucks.I have joined the offical #ps site a few times but the hassle involved switching from one to the other is too much to endure to be active on it.
Quakenet ftw tbh.

Thats harsh... Personnally, I would never do that. I understand what its like to be new to a game and to want to get some answers to my questions. The other day I gave a player 300 trias because he was new to the game, and he wanted to buy himself a weapon. I also wanted to spare him some of what I went through when I first played the game (5 days before the update). There are a lot of helpful people out there, always willing to share their knowledge or wealth. Unfortunately, not everyone is. Some people seem to be made for annoying others, and simply being a nuisance. I say this a lot, and I will say it again: there will always be rulebreakers, and no matter what we do, we simply cannot get rid of them all. All we can do is try and cope with it, and of course get rid of those we find.

Denerynn, ingame != irc.

ever thought of connecting to more than one server at a time? i can already here the screams of "heresy!" -.-

:) Just one little correction .... Bodacher is not new to the game. He has been around awhile.
@Bodacher: I agree that sometimes people in IRC seem to forget what the channel is about and get a little carried away.. I myself don't like it at times when I see others being rude to another. This isn't something that happens all the time though. As you said you don't frequent IRC lots, so you don't see the good and polite people helping out.
@everyone: It isn't as bad as others in this thread have made it out to be. It is a useful tool with a couple of bad apples. Thats life. Try to also keep in mind that there is huge age differences and that will have alot to do with the conversation at hand in IRC.
-
Btw, one of the reasons that devs/gms love irc is you can be on irc most of the time you are at a computer, but you can't always be in game. So we could be at working on something else(coding for example) or not even at home(trying to scrap together an income :P) and still be on irc. Of course, on irc doesn't mean truely there... but you can be there in spirit atleast :)
-
@everyone: It isn't as bad as others in this thread have made it out to be. It is a useful tool with a couple of bad apples.
True for the most part.
And the function served by the IRC is critically needed.
But personal insults thrown at people in IRC are more severe than the PS forums, and it gets bad pretty often.
I am generally too old to be shocked by nasty children, but I was speechless one night, when someone posted a link to a 'how to have sex with your dog' tutorial.
Because as far as I know, the person who posted the link suffered no consequence to his action.
-
Let me put it this way: About half the devs don't bother to login to #planeshift and the other half tend to ignore it. After this release I had to turn off my IRC client's "aggressive notify" option because of idiots poking me relentlessly there. If you want to talk about the code or building, goto #planeshift-build instead. There's also a private devs room which we use, and is why we bother to login at all.
About idiocies in #planeshift: Yeah, it gets... odd in there sometimes. Most of the time it's fine, but it can get spammy real quick. The people who actually care don't go in there that much, so Jose is left to wrangle them most of the time. Bans do happen, but yeah, junk remains.
-
Because as far as I know, the person who posted the link suffered no consequence to his action.
This is why I have an account on the forums marked with a nice "IRC op" badge. Please send me the details and logs of the incident.

Yup. IRC is poorly moderated, and people use it to flame and troll quite often.

jose knows why that is ;P

People already scream bloody murder at moderators "limiting free speech" on the forums :P I can't imagine what reactions Jose may get if he tries to toughen up, though he should ;P

My thoughts were the same. You would think having a place to have all the free speech you want ... seeing as the forums are limited ..... people would be happy. Ha! wasn't I kidding myself. Another thing I had to ask myself is why doesn't anyone ever mention the good? If IRC was that bad I don't think people would use the room. So there are flaws, and the system isn't perfect. I would also hope people would be forgiving and understand Jose does have to sleep at one point. He can't be there 24/7. So the question is, if you feel IRC is to much, then what are you going to contribute to make it better besides the obvious complaints?
-

I don't have free speech... sooo many things i would love to post/say but don't.

Well that is just common sense. After all there are going to be under age people in the room as planeshift is for all ages. Still it is alot less limited then the forums. So I guess you can't talk about sex, or swear your face off, but really those aren't topics that go with ps anyway. So technically when it comes to talking about the game, you do have free speech.
-
So the question is, if you feel IRC is to much, then what are you going to contribute to make it better besides the obvious complaints?
I would say the answer to that, Zorbels, is to be a good example, and provide strong leadership to others.
I am pleased to add, that you are getting rather good at both. :)
Hugs, dear.

i'm still one of the youngest there.

Nonsense. (http://qdb.ps-mc.com/?599)
But seriously, from what I hear, most "incidents" occur during the few hours I sleep. The problem is, I'm not online then to moderate and I don't know/know of anyone that can moderate the channel during those times. Usually if a conversation looks like it might go downhill fast, I op someone else before I leave.
People never mention the good stuff, it's always hours of discussion about crashes (http://www.travisnelsa.com/planeshift/crash.swf) ;]

I'm all for free speech, but when people start ganging up on a single individual in attempt to make them suffer, then they've crossed a line and they need to be shut down.

I've seen crap happen under your watch. You stop it most of the time, but there have been times where you've let stuff fly when I thought you should have done something to stop it.

Agreed. This used to happen all the time on the forums back when sep & co. were around and was only encouraged by Mogura...it was pretty pitiful. I don't know the state of IRC at the moment (I haven't visited since the first channel really, when there was about 10 people at its peak), but hopefully the type of thing you're describing doesn't happen too often or it really is bad.
