Title: Heaviest metal band you listen to?
Post by: zanzibar on September 24, 2006, 08:12:35 am
The heaviest band I listen to would probably be Melvins, but it's a different kind of heavy.  It's loaded, slow, thick, sludgey.  The angry kind of kill-kill-kill heavy would probably lead me to agoraphobic nosebleed.  Even though pig destroyer is the same guy only with a full band compliment, nosebleed's stuff just seems more raw and aggressive.  I've listened to a lot of black metal a la Emperor, but it just doesn't evoke the same of emotion from me.

Add names to the list.  I'll definately check out any bands I haven't already been exposed to.

Out of my personal experience I would say Vader, even though I am pretty sure that it aint the "Heaviest Metal Band" in existence, I simply didn't listen to many Black/Death Bands, yet.

Vader - Warlords (http://www.massive-music.pl/multimedia/vader-warlords.mp3)

That's not bad.  I just had to turn it up to get the full effect.:)

For what it's worth, the heaviest band I listen to is probably Every Time I Die.  Mostly because the lead singer is an extremely cool person (he taught English before the band).

...obviously, I'm not really into the "heavy" thing..more into "fast" music.

Can I recomend an album to you Kiern?  "It's me, god" by Breach.  It might be hard to find, but you might like it if you're into every time I die.

edit:  I was actually able to find part of one of their songs being hosted somewhere.  link (http://www.burningheart.com/_lib/util/stream.php?p=/29/134/1199.mp3&f=Breach-Bloodlines.mp3")

"Heaviest" bands I listen to are probably Nile, Decapitated, Deicide, Usipian and the like. In Battle too, for the craziest double bass drumming ever. Brutal death metal ftw!

PS: Hardcore just plain sucks.

Hmmm... I don't like heavy metal, or "heavy music" generally, but there is one exception - Rammstein. They have their own unique sound, probably thanks to their vocalist. Formally they play industrial rock (?), nevertheless for me it is heavy metal - their music is the heaviest one I ever listened to of my own free will.

If you like Rammstein and industrial hardcore music you might want to check out Violent Work of Art if you don't already know them.  If you go to http://violentworkofart.com/php/modules.php?name=Downloads , it will ask you to register an account, then you can revisit the link and download some of their stuff.

These links will work even if you don't have an account:

Dalai Lama ftw
^^ Rammstein.
The song is nice because it's based on a story by Nietzsche.

Ontopic:
I don't really listen much to heavy bands these days.
Heaviest stuff I listen(ed) to must be Papa Roach and System of a Down, though they aren't really metal ;)
I mostly listen to:
Red Hot Chili Peppers
The White Stripes
Muse
Tenacious D (hehe)
Skin (only some)
Good Charlotte
Green Day

But mostly The Red Hot Chili Peppers, they're just good :)

Tool comes to mind. but I'm an old timer.  Just heard some Motorhead on my Pandora account.. QWhat?! You've never heard of Pandora?  DUDE!, free kickbuttocks music, from bands you've heard of, and bands it thinks you'll like. After you thumbs up/down a few songs, it'll know the kinda stuff you like... now its Playing Rush Red Barchetta.. hrm, maybe because I gave a thumbs up to a Zeppelin song about a car.. anyways, I'm in no way associated with these guys, just glad there is now a legal and free way to get music in my dingy basement without a pile of CDs

http://www.pandora.com/

EDIT: just re-read their FAQ,     "At this time we are only licensed to offer Pandora music services to residents of the United States."

Pandora is alright for a little bit, but after a while it's just the same songs over and over.  It's definately worth a look at though, especially if you don't know a whole lot of the smaller bands then it is probably very useful.  I'd recommend making a profile on last.fm because it gives your recs based on what you play.  A lot of 'em.  Very useful.

But really, I'm stuck listening to the same 5 songs over and over so eh.  Polar Bear Club is all I need.

Over & over? I've been listening to my own account for 3 days, roughly 4 hours a day, haven't heard an repeats, and only 2 songs from the same album that I can recall, & perfect choices on those too, from Zeppelin Physical Graffitti    nowhere near as repetive as my local radio station.

The heaviest band I listen to is probably From Autumn to Ashes.  They're not really metal.  Supposedly they're "metal core," whatever that means.  Anyway I like them, especially their first full length album, entitled "Too Bad You're Beatiful."  The more recent stuff is a little less heavy but good nonetheless, to my ears.

I really listen to very large variety of music.  It all really depends on my mood that day.  :P

Mostly I listen to stuff like Fokofpolisiekar, Rammstein, Ill Nino, Trivium, Disturbed, System of a Down or even Wednesday 13 (Also I loved the Roadrunner United CD).   :D

Other times I am simply in the mood for something different and I listen to Nightwish, Unwritten Law, Yellow Card, Animal Collective, Placebo ooh and don’t forget Flogging Molly! \\o//

Actually, if you want to get technical, none of it is metal. Apart from perhaps Cradle of Filth, and some Metallica (even though I hate the band), but I wouldn't argue for or against them being metal either way. ::)

Cradle is Black metal so they definately are metal, from Dani Filth's own mouth when I met him after a gig "We just wanna play some f***ing hard metal tunes"

Also adding Obituary, Opeth, Nazareth and As Your C*** Slowly Bleeds to the mix, some bands I been listening to recently.

COF is hardly black metal.. They are far too flashy and melodic to be black.. For a black metal example or three, I'd name Immortal, Darkthrone (the old stuff) and Kampfar (a bit more viking'ish than the two others though).

Some call their genre "extreme gothic metal", and I tend to agree, even though the gothic part is a bit off imo. I like to compare them with Dimmu Borgir, even though I hold Dimmu in higher regard than COF.

No it isn't.

Black metal is "simple", noisy, gritty and most of them tend to focus on live performances (some don't perform live though). The "true" stuff, as us metal heads like to call it, is often underground and often has bad production. Most black metal of old started out that way, most new true black metal does too. The bad production is  part of the reason why it is defined as "simple", noisy and gritty. For a perfect example of this, try finding some of the free media the band called Svartpest has lying around.

I don't see a reason in comparing symphonic extreme metal to technical post thrash though... The old Emperor was black metal, it followed the above "formula", the "new" stuff isn't. Far from it, in my oppinion.

Ok Xalthar, I think everyone gets that you know more about metal then them...can we move on?  Because I don't think anyone really cares as much as you seem to think they do.  Arguments over genres are as annoying as arguments over alignments.

As for the band you recommended zanzibar the vocals kind of get on my nerves, which is usually my problem with metal I like the music but hate the vocals...they do sound like they'd be a much better band to see live, however.

Actually I don't care if they, or you care. They respond, they get an answer. Simple as that. If you have a problem with that, bring it up with the moderators.

I was recommending bands in between the arguments, so if you dislike black metal for any reason, just ignore my recommendations. I'd be happy to recommend something else should you have any other likings in the huge world o' metal.

As a closing remark, lets just say I have a soft spot for metal, and don't like to see it mixed up with something that's obviously not of high enough quality to be considered metal.

I am a huge metal fan, I play guitar and sing professionally in a metal band, it is what I do. Dani and the rest of Cradle define themselves as "black metal" now who are you to say they arent if that is what the band say they are? Secondly "true" black metal is supposed to be very dark and very theatrical, not gritty etc, I think you are thinking of doom/doomcore/blackened doom metal ie Raging Speedhorn blah blah blah.  And also, you DON'T know more about metal than everyone else, in fact if you did you wouldn't be so elitist with your bulls*it comments, you may have a 'soft spot for metal.' Good for you, metal is my life my career and my state of being, don't try forcing your ridiculous ideas upon other people. I thankyou

You can't define a genre by production values.  Because most black metal is underground, it tends to be recorded cheeply.  But being recorded cheeply does not make a band black metal!

And black metal is NOT simple.  Not in the slightest.  And it's much more refined than noisey genres like noisepunk or screamo.

Strictly musically speaking, most black metal is of a very simple formula, and this isn't meant in any derogatory way, I should have worded it differently in the previous reply.
The new Emperor, Dimmu Borgir, and Cradle of Filth is not black metal. It might be somewhat extreme, but it just isn't black.
Black has a special sound to it that is somewhat hard to define. It doesn't come from poor production, no. But the primeval, dark and brutal sound of true black metal is "simple", in a natural way. Bands like Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth have certain symphonic elements to their music that is pretty far from black metal and some parts are rather complex. Other black metal bands of old, like Darkthrone, Satyricon (to some extent), Carpathian Forest, are in contrast to the above mentioned symphonic extreme bands, drifting towards "punk", which is a pretty much non complex genre too, and away from metal as a whole. A sad development really, but I guess the brutally satanic, malechauvenist, axelopping vikings are a thing of the past :p

Heh, sorry Xalthar - but unless you want to label the latest Empreror/Cradle/whatever album with something ridiculous like "Symphonic/Depressing Dark Funeral Metal" (yes, I read this in a review and had a good laugh :D), the major genre above it all is still "black metal". This is not my opinion, but pretty much the opinion of every fan-zine out there. There's no doubt that their stuff is more "family-compatible" in a way compared to, say, Gorgoroth, but the lyrics, the drums, the speed after all is still black metal. The melodic element is just a variety, as is the lack of an e-bass or a second drum set with other bands.

Any band you can put a clear label on will get boring after the second album. A lot of bands (and this isn't exclusively true for the metal/rock scene) produce albums that are comprised of a number of songs from different genres or subgenres. Try to grab "Moonlyght - Progressive Darkness" if you can, and put a clear label on a single song. You can't. There's many great musicians out there that manage the spilts between genres and subgenres. If I asked you something like "What style does Emperor play?", unless you want to write an essay, what would be your reply? ;)

@zanzi
Yeah you "own" the thread, but you don't own the forums... :innocent:

I still don't subscribe to the idea that production values determine genre.  To me, it's about the music itself.  I think I understand why you disagree though.

@Uyaem: I never said I own the forums, silly.  Are you saying I act like I do?  Feel free to send me links to examples of such behaviour in a private message.

Dethklok....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C4FqTfFma8
second episode-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNmu__4edW8
For anyone having not seen it on the tele.
Funny comedy with some decent metal sound I have to admit, least music wise.
Plus all the other episodes there.

i used to listen to System of a Down alot, and i mean really a lot, like 7x12hours a week. but with their latest album (which is great) i started looking for something more heavy, aggressiv in sound (SOAD lyrics are still very aggressiv). and so i ended up with Slipknot. the massive wall of sounds & drums just gets me the kick in the morning i need to spend my day at work, fixing stupid server problems and deal with annoying (java)developers.

i "tried" other bands like Slayer or Korn, but they are just too boring to listen too. Don't get me wrong, the instrumental parts are great, but the lead singer's voices in both bands are always the same, no variation what so ever.

as with Slipknot, you get the whole package: lots of different music/voice styles, massive drums and guitars, wooha rock&roll ;) so now its Slipknot im listing to 7x12hours a week, sometimes varying with "Stone Sour", the side project of two Slipknot members (which is not a bit as "heavy" as SK but still kinda rocking).

I love all of those bands you just mentioned. I was going to reccommend Stone Sour to you, but then I saw the end part of your post :D

I used to love slipknot, though not quite as much now.

Enter Shikari. I love that band.

yeah the first stone sour album didn't kick as much as i hoped, but the second one is pure love ;)

btw, to any swiss citizens here (are there any, btw?), stone sour will play the 1st of november in zurich's rohstofflager. it's certainly something you do not want to miss if you like stone sour (and live in switzerland, of course ;)) or good rock music in general.
