Title: New forum Feature: Karma
Post by: neko kyouran on October 05, 2006, 07:32:30 am
Its on the left there, underneath all our names whenever we post.  Is it just me, or is that new?

+1 from me to miss K, just becuase I can.

Oh, and here's another new feature:

"An Error Has Occurred!
The last posting from your IP was less than 60 seconds ago. Please try again later."

You get that page if you try to post too fast.  Best part is, after you get that page, you lose whatever you typed as it kicks you back to the forum section.

The 1 minute wait before posting again is probably good, good against spamming.
Don't know about the karma thingy, do we need it?
There is always the risk of people modding people's karma down because they don't like them, for the fun of it, because the person corrected him, because someone won a discussion from him, etc.

yay for popularity contests.  It's just like high school all over again.

(I didn't like high school.)

Edit, Oh, and it seems you can only add or take away a point per every hour per user.  So it isn't all that bad, but I agree with Thom, is really something we need?

I've been pessimistic about such things since the beginning of always - no clue where it came from right now anyway. But if people can behave with the new toy, that would be quite nice.

Ditto, i don't see of any good coming from it.

If people are helpfull, you'll know pretty soon, if they arn't, you'll find out.

All this karma thing screams is for someone to find a way to mess with it and give someone -10000000 karma.

I don't like the post system either, it promotes spam.

I sincerely feel both should be removed, they add a macho component, increase problems, and just cause stress.

Please feel free to show me the positives of such things.

Haha. I never did that to someone on one of my old forums before. Honest.

I dont mind it. As long as its not abused by lots of people, it may be a nice feature. It will also help newer people find people that can help them, such as Kary who has +6 already :P

The karma thing is a very childish feature.  People visiting the forums for the first time will be given a more negative impression of the PS community and project because of it.

It depends. If everyone has good karma, It wont be a problem :D

But, I see your point.

I frequent another forum that has a built in rating system.  The most popular regulars have at most 3 out of 5 stars.  (I have 2 out of 5).

Why is it that they have such low ratings?  It's because people tend to use the rating system when they're angry more often than when they're pleased.  People only bother with it when they're upset about something or if they're in a bad mood.

There's no doubt in my mind that the exact same situation would happen here.

I am sure this is exactly what is going to happen.  I really cannot see the logic behind it other than for people to play around with it or mess with those they are upset with. If it is suppose to help people somehow I don’t see in which way.  If someone is trying to find someone helpful because they have a problem they can post there problem and they will find those people without having to scan the forums looking for someone with a lot of points.  I doubt anyone will do that anyway.
Who knows... perhaps there is some other reason for it?   Maybe we will find out eventually.

i agree with zanzibar, it is prone to misuse. in worst case the most helpful people will get the worst karma ratings just because others are jealous of them. i first noticed the karma feature in our own forum and my initial thought was, that a developer was thinking of a new feature for his forum software and came out with that. this is not ebay or something where we need the rating from others to be recognised as "valuable". in addition, the karma feature is just too poorly developed. no one sees who voted and why, there is no regulation for it and so one.

Another forum I belong to has a similar option, it is called reputation points. The differance there is that when givin positive or negitive points, you are able to give a short description of your points awarded. Each post can be checked to see if there have been points awarded. Without this feature, I am affraid most here are going to have negative scores, for all the reasons mentioned above.
I for one have never been infavor of such "popularity contests". We all know there are certain clicks around, these clicks can send anyones Karma into the gutter, while giving eachouther undeserved Karma.
This should be interesting.

Here is an idea, If your looking for features, how about adding spell check ?

So it seems obvious that we all hate the idea and we know there will be many problems from systems like this.

So can whoever is in charge of this system, please take it down.

Or at the very least explain why it is overall good than bad?

It seems obvious, not only to me, but to the others posting here that this will only cause problems.

The forum has spell check.  It was enabled when we moved from old forums to new.  It was then turned off, with other handy features too save on server resources.  We started to use too much server cpu time and the owner of the server that the forums run on shut down the forum for a bit.  Still waiting for that feature to come back myself, heres to the future.

Oh, and just for kicks I've been clicking Karyuu's karma rating thingy every time I check the forums.  Simply becuase I can.  This will make the 6th time now.  I wonder how high I can make it go up.

no one sees who voted and why

if that could be implemented that would definately add some sort of organization... it'd only be one step though!

But is it worth the trouble?
I'd rather see this karma system go away.

Look at my Karma for example, I was smited two times before posting this.
Why?

And even if I had 10000 karma I wouldn't care, karma is abusable and is mostly used on emo places like MySpace.
PS isn't MySpace.

Another big argument is indeed that people tend to use rating features more when they are pissed off about something.

hmm, if its not abused i can see it being kinda intersting, mainly for personal (ego :p) reasons though...

looks like people seem to think that they are supposed to give you negative karma if their opinion differs from the posters o.o

that or my karma sucks, which wouldn't be surprising, with the amount of luck I have being sucky too

IMO this karma thing should be reserved only for certain forum members. I saw this type of system on a forum, and there, you could give karma only if your humble self possesed a certain number of karma points. Initially the karma points were awarded by forum moderators or admins. But well... we have a new toy to play with :P
Title: Re: New forum Feature: Karma

It would be better if you could only give positive Karma. Then if someone helps you or something, they get karma, they dont help you, they dont!

Nono, both positive and negative options must be enabled, so you can show your positive, or negative appreciation about a post or thread.

Ok... how about seeing who gave you the Karma.

So I can hunt them down and....yeah. \\o//

Okay, what is the official reason for activating this feature *at all*?

Just look at poor Croconil being at -7, I'll applaud you again ;)

I'm also getting frustrated by the 60 second post limit, I had to make some quick replies to two different thread I was watching this morning and got the "wait 60 secs" message. I didn't have any time so just left. Too bad.
