New forum Feature: Karma

Its on the left there, underneath all our names whenever we post.  Is it just me, or is that new?

I fears it..
Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

+1 from me to miss K, just becuase I can.

Oh, and here's another new feature:

"An Error Has Occurred!
The last posting from your IP was less than 60 seconds ago. Please try again later."

You get that page if you try to post too fast.  Best part is, after you get that page, you lose whatever you typed as it kicks you back to the forum section.

The 1 minute wait before posting again is probably good, good against spamming.
Don't know about the karma thingy, do we need it?
There is always the risk of people modding people's karma down because they don't like them, for the fun of it, because the person corrected him, because someone won a discussion from him, etc.
We're not evil. We're simply amazing.

yay for popularity contests.  It's just like high school all over again.

(I didn't like high school.)

Edit, Oh, and it seems you can only add or take away a point per every hour per user.  So it isn't all that bad, but I agree with Thom, is really something we need?

I've been pessimistic about such things since the beginning of always - no clue where it came from right now anyway. But if people can behave with the new toy, that would be quite nice.

Ditto, i don't see of any good coming from it.

If people are helpfull, you'll know pretty soon, if they arn't, you'll find out.

All this karma thing screams is for someone to find a way to mess with it and give someone -10000000 karma.

I don't like the post system either, it promotes spam.

I sincerely feel both should be removed, they add a macho component, increase problems, and just cause stress.

Please feel free to show me the positives of such things.

Haha. I never did that to someone on one of my old forums before. Honest.

I dont mind it. As long as its not abused by lots of people, it may be a nice feature. It will also help newer people find people that can help them, such as Kary who has +6 already :P

The karma thing is a very childish feature.  People visiting the forums for the first time will be given a more negative impression of the PS community and project because of it.

I frequent another forum that has a built in rating system.  The most popular regulars have at most 3 out of 5 stars.  (I have 2 out of 5).

Why is it that they have such low ratings?  It's because people tend to use the rating system when they're angry more often than when they're pleased.  People only bother with it when they're upset about something or if they're in a bad mood.

There's no doubt in my mind that the exact same situation would happen here.

I am sure this is exactly what is going to happen.  I really cannot see the logic behind it other than for people to play around with it or mess with those they are upset with. If it is suppose to help people somehow I don’t see in which way.  If someone is trying to find someone helpful because they have a problem they can post there problem and they will find those people without having to scan the forums looking for someone with a lot of points.  I doubt anyone will do that anyway.
Who knows... perhaps there is some other reason for it?   Maybe we will find out eventually.

i agree with zanzibar, it is prone to misuse. in worst case the most helpful people will get the worst karma ratings just because others are jealous of them. i first noticed the karma feature in our own forum and my initial thought was, that a developer was thinking of a new feature for his forum software and came out with that. this is not ebay or something where we need the rating from others to be recognised as "valuable". in addition, the karma feature is just too poorly developed. no one sees who voted and why, there is no regulation for it and so one.
