Title: My dilemma
Post by: Kixie on March 06, 2007, 09:33:15 am
It's so frustrating getting a desired object, then not knowing what to do with it..

I just got a debit card this month, and after a few months of a fixed income I have enough money to buy nice things. However, with the introduction of a nice plastic toy I have lost all drive and desire to buy anything. Anyone have any good advice for good online games/websites/forums/etc. that require a credit card?

I imagine the debit card at the beginning was a typo?
Unless it's different in the states.

My advice, save your money, Kixie.  Saving is fun.

Well the two as far as the internet is concerned are interchangable, but I did mean debit card. But, I don't like saving. I don't like it one bit. Saving is what I do every time I get a check, and it makes me feel stupid. Honestly, I'm not even sure why I'm saving. So blowing off some steam with a good game seems like the perfect remedy. I'm THIS *shows thumb and forefinger* close to buying a 'bag of crabs' from Weebl.

Well...

Vanguard looked good.  Don't know if they screwed up but, if you are intent on spending money, that's where I would spend it.

Or get DOD:S or Supreme commander.

In the immortal words of Dale Cooper
Quote
Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee.

Wow, what an odd question.

Don't you have any expensive hobbies you could blow your money on? Or maybe you should save up for a car/apartment/etc.

Or snipe stuff off e-bay. Always fun... until it arrives at the door...

Things I would buy if I had the money and a debit card (so didnt have to get some random guy on the bus to work to order me stuff  :-\):

A new CPU,
Insurance for my mates car so he can give me free driving lessons,
a new HDD,
Decent internet connection,
Pay off the loan I got after my monitor went bang,
Buy a better monitor,
buy a new soundcard,
Think of something that doesnt make me sound computer obssesed ;)

Well, thats a list off the top of my head. Basically go round shops and anything you see that you might want, pick it up, buy it.
/me puts his work hat on.........

.....Dont buy stuff, saving is better than buying yada yada yada (we all know thats total BS) ;D

Lol, I was just thinking about this too, and here's my list:

This really cool fantasy axe I found (http://www.bonesandblades.co.uk/catalog/images/alien%20axe.jpg)
A $1,100 pair of custom-crafted Butterfly Swords *drools* (http://www.wle.com//products/w104c.html)
Chinese Wind & Fire Wheels (http://www.wle.com//products/w044.html)
United Cutlery "Samurai 3000" Katana (http://www.blades-uk.com/large_pic.php?product_id=43)
Anything (Swords (http://www.kitrae.net/swords_of_the_ancients.html) or daggers) (http://www.kitrae.net/kr_fantasy_knives.html) by Kit Rae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kit_Rae)
The Excalibur "ExoMax" hunting crossbow (http://www.grovergear.com/images/exomax_image.jpg) or
The Viper Extreme 185-lb. Crossbow (that's powerful) (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=280476#)
Even though I don't even know how to use compound bows, this looks awesome... (http://www.sportsmansguide.com/cb/cb.asp?a=254153)
A Pearl Drum kit (http://www.anthonysmusic.com.au/shop/images/pearl_elx_drumkit.gif)
Blade's coat (http://www.blades-uk.com/large_pic.php?product_id=1561)
New rock boots. Specifically Demonia Gravel-20s (http://www.bulletproofcupid.co.uk/assets/DemoniaLarge/Gravel-20.JPG) or Whatever the hell these are (http://www.dangerousbrothers.co.uk/images/New%20Boots.jpg)
A Mauser c-96 "Broomhandle" (http://website.lineone.net/~braithwaitej/mainsite/overview/guns/mauser.jpg)
A P-90 Submachine gun (http://world.guns.ru/smg/smg13-e.htm)

And something else that doesn't make me out to be so weapon-obsessed :P

(God, I'm starting to salivate... I need to stop...)

If interest > inflation, then yes.  But...

General stuff devalues way too quickly as it gets outdated/used anyway. There would have to be some *huge* amounts of inflation to compensate for that.

So don't get "general" stuff.

@emeraldfool:  Pearl drumkits are crap.  For cheep kits, pacifica and tama are better.  For expensive kits, Ayotte, Premier, Gretsch, and DW are better.  There's no reason to spend money on a Pearl kit.

Actually, it's between Pearl, Pr (http://www.cumbriadrums.co.uk/images/pictures/kits/premier/metallic.jpg)em (http://www.drumchops.com/Premier/BlueShimmerweb.jpg)ier (http://www.renaissance-music.com/images/premierkit.jpg) and Ludwig.

My friend has a Pearl set and it sounds and plays awesome, and he'll argue with you for hours if you try to convince him they're not the best things ever :P I've always liked Premier (mainly 'cause they're cool, and are always like the most expensive...) but Ludwig have made some of the Coolest Drum Kits Ever (http://homepage.mac.com/sonordrum/.cv/sonordrum/Sites/.Pictures/BIG%20Drum%20Sets!!!!!!!!!!!/lightedludwig.jpg-thumb_269_202.jpg)... Just keep it with yourself... and don't spend it with useless things.

My advice is that you save one third of the money for the future, spend one third on yourself and those around you in some memorable way, and the final third you give away to a worthy cause of your choice.

Id prefer:

Spend one third on myself...... then do two thirds less work :)

As an old man with the imenent doom of retirment stalking me, I have a much different view of saving money then I did yesteryear. Saving money is just like exersize and taking care of your body, it is a habit and a way of life that pays off in the long run. In hindsight I can say you are never to young to start saving, with less and less companies having fulltime employees and retirment packages, all part timers and self employed workers need to take care of their own future financial needs.

I do however love to go out and get that nice new shinney toy now and again ;)

[Boring post about saving money]

Saving money is a good thing IMO. In my line of work im constantly seeing people who have ended up in large amounts of debt because of unexpected events in their lives. When these events occur people are forced to borrow money for high interest lenders (Home-credit companies being a good example of dirty scumbags), and then end up paying off their loans and the 400% interest that is applied to them. If these people had bothered to save a couple of pounds a week they would have had access to their savings rather than being forced to get loans.

On a related note, the earlier you save for retirement the less you need to save each time. A quick example is to halve your age and whatever number you get should be the percentage of your current income that you are saving. This would normally give someone sufficient income at the time of retirement to maintain their current standard of living.

And to think ive just got home from work and im sat here typing this  :-\

The problem is that money means more to a young person than it does to an old person because young people make less money.

It means that saving money when you're young is not as easy as saving money when you have a career.

Well, obviously, but it's still something. Something more than you would've had, anyway...
And I think the half-your-age thing makes it clear that you shouldn't be saving that much as a young person anyway (what's 10% of a €10,000 salary anyway...)

Its all relative anyway. 10% of less money is less money. I have to say that I dont save at all. I do have a savings account but it has about 4 pounds in it  :-\

That's what I mean. 1,000 euro isn't much in the grand scheme of things, but at least you'll have enough money to say, buy a new fridge if yours suddenly craps out. There's nothing worse than trying to get by without a fridge for a few months...

Id have to say that it would be worse to have you PC go down, Like my monitor broke last week and I had to get a loan to buy a new one, only 150 pounds but if I had saved it wouldnt be costing me as much, perfect example of why saving is better than borrowing, the fact the loan will cost me about 2 pounds in total interest charges isnt the point :)

Saving is good, borrowing is bad. Spending is fun though :)
