I normally play about 28 to 30 hours per week... sometimes more on the weekends if I am able.

I enjoy chatting and roleplaying with those around the world.

Xillix,

I never downloaded v.3.20. I refuse to re-download the game. I'm actually waiting for one of the programmers to get off their bums and upload those files, one of these days... :'(

About 8-16 hours a week... GENERALLY....

On rare occasions I play more or less those hours.

When I was jobless and at home, I played quite all day.

Now, in the office (where I "live" over the work week) I can't play at all due to technical issues (satellite connection, no UDP support). So I can only play on weekends now.
__

Shame on you, Xordan, and all Zeroers. :P Especially developers must play. How else should they feel if they do something valuable?

Xillix,

IIRC (but I frequently don't) and I've been playing since version 0.3.006 the updater when it was working was used for incremental style updates not full client upgrades.

Also of course the size of the files downloaded will be similar whether full client download or updater, so the only person you're really hurting is yourself

IIRC, the Windows installer compresses files a little tighter than ZIP, if possible. Doesn't it use LZX as compression algorithm (LZSS with a much bigger search window than just 32 KB, as used in PKZIP)? So the installer can even be smaller than a full update.

I used to play during every waking moment, but lately I just have other stuff I do. I'm lucky if I play at all during a week, though if I do I am generally on for about two-three hours. So I just put less than one for average.

Though I normally live in PS  ;)

I would find even more time..but...It gets harder at times and ..at times...it seems the interest is in making PS more "pretty"..than "Playable"..but I will not stop tring to put in as much time as my awakened hours allow  :)

Sadly work eats up a lot of my leisure time these days, and the weekend is pretty much all I have at the moment, however I do rather enjoy a few hours over saturday-sunday just to see what's going on.

At least I have the energy and time for IRC most evenings,

I'll admit it, I'm an adict.  :P
I play usually around 16-20 hours each week. Monday-Fridays about 2 hours a night and then usually 8 hours on the weekends. I can't help it, I've got nothing better to do.

Usually, I play 0 hours.  Sometimes I'll play a couple hours, but not often.  I prefer spending my sparse free time coding, helping out around my preferred distro's forum, or making a little money with occasional linux-related jobs.  The rest of my time is spent in bed, in class, in transit, and, when doing homework, either in trance or in pain...

I do like watching PS grow though, and do want to play more than I do.  But it will have to wait until I have more time.  Mostly I play it during Christmas breaks.  I might play more next summer too, since I probably won't spend it at my dad's internet-less farm like I usually do.

If players complain, we have done something valuable. If they complain a lot, we have done something really valuable. If they don't complain, we should really start working on something valuable :P

I've just been coming back from about 2 months of not playing at all. But this last week I"ve already logged 20 hours on the thing. I voted 8-16 to be safe, but when I first started, it was definitely Planeshift tucking me into bed every night. It's all I did for a month.  On a side note, if part of your RP is to not wear armor around everywhere [I'm a merchant not a fighter] then never leave for more than 2 months. You come back and no one knows you and they all think you're a newb. Anyway, have fun playing guys.

My tendency is to sign on and check out what's happening at Harnquist and the tavern. If there's someone who I recognize, or if there's a conversation happening that attracts my interest, then I stay.  If not, I sign off unless I'm going to be around my computer but not using my computer.

I have recently joined I would play more but the monsters being offline for fighting all the time spolils the game. I understand that this is a Alpha test but it still makes the game a poor playing experience. Love the game when all its parts are working but that recently; at least as far as a newbie like me is concerned is not that often. I do quests and try to get skills for crafting but the fighting is intrinsicly linked to both so its unusual for them to be seperated in this way

If lack of things to poke with a sword spoils the game for you, I pity you. Go out and interact with other characters. Its the greatest part of the game.

A very unlogical deduction, calling someone a new player because they gave you advice on how to enjoy Planeshift.

Either way, I think you're just not interested in a game that is being developed so I suggest you go find a completed game to have fun with or come by regularly to check the status out and only play when things are stabilized. Bugs and NPC server downtime will be a recurring issue with Planeshift for as long as it is being developed.

For the last time as its not what the threads about sorry for the hijack the word "pity" is not advice, and please read what I said I never said I did not play all aspects of the game (including player interaction, but not soley MSN).  Dont assume im not an experienced games tester, I make no asumptions about you.
Fighting is part of the game and is linked to all aspects of the game including player interaction ie duels. If the game owner wanted a copy of MSN (Microsoft copywright) im sure it would not be as popular as this game. Im not here to defend my self to ever person who doesnt read my comment properly, roleplaying needs people to read the whole thing not the bits they want to read. So if people want to give players advice then they should do so in a manner which roleplaying is akin to community and respect, people get the respect they offer. Im done here knock yourself out supporting each other at least that shows community spirit but if you have a problem with what I said first read it properly.

You didn't mention roleplay once, that's what Parallo was pointing out.  So... no, he didn't misread your comment, if anything, you mistyped it.

Now, stop being a sour puss and enjoy the game.

I think he just meant that since fighting is linked to everything via pps, its quite hard to do anything at all when the main source of exp is down.

I agree, one of the problems that I see is that there are not enough quests given by a single NPC (currently, although I completely understand this is a work in progress).  Many key NPCs offer a maximum of three quests; I would expect them to offer six or seven, where the reward XP becomes greater as the NPCs' questlines progress.

On topic:  I play when I have time to, but always in my house nowadays.  I would play more if I could get the thing working on my Vista laptop.

Well yeah, but you're still left with the problem of finding them.  Another thing is that NPCs could make recommendations to other NPCs that offer similar quests, when they have no other jobs to offer.  For example, Harnquist could say "I have no other jobs for you right now, try Trasok in Akkaio" or something. (Yes I know I'm stealing ideas from other games)

Why would he send you to his only business rival for miles? There is plenty there to be found. Its just not shoved in your face.

even though quests offer experience as well, the time and effort it takes to do them far outweighs the time and effort it would take to kill one or two monsters, and chances are, the monsters would give more exp...though I like doing quests, and they are fun, they just dont give enough exp in comparison. considering it takes about 90 or so to level anything for me other than stats, receiving 10 or so from a quest that takes over an hour...

Quote

I agree with you there, but he could recommend somebody in an unrelated or complementary position, within Hydlaa.  For example, Harn would probably feel pretty good about himself if he sent somebody over to the tavern to help out.  It wouldn't hurt his business any, would still help someone else, and might give him some points with the staff there ("Hey Harn!  Thanks for sending that kid over here, we really needed the help today!")

Only people who are likely to care would bother doing that for you though, and the more malicious ones might try sending you miles out of your way to somebody who's unlikely to give you a task at all.

Were the above implemented, another thing that could be done later would be to have the database store a "bulletin board" for the NPCs, so that Harn would actually be aware that such-and-such person is looking for an errand boy.  That would be more finicky to implement though, and you'd have to make sure that they only know what they ought to know (as opposed to knowing about some irrelevant little errand on the complete other end of Yliakum...)

I don't actually foresee that being implemented.  Just adding some clouds for the brainstorms.

I did not mean for you to interpret what I said literally; it was an example and it isn't even clear that the two are rivals.  Now that this has been brought up, I suppose another idea is that NPCs could suggest who not to work for, in hopes that the players, uh, don't.  After completing Trasok's questline, he could include something like "If you're still looking for work to do, I insist that you do not do any work for my competitor in the Steel Bazaar" in whatever he says.

This thread has gotten seriously off-topic and should really be forked.

I spent ca. 20-25 hours per week in PS... and when I look at the results of the poll I somehow think some people read the question as PER DAY ;D
One hour per week? Can you still call it playing?

playing one hour a week...how do you GET anywhere?(If you play one hour a week, 60 min/ 7days = 8.57 minutes each day) Wow, there must be some really fast computers out there. Not judging, but i would think most would spent more time than 8 and half minutes playing such a good game like PS.
