Since it looks like Alchemy is on it's way, it would be funny and nice if when someone unsuccessfully made a potion, there was the potential for it exploding and RP covering the person with soot or for bigger explosions, doing damage. It would be great if it could potentially affect others in the nearby area.
-
Eck... that sounds painful. Maybe there could be some sort of a warning before it actually happens, then people could clear out?
-
Or maybe possible random effects (or maybe not so random) some good some bad if you screwed up.
-
I wouldn't be a fan of random effects. Maybe "random" as in "chosen from a pre-arranged list." As soon as you say "some good" you create unintended effects. What if a potion that normally requires really rare ingredients can result if you mix two really common ones and make a mistake, for example? Why, people would just stock up on healing potions and food while they continue to purposely break alchemy in the hopes of getting that requires more effort. The idea itself isn't too bad, but we'd need to tread carefully.
-
Well, my idea was just in relation to explosions. This idea came from the fact that I RP my character as mixing potions from time to time, since her father was an apothecary, and sometimes it ends up in smoke. You should hear Illysia tell the story about the time she "made" a tefu potion... ;D
-
Maybe poitions should make good bombs but should not explode while made. It's to cartoonish.
-
Maybe there could be some other effects, like certain potions bubbling for a few seconds when mixed, or a message saying "the potion starts to smell different" (or just put something in the new item's description about the scent).

Actually most chemical compounds don't explode here in earth. So i am going to go with that for PS as well. Most concoctions would just become useless. Also almost every single one using anything but herbs should be harmful to humans.Drinking some CuNO3 is not going to be helpful for HP regen.
Alchemy should rely mostly on player knowledge of what to combine.Even the most skilled alchemist wont get gold from lead.
Fizzled - Completely ruin the potion and its ingredients. This is most likely to happen to unskilled players who use wrong material combinations.
Ruin - You loose half of the materials used in the potion because you were adapt enough at the trade to notice the potion was coming out wrong.
Explode - Only feasible with certain components and only when fire(Or something similar in temperature) is involved.
I know this could use improvement but you get the general idea.
-
Imagine the poor alchemist who whipped up a batch of acetone peroxide by accident :P Alchemy should be subject to side and/or runaway reactions, just as chemists IRL have to deal with 'em.
-
I can imagin that xD Gye's just working on some random experiment, and BOOM! It blows up in his face.
-
Don't forget alchemy is a lot about magic too. Otherwise it would just be chemistry.
IMO by adding magic to the pot, you increase its energy and this may cause some reactions to happen much faster than normally they would to the point they can be called explossions. Magic, by adding more energy can probably make some reactions possible at all, what you wouldn't expect otherwise.
-
Also, side and runaway reactions aren't always explosions, they may produce gasses (sometimes toxic, sometimes harmless), contaminate the end-product, or cause an unwanted state change (imagine what would happen if all your valuable chemicals boiled off into the atmosphere!)

/me runs into the tavern with a load of potion bottles, and blows it up.
Seriously, i'd love to blow the whole of hydlaa up... it would be fun.. maybe oja too... and gugrontid..
-
A particularly evil character might create noxious clouds in Hydlaa on purpose...that'd be even better than a mob invasion.

Y'know, I hadn't thought of that one...
-
Or get enough flammable chemicals together to actually blow up a building :P

Didn't i already mention that?

Why are these potions idea for causing mayhem? ::| I was suggesting it as maybe just something interesting to add to the process of potion making. ;) You know maybe something to laugh about later, not to hurt anyone or anything.
-
I know, but it's a whole lot more fun to cause mayhem!

the midnight bomber which bombs at midnight.....
a few thoughts... while few chemicals EXPLODE IRL, this is a magical realm, and they are trying to make powerful concoctions....
If trying to make tea, not likely to burn down the house... but meth labs and making bombs are dangerous... to draw a real world equivalent....
so makeing a healing potion that appears to be ok.. but hurts instead? a mana potion that strips mana instead... also, do not need fire for heat or energy. exothermic reactions also... Many things need a cold water bath to keep them from heating up to the point of exploding... how much more when you add magic to it?
I once was asked to help this Chem guy on his master thesis... lil ole me.... he was a friend and needed a new set of eyes... frankly did not want my help... but his experiment he did thousands of times was no longer working.... He made his tubing too long... so it was sticking into the water... he wanted to see the bubbles.. but when reaction cooled, it was sucking the water back into the vessel. ruining the experiment. even high level people make mistakes and ruin their recipes... sometimes...

Illysa is right some times mabe it could turn everyone to ducks or clams mabe even bubbles! :D
-
turn everyone to... hmm.. i know.. BAD POSTS!
Mwahahahhahahahhaaaa...
