Title: Glass and paper gui skin
Post by: Cherppow on May 26, 2008, 04:20:43 pm
Greetings,

Some time has passed - and old guys like me tend to get nostalgic about the past. So, time to cherish the good old times...

Glass and Paper PS GUI skin
Old papers and polished glass for everyone. A custom skin for PS Steel Blue. No window xml changes, just the art.

Download
GP_skin.zip (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/GP_skin.zip) (5.0 MB)

Installation
1. Download "GP_skin.zip" from above
2. Move the zip into your PS/art/skins directory.
3. Run PlaneShift setup program and select GP_skin
4. Launch PlaneShift

Notes
- Untested windows due to lack of in-game resources: group, banking
- Source files available on request (~146MB)
- Please add a screenshot to any bug report posts

Special thanks
To LigH who coded PlaneShift pawsWindow Map Viewer. The software has been of great help.

Thanks for your interest,

Wow, looks awesome, gonna try it :)

EDIT: can we get that stickied, please?

EDIT2:
The top level menu bar looks tiny, but is too big. In fact it is as big as to hover icons. If another window is right below the menu list it is impossible to reach the close button of it - you will have to move the window for that. So far thats the only issue I can see

wow, some really innovative ideas!
If it works as well as it looks, then you have made really great job.

according to svn you missed one background that has been added for the comming release [i have not tested the rest yet]
http://planeshift.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/planeshift/trunk/data/gui/activemagicwindow.xml?r1=1300&r2=1299&pathrev=1300

there is a new background just for the active magic window, i am not sure what it will look like yet, but you dont have one in your imagelist that i can see

when you select the skin in pssetup it looks like
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/8595/snapshot89rv1.jpg
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/1490/shot273bs1.jpg gm window

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/6214/shot274lq5.jpg quest window
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7519/shot275cf4.jpg guild permissions window
http://img528.imageshack.us/img528/3610/shot276kh4.jpg trade window
http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/2618/shot276gs1.jpg banking window
http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/9865/shot278fu0.jpg game board
http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/6002/shot279jz7.jpg I have a semi edited inventory window and it looks like the doll is shadowed, this could be fixed with a few edits to the overlay to the doll window
also if you move the toolbar to the side config you cant get the buttons to be any closer then they are in that screenshot

Looks pretty good to me, the text in the menu bar was pretty small but increasing it helped. I think if you are going to hide the graphical icons there it might be better to remove them altogether rather than have then pop up on mouse over. Is there a cfg file in the zip where that can be done locally?

if you edit the imagelist you can do this but other then that there is no way to do this.

I am not sure if any of the other skins do this but it did not affect any of the character creation backgrounds. It does not seem important, but I thought I'd mention it. I am virtually certain the other skins do not either.

That's so much better than the stone or the elves skin! Great work Cherppow  \\o//

Have you thought about including it in the official release?

One thing I noticed is that the bottom left menu button is labeled combat. I would label it status instead as the window it controls is used for more than combat.

Greets,

Thanks for the comments and suggestions everyone. Especially to Caarrie for taking the time to post screenshots of the untested windows. I've made some modifications to the art, and updated the download links on my original post.

I hope you all enjoy it. :) The overlapping of the top menu (or toolbar as named in gui files) is a known issue. PS gui focuses the windows even from transparent areas. Here even more so when most of the toolbar is transparent. There are two 'fixes' that can help:  One can move the toolbar to the bottom of the screen like seen in the new screenshot 1024x768 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/GP_screenshot_1024x768.png). That doesn't fix the problem, but minimizes the effects. The other solution is what Prolix mentioned: to disable the popups alltogether. That way the whole toolbar window can be scaled smaller, avoiding the overlapping problem. I added an additional copy of imagelist.xml to the GP_skin.zip, that should do the trick. Just rename the imagelist_nopopup.xml to imagelist.xml. Then log in PS and scale the toolbar to your liking.

I've also made some changes to the backdrops, using Caarries screenshots as guide. Exchange window will still have a black background, since it's using "Standard Background" - an image also used by many other gui widgets. So it's impossible to make a specific backdrop for it, without editing window xml... and I'm not going there. ;) I did add the "Active Magic Background" resource though, but I'm not going to make a specific background for that either, not before it's layout is finished and known.

Finally, I forgot to mention that there is also a custom target marker included in the zip. It doesn't install automatically, as markers aren't really part of gui, but I thought it would make a nice change. To apply it, go to GP_skin.zip/effects/ and copy marker02.dds to your PS/art/effects directory. Be sure to backup the existing file. To see a sneak-peak of the new marker, see screenshot 800x600 (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/GP_screenshot_800x600.png).

To Caarrie:
Thanks for the screenshots, I've updated gm, quest reward and guild permission window backdrops. For the setup program mess I can do little; it uses examine window backdrop, but doesn't seem to take into account the texturerect-setting. In-game examine window looks ok though. The inventory doll shade is intentional. I tried to create an illusion that there is a slightly coloured glass on top of the char. And also to lessen the contrast between the doll and the window bg, so it wouldn't jump out so much. The equip slot icons are also left out intentionally, to make the inventory screen less messy. There's still the tooltip to tell what slot is what.

To Prolix:
The login and char creation screens are in PS/art/skins/base/client_base.zip, so they can't be changed with traditional skins. On my first skin, the elves one, I did create unique backgrounds for the char creation and loading screens too. But since they're not distributed with the client, I doubt anyone uses them anymore. Thanks for the combat - label tip, I've changed it to status.

To peeg:
Hmm, don't know. Haven't talked to the devs. If people like it, I've no problem donating it to AB. But for now, this was just an evening project for me.

To Tuxide:
LigH is ultimate the man! \o/

Later guys,
- Cherppow

As for the overlapping issue. I for myself like the popup feature of your skin and hopefully many others do like it too. So a code fix for such skins would be great.
But before some people will bash me with phrases like "not possible" or "not important enough" or "invalid feature request" or whatever one may throw at me: I still think it'd be a good idea to fix the code that causes the issue rather than removing a possible feature from a skin (and other skins in the future). I know it won't get a high priority as feature request, but as soon as someone is willing to and/or gets the time for it, it could be done :)

First of all  \\o// Very nice smooth and clean work :D I really like it!

Second, I might have a semi-solution to the popup problem. If you roll over a menu item it pop 'down'. maybe it should stay down when you select it?
Most people have at least the chat window selected so they can see from that to where the menu-gui reaches ;)

As i said in my post i have a modified inventory window, so what i showed there is *not* what is in your skin, for that matter i have no idea what the normal inventory screen looks like in your gui due to my modification. I know some slots dont look right but it is a wip and i need devs permission before i can submit the code for it, it also does need a few pieces of art that your skin is missing maybe i will talk to you sometime about how we can add them and use them if i make this code public at a later date. [does require code changes so i am not sure how many people will be willing to try it.]

One thing I have noticed after downloading the updated version is that on the menu at least there is inconsistency in the capitalizations. Some letters are capital while others are not. For example 'iNVENTORY', 'GUiLD'. On closer examination it is just the i's which are not capitalized. It looks a little odd.

Greetings,

Thanks for the comments everyone. Sorry for the long respond time, I'm on holiday. :)

To Prolix: Aye, that's true. I'll try fixing it once I return home. (The I characters were capitalized at first but I changed their look. This was because on small resolutions they looked very similar to T characters.)

To Nalain Tarek: Hmm. Does the GP skin appear like below in the setup program when you select it?

1. If it does: The skin is installed properly and the zip is working, but somehow the skin fails to load when in-game. You could try re-downloading the zip, just to be sure there are no broken files. If it still doesn't work, try checking PS client log files if they reveal which file fails to load.

2. If it does not: The skin is not installed properly, or the zip is not working.  Be sure you've copied (don't unzip) the zip to correct directory. If you have many versions of PS installed, check that it's the version which you use to play. You can also try renaming GP_skin.zip -> elves.zip (backup the original) and then select elves skin from setup program. If it still doesn't appear as above picture, there's clearly something wrong with the zip. Maybe there is compatibility problems between windows and mac zip files? You could try unzipping the package into a temporary directory then packing it again with a mac based zip software. Also try viewing some of the .png, just to check that they are compatible with mac. Then copy the zipped archive into PS/art/skins. If it still doesn't work, try checking the PS client logs if they reveal what the problem is.

If anyone else with mac could post their experiences, it would be appreciated.

That's all I can think of, I hope some of it helps.

really nice gui to play with Cherppow  \\o// well done!

For some reason it doesn't work for me, I got it, put the zip in the skins folder, selected with the setup, but i end up using the default skin, any idea why?

BTW i'm running a mac OSX

I got the gui to work on this Mac:

OS X 10.4.11
iMac G5
PowerPC G5  (3.1)
CPU Speed: 2 GHz
Memory: 1 GB
ATI Radeon 9600: 128 MB

If you try downloading it via Safari, it may decompress the zip file (single left click opens a new window and then starts downloading). This is what happened to me the first time and rezipping the downloaded folder didn't help.

Instead, try right clicking (or for those poor souls with a single button mouse then Control and click) and choose Download Linked File - this doesn't open a new window but instead just starts the download process. Do not unzip the file. Follow the rest of the instructions as stated and it should load up.

Probably not up to me, but don't you think that if this skin be added, there will be 4 skins for updating everytime the game develops, creating new windows and such? You could consider putting such stuff on main site in downloads with a remark for which version it was last updated. Or putting in game with the same information and update only when feeling like ;p Just a suggestion.

Only the art is different for this skin, it uses the same XML files as Default, Elves or Stone. Generally, if Default and Elves work, the rest work too.

I'm speaking about exactly that =\
how many times new art was needed for skins while game developed. Or did i dreamed it up? :s
Title: Re: Glass and paper gui skin
Post by: Caarrie on September 09, 2008, 04:05:34 pm
in the last lets say 4 releases, there have only been maybe 3 art changes to the gui not that much to make it any harder to keep up with a new skin. Also before anymore major gui changes are done the whole gui will be redone making all old skins not work anymore

That full redesign has been on the table for years now. It'll probably take some more years.

Cherppow If this is not donated to ps, can i upload the skin to the ps3dmods repro so that it does not get lost if for some reason it gets removed from your site? [that means the skin becomes gpl as well]

edit: got it to work

also would be great to see some xml mods for this.. a lot of caarrie's stuff works but uses the wrong backgrounds.. the infowindow has a blank tan colour and it kind of pokes you in the eye lol. I'm a big fan of her inventory and infowindow mod :)

in the folder that you have your logs in locate planeshift.cfg look for the following:
Code: [Select]
PlaneShift.GUI.ControlWindow.CurrentStyle = 3
PlaneShift.GUI.ControlWindow.Width = 446
PlaneShift.GUI.ControlWindow.Height = 31
try changing the values there to something that works for you and see if that helps any

also for the background issue open the xml files in data/gui and find the line that has "GM Background" and try adding "Options Background" instead, launch the client and see if they work a bit better, I have NOT tested this change ingame.

Actually I have done some xml mods for this skin too. Haven't made them available until now, but if you're interested I can upload them... I mostly moved things around a bit in info, chat, skills and inventory windows to suit my personal preferences.

I don't have a complete changelog, as I didn't plan on uploading this, but here are some features I remember:
 - see more of the inventory items at a time
 - chat bg doesn't look ugly when resized
 - chat channel tabs represented by icons
 - lower icons hideable by resize (seldom used)
 - mannequin removed from skills window
 - health & p.stamina colour matched (vs. mana & m.stamina)

I know I am goin to sound like a newb at this but thats only because I am, the first skinn you told us not to unzip it, so it worked for me now this one you say to unzip it, which would be fine but it automatically unzips unlike the first version, I would like to see this one on my client so that I can try it out I like the first one alot and will keep using it if I can't get this one to work. Zipping/compressing it again doesn't seem to help I see it in the Setup choices but when I close PSsetup or launch the client it auto reverts to my last selection.

I play on a Mac.

Greets Hrothbert,

No problem mate, this one's a bit tricky. I'll try to go it through step-by-step. Note that this gui contains XML changes, and it will mess up the other skins! So be sure to back up your PS/data/gui before copying over any files.

1) Save the zip from above (do not unzip) into your PS/art/skins/ directory.
2) The zip contains XML files that need to be unzipped into PS/data/gui/, we'll need to get those out from the zip
3) If you don't know how to do the above, duplicate the whole zip.
4) Unzip the whole duplicated zip into a temporary directory.
5) Go to that directory, and you should see multiple subdirs, and two files.
6) Delete everything else on that directory, except the subdirectory "data/".
7) Go into your PS/data/ directory and take a backup copy of the entire gui/ subdirectory.
8) Go back into the temp directory and move the data/ directory into your PS/ directory.
9) Ready! Run PS setup and select GP_radical skin.

I think the auto-unzip is a Mac feature. To circle around it try this:

...

Follow the rest of the instructions as stated and it should load up.
...

Thanks for your interest,

Thanks alot I got it to work finally but I had to move each item from the 'data' folder in the unzipped skin to the 'data' folder in the root directory seperatly or else it just replaces the folder, DOn't matter it works now and I like to the look of it. very clean and large chat window is nice.

Thanks so much yet again

Greetings,

A small update on GP radical version. Just to make it more... radical. :P

Changes:
 - Removed most of the window borders & headers
 - Changed toolbar appearance & button order
 - Opened windows' buttons now disappear from the toolbar
 - Re-designed the spellbook
 - Shrunk the chat window icons a bit
 - many font size & colour fixes
 - Fixed minor positioning errors in questbook and petitions
 - Fixed multiple buttons that used title bar graphic as bg image
 - Changed the layout on some of the small cluttered windows (eg. container & char description)
 - Made a new background for readbook (Unfortunately the borders can't be removed, as X is the only way to close)
 - Shrunk the glyphs window a bit

Download:
The files are same as before.
Screenshot (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/GP_radical_screenshot_1680x1050.png)
GP_radical.zip (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/GP_radical.zip)

Install:
- Download GP_radical.zip to your PS/art/skins.
- Extract the data/ subdirectory from the zip.
- Copy the xml files there to your PS/data/gui/ directory. (Be sure to take backups!)
- Copy the marker2.dds from GP_radical.zip/effects/ into your PS/art/effects/ directory. (Optional, makes the target marker look different.)

Thanks for your interest,

This is even better than the other radical skin, I like the look of the changed target highlighter, and an actual spell 'book' Very nice.

Greetings,

Aye, your interest actually sparked mine, and I've started working on this mod again. So it's heavily under development.
Latest screenshot (http://users.tkk.fi/~vrantapu/PlaneShift/GP_radical_preview_1680x1050.png) that shows a little what kind of style I'm steering towards. Basically taking away all the distractions, minimizing text, and using icons instead. I'm also thinking of more context-sensitive window backdrops, instead of a single forced style. I know it's a big job, but like the spellbook on earlier screenshots, it could go towards immersing the player into the world.

Thanks,
