I am trying to play the game on a mini mac 10.5.8, 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
The game crashes every time at the 'create new character' screen, when I click on any of the races. Also if I click on the 'advanced' tab.
I have just installed the new software updates and restarted the computer but that didn't help.
What to do?
Thanks in advance.

I renounced to use PS on my mac mini because of the Intel graphic card. I play on a Windows XP notebook with Nvidia card, the only thing for wich I've found useful Microsoft software, lately.

Hello!
I have exactly the same problem but on a Dell Latitude Laptop with Windows XP. Any idea of a solution to this problem? :'(
-
Just a thought, make sure that in Planeshift Launcher/Settings you have Elves enabled under Current Skin. Having no skin selected will crash the application.

The skin is selected.
I also tried with a minimum configuration, to uninstall and re-install the client many times over, to download it from every mirror available, etc... but so far, nothing worked.
The only thing I didn't do is to use the bi-torrent... as I obtain an average download time of 4w 2d and 6h, which is a bit on the long side. :P

Mine is the D520 (with boosted memory)... you're going to say that the problem comes from me, aren't you? :'(

I know this (http://www.hydlaaplaza.com/smf/index.php?topic=21401.0) is terribly outdated (what a surprise \o/)...but some of the hints on how to report errors and getting help still apply.
- Post all available information. We're not psychic; we need all the information we can get to help you. Example post:
Operating System: Windows XP SP2
Processor: Intel P4 2.66 Ghz
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon Mobility 7500
System Memory: 1 GB
Video Memory: 16 MB
I just downloaded the game, and ran the updater. The game <insert problem here>. I tried <whatever you did>, and <whatever results you got>. Please help me. Thanks.
Please note that if you graphics card has "shared" memory, you must state so. The "shared" RAM is very slow, and takes away from the main system. This setup is generally on the bad, cheap, onboard cards; the good cheap onboard cards don't even do that.
For windows systems it should be added that a pastebin of errorlog.txt (I think in the PS install-dir) might be very helpful to identify the problem.
There are also some good advices there what could be tried to get the game to run:
- Run the updater
- Update your graphics card's drivers
- Try switching to windowed/fullscreen mode
- Turn on/off the vertex buffer
- Disable/enable sound
Though I understand that a sticky with infos like this
Server name: Laanx
Hosted by: Fragnetics
URL: laanx.fragnetics.com
Port: UDP 7777
or links to the abandoned old forum can't be taken serious by anyone.

I was expecting a post like this. ;D
Operating System: Windows XP Professional SP2 (5.1, Build 2600)
Processor: 2 x Intel T2300 @ 1.66Ghz (2 CPUs x86 Family 6 Model 14 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1662 Mhz)
System Memory:
Total Physical Memory: 2,048.00 MB
Available Physical Memory: 800.83 MB
Total Virtual Memory: 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory: 1.96 GB
'Graphics Card': Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset Family
Chip Type: Intel(R) GMA 950
DAC Type: Internal
Approx. Total Memory: 224MB
I just downloaded the game for the 8th or 9th times in 24h, and tried to run the updater. The game <has obvious suicidal tendencies, when it doesn't complete the update, and refuses stubbornly to work as it comes to choosing the race on the Chars Creation page - it freezes and/or crashes and/or make the computer crash>. I tried <absolutely everything I could think of: unstalling/re-installing, updating all my drivers, running the pslaunch.exe with the minimum configuration, using psclient.exe directly, downloading from all available 'mirrors', etc, etc...>, and <zilch! Nada! Nothing! So on and so forth...>. Please help me. Thanks.
:'(

Wed Jul 20 22:14:49 2011, Failed to locate Sound renderer!
At least it seems you have some openAL problems but not sure if that can cause any crash on windows. As it looks you don't have any sound right now anyway...so maybe try to disable sound in the pslauch application.
For the errorlog....mhhh...that is all? Damn...windows is really not very verbose.
Tried setting all graphics options in the launcher to medium?
Another thing to try might be to rename the "%AppData%\PlaneShift" folder to something else and restart with a complete fresh configuration.
Also..do you see the different models of the characters at the char-creation screen?
-
I disabled the sound at the very beginning... and switch the sound config. to Software, just in case.
As for 'fresh' restart, I tried that time and time again with no success.
I can't see any of the models at the char-creation screen. In fact, the 'window' in which the model should appear - or at least, its background - doesn't even look right (bottom at the top, probably upside-down, and nothing but black and pixels at the bottom). :-\
-
Ah..sorry...I though you only reinstalled the game always again. The configuration in "%AppData%\PlaneShift" stays even if you remove the game so it's still the same after a reinstall.
But the real problem is that you can't see the models...This usually indicates some openGL problem. But sorry...as you said you already installed the latest gfx card driver (From the intel homepage...no clue if MicroSoft has drivers for intel gfx cards but the MS drivers usually aren't very good with openGL so it's always better to use the ones from the card's vendor) I'm out of suggestions.
-
for sound renderer problem, try to install this:
http://connect.creativelabs.com/openal/Downloads/oalinst.zip
The Intel graphic card maybe it's another problem. I have a laptop with T5500, but with Nvidia graphic card set to medium. other suggestions?
-
I'm having this SAME EXACT problem. I'm on a PC, Windows 7. I got this computer last year, and it can handle several games, like WoW and such, so I know the graphics aren't a problem. Someone help! I get as far as the bloody screen where you select what your parents did as occupations, and it crashes. Sometimes it crashes earlier. I've repaired the launched, and re-downloaded it several times.
-
Computer specs are still interesting even if your computer runs "several games". WoW uses in the default configuration Direct3D instead of openGL for 3d graphics so being able to run it says nothing about being able to run PS.

Hello PlaneShift forums. I'm new.
Okay, now that that's out of the way - I'm a new user having the same problem as above. I'm not a very technical person, but I am seeking help to fixing this problem - if it can be fixed - so, if anyone has any suggestions as to what I can do, please let me know.
Just like Avane up there, I've downloaded and installed everything just fine, and the client boots up alright too. Once I get into the "create new character" screen, I'll click on a race, and then the game will proceed to "not respond" and insta-crash. I'm pretty well sure all this has to do with graphics, given the evidence of that being the problem these other fine folks have had it would seem, except I'll reiterate - I'm not a very techy person. As such, I have no idea what most of you are on about, so if someone could spell it out in small, small words, I'd appreciate it.
I'm not sure the exact specs of my computer, but a quick look up for eMachines T3604 should tell you what all I have - that, plus 4GB memory. It's a very, very bad computer, but I have been able to play some games on it, and would very much like to get into Planeshift, if I can.
If I can't, well... Darn'. -.-
I can't see any of the models at the char-creation screen. In fact, the 'window' in which the model should appear - or at least, its background - doesn't even look right (bottom at the top, probably upside-down, and nothing but black and pixels at the bottom). :-\
Ooh look, I has a picture like this: http://dkr8.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/fuckedupthingy.jpg
If anyone has any immediate advice they can give, my skype name inadvertently got included on that there screenshot, so please feel free to message me if you can be of any help.
-
it's definitely the video card drivers
-
it's definitely the video card drivers
The /drivers/? So can I just update those, right?
Or is my video card just, well, crap?
._.
-
usually windows drivers for intel cards lack a decent opengl implementation. macosx and linux are better in this department.
-

Well, it's a shame I have a windows computer then. x.x
Oh well, thank you anyway.
-
I am also having a problem of crashing when trying to select a race. After reading the posts I am certain it is my video card. It is an Intel GMA 950. Doing some googling, it appears that it is just crap. There seems to be no way to update it and apparently it is really bad with the OpenGL. Has anyone else had this problem that was able to find a fix.
If not, in researching my card I found people with this card could not play Spore until the game updated something. I am not real good at computer programming but I am willing to put in the time if there is anything I can do and there is someone to help me along.
-
usually linux intel drivers are better that might be a good try if you don't mind sluggish performance and bad glitches
-
I have this problem as well...
When I launch the game I can create my character up to a certain point in time when the client decides to crash.
I've tried changing from window to fullscreen and back, disabling sound, all the graphics options, putting graphics settings very low...still crashes every time.
I can run other games on my computer, it's a Dell PC and has Intel integrated graphics but games with great graphics run fine...LotRO, DDO, CoD4, Alliance of Valiant Arms...
I am really anxious to play PlaneShift but this crashing is really pissing me off.
Please help!

those game use a different graphics api which works only on windows so they aren't a good comparison
-
If I was to use NVIDIA, would that change anything?
~kepėjas
-
a lot provided it's a recent card and not the entry level 2d solution (sometimes even less entry level but designed for stock market workers and those aren't so good for games, actually the opposite)

Thanks to weltall for your help!

Hey guys, new to planeshift and really keen to check it out..but I'm crashing at the character screen also. :(
Running Windows 7 32 bit, with the infamous Intel GMA but mine is 3150. I've updated the drivers and tried various settings in the game options and in the intel control panel but it crashes everytime when i click on a race to choose. I've got the sound disabled so theres no problem there. I've tried deleting the shader something or other file in th app data folder as whas suggested in another post.
I get the message - psclient has stop working, windows is checking for a solution blah blah. Then it fails and goes back to the launcher.

I also have noticed on the download page it says the clients filesize should be 380mb, but I've tried all 5 mirrors and they all are 588mb file. And during the update process there seems to be issues with missing data. Could this be related or is it a separate issue?
Thanks :)
EDIT: Despite a few bugs the game runs fine on my desktop with nVidia card in it. =D

I'm trying to get my friend to start playing PS with me... She's having the exact same isue pretty much. Including the fact that my laptop with an nVidia card works perfectly.
-
intel graphics cards are notorius for beging bad at 3D a nvidia or ati(amd) is recomended to play any game, it's pure luck if ps runs on a intel card.
-
My friend had a very, very similar problem.
She fixed it by running this: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProductFamily=Processors&ProductLine=Desktop&ProductProduct=Intel%C2%AE+Core%E2%84%A2+i5+Processor
She managed to get into the game without any further crashing, but she's still dealing with some seriously strange graphics issues (especially terrain textures).
