id like to start with a compliment that in most cases you are definitly in the right for locking a thread. there are threads out there that only exist for the one lazy or ignorant person who started it and it is a drag on the rest of us. for myself i know that i have many times used the search button with great results and would reccomend it to everyone. however on the other hand i know that the few times that i searched and either was using the wrong word or simply didnt understand after reading a whole thread what exactly i should do were very frustrating i would have been willing to start a new thread with all the flaming that would come along with it just so that someone would answer my specific question. so in conclusion if someone starts a thread and its possible to see from their question how it could be different enough that it warrants it then we should be tolerant even if we ourselves know the obvious answer since to many people the computer langauge that comes so easily to some is incomprehensible to others. but if the thread is something that has been very clearly explained than it most definitly deserves a lockage.
and remember its always better to post in an existing thread (or send someone a note for that matter) than to start a new one.
