Why I lock threads
« on: November 09, 2005, 01:04:42 am »
I am afraid that some people on the forums may not understand why I lock threads and tell people to search when I probably know the answer myself. I\'ve decided to explain myself and open this up to discussion. I will also add a poll so that you can vote on how many threads I should lock. However, please do not vote in the poll unless you post here as well, as I\'d like to know why you vote the way you do. Now, on to the reasons.

My Reasons for Locking Threads
1. Clutter. The first and simplest reason is that many repetitive threads clutter up the forums. If people learn to search instead of just asking (i.e. being lazy), there are less of these repetitive threads. Locking the threads without an answer (except a pointer to the search button, of course) encourages them to search and also ensures that other forum users don\'t have to read through the same stuff over and over again.

2. Independence. What would happen if all the old experienced forum users went on vacation for a week? Anyone with any questions would be stuck waiting. A quick search could turn up the results much faster. Even when we\'re all here, a search is probably a lot faster than posting and waiting for a response.

3. Community. A member who knows how to search well and is willing to do so is a much greater asset to the community than a lazy one that can only ask. He/she will be able to support him/herself and help others with new problems. This also discourages laziness on the part of the forum user, ensuring that all those who come here contribute, or at the least, do not detract.
Do not misunderstand me: posting new threads on issues that have not been discussed before or issues that you can add to is not detracting. This is in fact contributing.
Detracting is posting duplicate threads that have been discussed to death already. I lock threads that detract in the hopes that any further threads posted by the user will contribute.

Not my Reasons for Locking Threads
1. Meanness. I\'m not a mean guy (well, I try not to be ;) ). I don\'t lock threads just because I can. I don\'t do it to make people miserable. That\'s not what being a moderator is about. That\'s not what being a human being is about.

2. Laziness. I\'m not lazy when it comes to forum moderation or Planeshift in general. I wouldn\'t have spent the time to make an updater if I were lazy. I wouldn\'t even be here if I were lazy. Believe me, writing the answer is probably faster than explaining why I\'m locking a thread (a lot of them can be one word answers, even). Forum moderators don\'t get to be moderators because they\'re lazy.

Alright, I\'ve posted my reasons, now I leave the rest to you. Vote in the poll, discuss in this thread, and I\'ll try to suit my style to your wishes. However, in general, my goal is to create a neat independent community, so don\'t expect radical changes. Please also post reasons along with any requests you make of me. I\'d like to understand why you\'d like me to do a certain thing, instead of just what you want me to do. Thank you for taking the time out to read this and post!

Heh, but I like to give them some input. Plus, it\'s good to hear their opinions either way. ;)

id like to start with a compliment that in most cases you are definitly in the right for locking a thread. there are threads out there that only exist for the one lazy or ignorant person who started it and it is a drag on the rest of us. for myself i know that i have many times used the search button with great results and would reccomend it to everyone. however on the other hand i know that the few times that i searched and either was using the wrong word or simply didnt understand after reading a whole thread what exactly i should do were very frustrating i would have been willing to start a new thread with all the flaming that would come along with it just so that someone would answer my specific question. so in conclusion if someone starts a thread and its possible to see from their question how it could be different enough that it warrants it then we should be tolerant even if we ourselves know the obvious answer since to many people the computer langauge that comes so easily to some is incomprehensible to others. but if the thread is something that has been very clearly explained than it most definitly deserves a lockage.
and remember its always better to post in an existing thread (or send someone a note for that matter) than to start a new one.

I\'ll just say that I normally hate locked threads, but I haven\'t seen one you\'ve locked that seemed unjust.  I mean, you\'re no Moogie, but that\'s because you\'re not really trying.

I\'m a big First Amendment guy, so you\'ll hear me call you names the moment I think you\'re being unfair.

Don\'t take this as praise, take as factual statement.  This is praise: you have a cool icon and signature.

Thank you all for your responses. It\'s good to know that most of you don\'t think I\'m being too harsh. If you feel afraid to post for fear of great retribution, don\'t be. ;)

The reason I started this thread myself is that I was worried people who might not like some of my locking might be fearful of \"great wrath,\" etc. for posting a thread questioning me. Please, don\'t be. If you have ever have any issues with me that involve the general Mac community, please feel free to post. Unless your thread is abusive/flaming, I will he happy to discuss my actions with you and the community. That said, please keep private matters to PMs.

Anyway, I\'m glad to hear such a good response and will continue as I have been until for now. This thread will remain for about a week so that everyone has a chance to voice their opinions. Feel free to say what you feel (just keep it clean, on-topic, and abuse-free ;) ). Thanks!

buddha: I just made the icon. The sig I\'ve had for a while. Glad you like them. :D

Of course, once there\'s nothing further to discuss. I want to prevent this from becoming a general outlet for personal complaints. Some people might see it that way. In general, I don\'t think the community would do this, but one or two people still requires the lock. ;)

meh. as far as i can tell all your locking  has been fair.  just  people who have asked  the same question, (why cant i get in game !) when there are lots of other threads like this and several threads answering this.  *shrugs*

Lock it, by all means. I mean, if somebody gets pissed they\'ll start a new b*tch thread anyway, right?

I think too much locking is silly, because we end up with hundreds of threads about the same thing. To truly avoid clutter, less locking is needed. That\'s my opinion anyway.

And on that note, I think I\'ll lock this baby up to prevent abuse. Thank you all for responding. As it stands now, I don\'t think I\'m going to be changing my policy much, due to your input. If you have any complaints, feel free to PM me as always. Thank you!
