I understand not wanting people to spend real money on in game items, but the fact is that its probably going to happen anyways.  Besides, if this item has no effect on gameplay (Weighs nothing, cannot be enchanted, and for the sake of making sure it shows just that they\'ve donated, make it so it cannot be given or sold), I don\'t see why not have it.  And maybe you could make it depend on how much you give.

I like the medallion idea.  And you could easily give a better-looking medallion for more money donated.

The key here is that it would have NO EFFECT WHATSOEVER on actual gameplay, and is PURELY cosmetic.  Most people won\'t pay money they don\'t have to if they don\'t get anything in return.

They should accept donations.  Donations would be used to pay for the servers, but those who don\'t donate won\'t be any less off than those who do (For example, they shouldn\'t be forced to use the \"Free Server\" or limited on the number of hours they can play per day).

But those who DO donate could be given something in the game that looks nice, but doesn\'t actually affect gameplay in any way.  For example, if houses are implemented, they could have some sort of sign in front of it.  Or maybe they could be given a pretty medallion.

Servers cost money.  Somehow, the creators will need to get money.  We\'ve already ruled out in-game advertisements, and ads on the web don\'t generate crap for income.  I think this donation system would work great.  Ask for donations, and then reward the donator with a small token that will just show other players \"I\'ve donated.\"

Hey everyone!  Just downloaded Planeshift.  Connected and there was no one online.  After walking around a bit, I figured out why.  Heh.  There\'s really nothing to do yet.

But I have faith!  I can see Planeshift becoming a great MMORPG.  I\'ve played 2 other MMORPGs: The Realm and Ragnarok Online.

The Realm was began in 1995 by Sierra Online, and within the past couple years was sold to Codemasters.  They want $50/year or $5/month to play.  It was fun, but got old.  I started in the first year, when it was nothing more than a graphical chat area (Like PS is now), but with combat that would crash the client 50% of the time.  Eventually evolved into a very large world with many types of creatures and spells, 3 races, and 4 classes.  It was a blast, but as I said, it got old.  The quests were lame, and the authors just kept promising good quests, but they never came.

Then I got into Ragnarok Online, which is created by Gravity, a company based in Korea.  The graphics made me think of Final Fantasy Tactics, but the fighting style more resembled the Secret of Mana.  Ragnarok was fun, but laggy, yet it was still free and in early beta stages.  Then on August 3rd, they took down the American servers saying they\'ll be down for 3 months so they can focus more on the Korean and Japan servers.  Its been just over 3 months and they haven\'t come back.

So I did a post to a newsgroup asking if anyone knew of any good MMORPGs that are free or have a free trial (Preferably one that was time-limited and not feature-limited) and they mentioned Planeshift.

I don\'t think I\'ll be playing Planeshift much right now, maybe just stopping in to see if anyone is online, and then maybe chat, but you bet I\'ll be watching the progress.

Have you guys considered starting a mailing list for when the game gets updated?

PS.  There\'s an origin for my name Redner.  I used to take a CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) class and one of my classmates always made a typo when typing the \"render\" command and would type \"redner\" so I decided to use that name in Medievia, a telnet-based MUD and now I use it whenever I need a Medieval name.  I always sign my posts with my real name, DJ.  On most other forums, I\'ll be \"Killrbyte\"
