was getting:
Error message: Uncompressing Planeshift Crystal Blue version 3.011....Extraction failed.

did the recommended:
1. Remove from your destination directory EVERYTHING other than art
2. Run the UPDATE installer.
3. Run the updater.
4. Remove pssound.* from Planeshift dir.

then started getting the black screen bug.  I did what was mentioned,  adding the following two lines to data/config/r3dopengl.cfg:
    Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_rectangle = false
    Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_NV_texture_rectangle = false

that still hasn\'t fixed the black screens.  Two files were mentioned but I can\'t seem to figure out what other file you were talking about.  Little help please?

thank you guys so much.  I was getting nowhere installing this thing.

Editted:  i found two more things to do, am not sure which fixed it.  I went into planeshift.cfg and deleted the commented out line at the top with imagelist.xml on it, and moved the releaselist.xml one to the top.  I was also told to add same line to psclient.cfg
the second thing i did was add the above lines about Video.OpenGL to psclient.cfg.  There did happen to have a few options mentioning Video.OpenGL in there, so I put it above these.  Seems to work now

I have been getting the same thing Platyna.  Have ever since I started the game.  The logs I have of cpu usage, show that Planeshift takes about half of my cpu up, and about 1/3 of the RAM (at 512M) at startup of the game.  Once I have been playing for about half an hour, it doubles at least, and eventually uses almost half the RAM.  If I close other processes, it eats up what they were using.

I suspect memory leaks.  I have just upgraded to over a Gig of RAM, will tell you if it does the same.  There is NO way this game should be using that much RAM up.

Maybe a defense proving prior use?

The main focus in the United States for some of the Linux companies to defend against some of the more bogus patents MS tried for and got here, is prior use.  I am not as familiar with linking as some here, but it isn\'t hard to find info on it in the net.  There are some patents that are legit, but some, such as the one which seems to be patenting tabbed browsing and can also be interpretted in several ways, such as multiple desktops, only got through because you can get a patent without much proof that no one else got it first.  Here, you have to prove you used it first if someone else has patented it already.  The patent office does absolutely nothing to research or make applicants prove they did it first.  You just apply, and get the form... It would be a lot better if there were a public waiting period of over a year, and ANYONE can contest it, and no one gets the patent until there is proof in the event of a contested patent.

In many cases, other companies used things way before MS tried to patent it.  General concensus is that no one is going to try to fix the patents, until MS tries to sue someone. Then, they are going to band together and prove prior use and back each other with legal defense funds.  I am not sure how well that will work.  Prior use is a good idea to look into though, because you can get the patent taken away.  Look at the first one for motor vehicles here.  Someone had a patent for decades, and had to put the plaque even on Ford cars at first that this other person had the patent on the motor.  Until someone went and proved that the guy never intended to nor built a motor, it was all theory, and when he did build one from his design, it didnt go more than a few miles and badly at that.

OS:  Mandriva 2005, Mandrake 10.2
Video card:  GeForce4 mx440
x.org 6.8.2 is installed
dont know my graphic drivers version, but is up to date and from NVidia

i have this in my PATH:
/usr/sbin/:/usr/bin/:/usr/local/bin/:/sbin/:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/lib/:/usr/local/
lib/:/usr/local/bin/:/usr/local/sbin/:/bin/:/usr/java/j2re1.4.2_07/bin/:/etc/X11R6/
bin/:/etc/:/home/xordaii/rar/:/usr/games/:/usr/lib/qt3/

(put in _ in wget to it will show up)
$ wget _http://snafu.rabidgeek.com/~malverian/misc/easy_planeshift.tar.gz
$ tar -zvxf easy_planeshift.tar.gz
$ cd easy_planeshift/
$ ./build -version

gets:  Version 0.6

$ ./build
moved the art and data files back
$ ./psrun updater -auto

$ ./psrun -debug psclient
opens a debugger, i guess, that i dont know how to use, so if it is needed,
dont know how to give outputs from that

$ ./psrun psclient
crashes with this output:

  psEngine initialized.
Creating psnetconnection 85f26d0!
./psrun: line 28:  5572 Segmentation fault      LD_LIBRARY_PATH=\"${BinDir}/cal3d/lib/:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH\" CRYSTAL=\"${BinDir}/crystalspace/lib/crystalspace\" CEL=\"${BinDir}/cel/lib/cel\" $Command

$ strace -ooutput.txt ./psrun psclient
is output here:  http://www.rafb.net/paste/results/3pfPmU98.html
if you look toward the bottom, it says file not found for:
/usr/share/locale/en/LC_MESSAGES/libc.mo

I dont know if this helps, but there is one file in that directory, and it is
SYS_LC_MESSAGES

I had it running earlier, with 0.5 scripts, but only twice and stopped, i dont know what happened,
and now just gets this output and result everytime, starts the progress bar on the bottom of
the splashscreen, and stops in the middle of starting.

if you do this:
rpm -qa|grep automake
usually automake 1.4 is installed by default

you can always uninstall 1.4 and all others installed, and install automake 1.8 rpm

if you do this, you won\'t have the messed up /etc/alternatives link, I checked, I use Mandriva (Mandrake 10.2).

i dont know how to fix the autoconf problem, since both versions have to be installed for 2.5 to work... it depends on the other version.
I will try to put the export WANT_AUTOCONF_2_5=1 in and see what happens.

for others, if you followed the tutorials before trying the scripts, try to unset the 4 variables they have you set, log out, and log back in.

no hon not the swarm, change modes.  doesnt have anything to do with bandwidth.  it is in preferences.

Tools->Options
in the tab that opens, look toward the bottom for
Queue-> Seeding
then you check the box that says
Use Super Seeding

You dont want to use that after a few more seeds are full, but at first is very essential.  It won\'t use up more bandwidth, will just block the rest of us and concentrate on one or two fast uploads.  Those people that end up getting the seeds, they need to keep it up for the rest of us, and we will get it from them faster.  After they are done getting theirs, you uncheck the super seeding box, and go back to seeding.

May i please suggest, that whomever is the client with the 100% seed, would you please switch it to super seed mode? Just until there are at least 2 or 3 full seeds out there.  Then everyone can use normal seeding, and it should be fine.  Until more than just one person has an entire seed though, we still will have a very slow download.

Platyna: It should be in all mirrors soon.

This sounds kind of confusing hon.  I think what we want, is this particular test file out, not the installer final version.  It sounds like we all are talking about two different subjects.  It would be nice for the final version to be on mirrors, and Bittorrent too, but I think they were talking about this version, the test run.

Iobule: sooner than six days (It will take 6 days at 520B/s).

I get that download speed too Platyna.  The point is, no one will post comments or be able to have an entire file to upload for testing to bittorrent, sooner than 6 days.  I confirmed the math, it really will take us that long to download it.  I think we will get people to test it before that if you cut off all downloads, then post it to a third party site like suggested, or contact one single person to bittorrent it, then post the bittorrent.  You could still host the bittorrent file itself, but wouldnt have the bandwidth issue of uploading the entire thing.  A bittorrent file to start a download is only 18kb, while this file is 276Mb, too.  The load of uploading it would be shared by whomever first downloaded it, and then the rest of us as it continues.  I would certainly be willing to seed it for a while once someone gets a bittorrent file made.  As it is, no one will get the file to test before next week.

Not trying to be rude hon, just trying to make the issue clearer.  We really do want to help test it.

I am not downloading either.  One thought though, if you do put out the bittorrent, make sure to call it test or something?  Revisions later need a different name, too, liike test2 test3.  That way when the official one is done, it won\'t have different bittorrents with the name in it... and we know we got the right version.
