Linux installer ready for tests.
« on: May 21, 2005, 09:46:55 pm »
It is available at http://planeshift.xpam.de/ anyway that mirror is
overloaded so may be slow, if you will have problems with download wait till
it will be available on other mirrors too. There is also an update available, for
those who has art from older relases of CB, at the site above.
It is a test relase, so if you will have any problems read:
Known/common problems with the Linux Installer
and:
How to report problems with the Linux Installer.

Good luck!

Great, thanks Platyna :D
And may I suggest DHT based BitTorrent to remove the pressure on the server?

It should be in all mirrors soon. I am not familiar with BT thing, so if someone
wishes to make it then feel free. I am now working on improving the build since
some people are reporting me weird segfaults. :(

Regards.

Thank you very much platyna.

Is there anyone who downloaded the game and is willing to put up a torrent?

I just stopped downloading because, if enough people stop, maybe someone will be able to download it sooner than six days (It will take 6 days at 520B/s).

I am not downloading either.  One thought though, if you do put out the bittorrent, make sure to call it test or something?  Revisions later need a different name, too, liike test2 test3.  That way when the official one is done, it won\'t have different bittorrents with the name in it... and we know we got the right version.

I\'ve got a lot of BitTorrent experience, and I can seed a torrent, but first I need the file. Can anyone use http://www.yousendit.com to send it to me? When I get it, I\'ll seed it and give you guys the info needed to download it here.
Send to dablade at gmail dot com

Yeah, actually, platanya, if you upload it to yousendit (or if anyone else does) it would be a much faster download. Yousendit only allows 25 downloads per file, but then I would reupload it and hopefully others would, too.

So then we could have the yousendit, bittorrent from dablade and hopefully the rest of the planeshift mirrors to download from.

Rest of the mirrors will have it soon. On this mirror there will be no BT since
PS is already consuming 50 mbit - there is a download mirror for Mac and
Windoze client as well and network load is, as you can see quite huge.
If anyone wants to share the file on BT - feel free, I bet all Linux users and PS
Team will be grateful for help. Anyway file will be available on other mirrors as
fast as I will contact Talad. BTW, if you are downloading the file now you have
to redownload it - I had to change it.

Regards.

I can set up a torrent, but I\'ll need the original file first. When do you expect the mirrors to have it?

Platyna: It should be in all mirrors soon.

This sounds kind of confusing hon.  I think what we want, is this particular test file out, not the installer final version.  It sounds like we all are talking about two different subjects.  It would be nice for the final version to be on mirrors, and Bittorrent too, but I think they were talking about this version, the test run.

Iobule: sooner than six days (It will take 6 days at 520B/s).

I get that download speed too Platyna.  The point is, no one will post comments or be able to have an entire file to upload for testing to bittorrent, sooner than 6 days.  I confirmed the math, it really will take us that long to download it.  I think we will get people to test it before that if you cut off all downloads, then post it to a third party site like suggested, or contact one single person to bittorrent it, then post the bittorrent.  You could still host the bittorrent file itself, but wouldnt have the bandwidth issue of uploading the entire thing.  A bittorrent file to start a download is only 18kb, while this file is 276Mb, too.  The load of uploading it would be shared by whomever first downloaded it, and then the rest of us as it continues.  I would certainly be willing to seed it for a while once someone gets a bittorrent file made.  As it is, no one will get the file to test before next week.

Not trying to be rude hon, just trying to make the issue clearer.  We really do want to help test it.

To be strict - there will be never a final version of the Linux Installer. There is
work on PS going all the time. So since the CVS repository is made public I am
testing it and if I will get a better results or some major bug fixes I will surely
change the installer unless the admins will have the other opinion about it.

I think the point EsRyn is trying to make is that at the current download rate it will take anyone 6 days of constant downloading to even try it. If I start downloading it now, by the time i get it installed it will most likely be out of date...

Difference meaning :Update -- Full package
« Reply #14 on: May 22, 2005, 05:04:34 pm »
Sorry for looking a little bit astonished.
But what is the reason for an updater if you need to download the full package of about 250 MB?.
It is true i have DSL, but really.
Any reason, why the package can be split e.g. in art, which remains probably lionger stable and some dynamic part, which can be upgraded easier ?

Bye the way, that the Linux version is not available yet is a pitty. Hope this get fixed soon.
Kind Regards
