General Discussion / Re: PS SkunkWorks Project 01
« on: November 23, 2010, 07:19:30 pm »
I come in, and read the forums once in a long while.
I don't believe that I have posted in over a year, perhaps two...

But for that vanishing chance, that a miracle may happen, I will speak again, of why I loved Planeshift so much, and for years made it my home.

And to answer the question of this topic, I will repeat what I have always felt was in the greatest need of change.

When I came to PS, almost nothing worked.
Kill rats, loot rats, sell parts, buy things and training, repeat...

And yet, that time, before most areas of the map were made, was the golden age, for me.

We, the players, were players in a theatrical sense.
We created our stories, and we lived them, changing course as we encountered the stories of others, colliding, rebounding, orbiting, and inspiring each other.

There is no content, no art, no mechanic, no code that can hope to equal the experience of players involved so deeply with each other.

I know, that this is off track for many.
There may be some, in fact, for whom this is the last thing they want to hear.

But it is, I believe, the truth.

No matter what you build, no matter how much advertising you do, none of that matters in the slightest, if no one stays to play it.

And if no one wants to live there, all your work was for nothing.

This is what mainstream (zero RP) free gaming looks like, these days:  http://vindictus.nexon.net/

As you can see, the gap between PS content and the rest of the world, is widening.

PS cannot possibly compete, retain players and attract new players, on the strength of art or design, coding or mechanics.
Even normalizing the licensing, recruiting college students in gaming courses en masse, actually using player contributions, et cetera, might not be enough.

There was something that genuinely made PS special, though.

Our community of players, telling stories to each other...

People who were, absolutely, worth years of my life.

For me at least, the most most important change there could possibly be, has been the most difficult...

I spent years posting about it, and though I expect everyone to ignore the silly RP person, once again, I cannot resist another try, even so.

For there are still some names I know in here, and I wish for them the best there may be.

I propose, as guiding thought and principle:

To make Planeshift a place where storytellers want to live.

Favorite moments...

Romance in front of the cozy fire that used to be in Kada's Tavern, holding hands on rooftops...

Just being together, was an amazing joy.

And I genuinely fell in love.

Even more surprising, was that the story I lived, The Dark Lady Verrliit:  A Seer in Whom a Darkness Most Dangerous and Hungry Dwells, held far more truth in it than my real life did.

And writing for the first time in a quarter century, I read Dark Wisdom to a poetry gathering at Kada El's...

No one spoke after I finished, for so long, that I thought chat had stopped working again.

iMy voice has grown powerful..

Compelling.

With the imagination that I have...

Well, five operations is an awful lot.

I couldn't even speak.

I just kind of held my breath, and prayed.

I am so glad you made it through.

*Leaves a box of the finest catnip chox, all done up in bright paper and gold foil.*

Mind, you don't eat them all at once, Highness.  :)

General Discussion / Re: what would you consider a powerleveler?

And Verrliit, if it isn't a game, then why is it referred to as an MMORPG? Sure it is testers first players second and all that jazz, but the players second part says it is a game :)
Honey, don't ask me, ask the PS staff.

I just quoted what has been the official word, for all the years that I have lived here.

It just struck me as a great irony.

People are essentially RPing that PLing exists.

Everyone levels, until it takes more time and effort than it is worth to them.

It is supposed to be that way.

And some of the greatest RP artists that I have ever met, have maxed every combat skill, or magic, doggedly grinding away with almost inhuman resolve, hour after hour, day after day, for months and months, just so that their heroic or diabolic characters would be completely as advertised.

And PS is a "Pre-Alpha Demo".

It is officially and emphatically NOT a game.

The PS staff repeatedly call upon us to be "testers first, and players second."

And nearly the only things that there are to test, are rudimentary leveling and quests...

So you see, although there is an occasional wannabe now and then, there really isn't any such thing, as a powerleveler in PS.

Like so many other things, we only have the name.

It has not been implemented yet.

Karyuu has lived in these forums, for years.

I sincerely wonder where she found time to sleep.

Too often, in disagreement, we had unkind words, one for the other.

But even in the heat of anger, she saw where I made sense, and had the grace, through gritted teeth, to let me know I had been helpful.

Far more than any change to code or play could be, this is the end of an era.

Her voice has been the fundamental note of all that post in here.

And at least to me, it feels, in some strange way, as if I have gone deaf.

I know we may still disagree, and perhaps never be friends.

But even so, I hope that she will read this, and be touched by what I say.

For though we disagree...

She has my respect.

Server Status / Re: SERVER DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE

Quote
From Fragnetics 2 August 2007

    * Fragnetics is proud to be associated with this year's World Cyber Games Singapore National Finals and Asian Championship. For the coming 4 days, our team is handling the broadcast of the live video feed directly from Suntec City.
    * In the past two weeks, we have expanded the scope of our collaboration with Starhub and increased our bandwidth at the Equinix data centre. As part of this upgrade, we will be migrating our game servers from Qala data centre over to Equinix in the coming weeks.

This transfer of all game servers to another physical location, would certainly make our downtime understandable.

Having participated in such things, I sincerely hope that there is at least one complete backup of the server, somewhere outside of Fragnetics.

Just in case...

End of the world?

I don't see what all the fuss is about.

If you have seen one, you have seen them all...  Link

In other related news, former forum member Datruth, was unanimously selected as being Talad's successor.  Arch rival, but deep down secret admirer, Karyuu, had this to say when asked about the turn of the events:  "Ah heck, I don't mind one bit.  I'm going to work for Blizzard now.  We'll get this Universe of Starcraft MMORPG into beta testing yet."

Awwww, you're nasty Neko. I can bet you a million pounds that Datruth wont see the funny side of this lol.

Take the bet, Neko.

I will get in touch with Datruth, and we can split the money.

I think some apologies are in order here!

I agree, but I doubt the villains in question have the necessary humility.

Humiliate them, then.

You know you want to.  :)

When the whole of the Yliakum stalactite is made available, these barriers probably will not be needed anymore and physical barriers will be there instead. My guess as to what these will look like, well go to the Bronze Doors Region sector map and look at the imposing high rockface that the access way to the Fortress is carved into.

Well...

Don't count on that rockface being impossible to climb, once climbing becomes possible.  :)

Despite the repeated evidence that we have a dyslexic coder, I think the Devs are bright enough to hide a cave or two up there, with goodies...

there will also be a monster 50 times more pwoerful then an ulbernaut called waffley, it is feared by all races, but really, it just wants a hug.

Actually, there is already a monster more powerful than the Ulber, that has killed more brave souls than any other.

You might be fast enough to /unstick when something invisible is killing you.

But when you least expect it, it willl return, pull you down without warning, and you will simply...

Die.

Children wail, and strong men weep, survivors curse with fear...

When time itself does seem to stop,

beware, the Horrible Lag is near.
