Linux Specific Issues / Re: I'm having trouble with segmentation faults
« on: December 23, 2009, 06:30:05 am »
Similiar problem for me. I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with 64bit client and Nvidia 8600 Graphics, configured with two monitors in twinview if it makes a difference. Planeshift version 5.0.  When i try to use pslaunch, and hit play, the launcher will disappear and reappear. So i try to hit play again, and it does it again, sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't. When i try to run psclient manually, here's what happens.

charims@charims-ubuntu:/opt/PlaneShift$ ./psclient
Your configuration files are in... /home/charims/.PlaneShift

crystalspace.pluginmgr.loadplugin:
  could not load plugin 'crystalspace.sndsys.renderer.null'
Segmentation fault

This happens probably about four fifths of the time. Whereas a fifth of the time the client starts up and I can play.

Guilds Forum / [Guild] New Arkhia

High Council: Charims, Shadowcast

Guild Goal: Modeled after the city of Arkhia, New Arkhia aims to gather all the knowledge of Yliakum and build a library similar to that of the Halls of Knowledge.

New Arkhia is a diverse guild. We recruit all types of players as we aim to collect the knowledge from every aspect of Yliakum.

History

At the beginning of the fifth epoch; the time when Galeran Tarbius, inspired by Laanx, led the Xacha to Yliakum and constructed the iron temple consecrated to Laanx, a small group of people decided to worship neither Laanx nor Talad. They founded their own town on the first level to live together peacefully. The town soon became known as Arkhia and its inhabitants lived their lives without the influences of the gods. Soon the Arkhians realized that there is much knowledge spread among the inhabitants of Yliakum. They began to study the world around them, everything from its landscape to its people. The Arkhians became the must erudite scholars in all of Yliakum, but began to fear the loss of their knowledge. They feared that if an older generation died, the knowledge of this generation would disappear.
They decided to record their knowledge so that it might be preserved for future generations. The town decided that it should store these texts together. They established a library, where they hoped to collect all knowledge and preserve it for future generations. Because of the big halls where the shelves were located, they decided to call the library the Halls of Knowledge. The library grew very fast in the years that followed, and it had to be extended to several huge buildings in order to offer enough space for all the shelves where the books and manuscripts were stored. One could surely say it developed to the most important and largest library in all Yliakum.
The Halls of Knowledge still continued to grow and prosper, with it did Arkhia and its people. The Arkhians soon established themselves a form of government unseen before in Yliakum's history. Instead of being ruled by the rich or the powerful, they believed any citizen of Arkhia could potentially rule, but also strongly believed that only the most scholarly should be in charge. A small group that became known as the High Council was formed. Those elected to the council were the most erudite of the Halls' librarians and were elected for life. During the period of the First Great Council, the foundation for Arkhia's new form of government were laid out. They formed groups of advisers, established laws, and gave authority to the librarians of the Halls of Knowledge. In the laws passed came three of Akhia's most important laws: All people and races are equal in potential to gain knowledge and thus the potential to rule, All citizens have the civic duty to gather and record the knowledge of Yliakum for future generations, and, most importantly, All people of Yliakum have the right to the knowledge of the Halls. There was only to be one exception, and that was knowledge which could hurt the people of Yliakum, or the realm itself.

* * *

Both Laanx and Talad recognized the great potential and the possibilities of the library. Therefore, during the rule of the Second Great Council, Laanx devised a plan to gain influence over the library. She tried to convince the people of Arkhia to worship her, and, in return, she would offer them even more powerful knowledge which was not known yet to any living creature. To a city that committed themselves to learning, the proposal was very alluring, but came with a downside. She demanded that the knowledge of the Halls must not be shared with the followers of Talad, because Laanx was a bit jealous of the many people who followed Talad. With the collected knowledge in the Halls of Knowledge she would be able to wrest many people from Talad.

Talad did not rest either. As soon as he found out about Laanx plans, he became angry, because, like any god, he did not like the thought of losing followers. After a while he had an idea of how to undermine Laanx's plan. He made a similar offer to the Arkhians, hoping they would decide against Laanx.

It was a hard decision for the High Council. Should they give up there former beliefs and worship either Laanx or Talad? No matter how they would decide, one, if not both, of the gods would surely not like their decision. The were many controversial discussions, but, finally, they decided to decline both offers, because they still were firmly convinced that knowledge should be shared among all people no matter whom they worship.

Unfortunately, neither Talad nor Laanx were pleased with that decision. In their jealousy they suspected each other of sabotage. Nevertheless, both still hoped to be able to convince the Arkhians for their cause. All they needed to do was demonstrate the unique powers they gave their followers and the Arkhians would surely decide for one of them - either Laanx or Talad. But the ways of providence are strange sometimes, and after a while, the fierce competition which had begun among Talad's and Laanx's followers turned into a conflict, a kind of war. Unfortunately that conflict became centered in Arkhia, and soon became fierce.
It is not known who started it, but suddenly the town was on fire. The flames spread quite quickly, few tried to extinguish the fire; most were busy defending themselves. Many inhabitants tried to escape from the fire, and most of them were successful, but, unlike the people, buildings cannot flee. So it happened that the Halls of Knowledge caught fire. Of course, the librarians tried to save the books, pamphlets, and manuscripts from the flames, but the fire was quick, too quick. Only very few things were rescued as the Halls of Knowledge were covered in thick smoke. As the smoke vanished and the conflict briefly subsided, only ruins, rubble, and ash could be seen were the city once stood. The most important item to the Arkhians, which the fire did not destroy, was the Book of Radiant Fate, but it soon went missing.

A deep feeling of sadness came over Laanx and Talad when they saw what had happened. They were shocked at how this could happen. They immediately urged their followers to stop the fight, because it was useless now that the Halls of Knowledge were destroyed. After that the people in Yliakum began again to live together peacefully, and many years passed by, and many generations appeared and disappeared under the Azure Sun. Few remembered those days of the Halls of Knowledge.

 * * *

Through all of this, there still were the descendants of those who survived the terrible fire and the story of the tragic event of past days, which was passed down from generation to generation. Now, right in this moment some of them bind together. Modeled after their ancestors great city, they form a new entity. One that is dedicated to gathering the knowledge of Yliakum and and creating a library similar to that of the Halls of Knowledge. These people call themselves the New Arkhia.

Rules

To remain in good standing with the guild, one must follow these rules:

1. Abide by all Planeshift Rules and Policies

2. Help to ensure the integrity of the game.

3. Only post Original work, we will not accept work from other places!

4. Do NOT take our work and post it elsewhere!

5. Do NOT post or use Quest Guides or Information, you may post what NPC can start which quest, but that is all.

6. Do NOT post or use information which may upset the economy of the game.

7. Keep all information on the site and in game constructive and proper, we will not tolerate profanity, racism, sexism, or any other ism.

8. There is to be no Hazing of "Newbies" or the like, we are committed to helping others enter the realm, not making them leave.

9. Do NOT give access to other users to our website. Each user must have their own account.

10. The Knowledge in our Library is NOT free to the public. We are working on a plan to allow access through a Planeshift Certification program.

11. Keep the Role-Play going. There is NO excuse for not bracketing "[]" non-Role-playing text in game.

12. Our guild is based on respect, you must respect others.

13. All concurrent levels are equal to each other. In other words no chamber is more powerful than any other chamber, no hall more powerful than any other hall, nor any wing than another wing.

14. All new knowledge is given only to the player's respected hall, wing, or chamber leaders.

15. All policies of the player's respected chamber, hall, or wing are to be followed alongside these. These policies, unless conflicting with that of a higher level or the guild's policies, are enforced equally on all levels.

16. Know the policies. Ignorance of the policies is not an excuse.

Ranks

As follows is the guild rank system.

1) Seeker of Knowledge(Initiate)-These are the newest members of the guild who have not yet been a part of the guild long enough to join a Chamber.
2) Initiate of Thought(No Wing)-These are the members of the guild who are able to but have yet to join a Chamber
3) Keeper of Scrolls(Wing Page)-This is the lowest rank in a Chamber
4) Founder of Knowledge(Wing apprentice)-This rank is the last rank before taking part in New Arkhia government.
5) Disseminator of Knowledge(Wing keeper)-These members begin to take part in New Arkhia government. They assist the Wing Archivist in his/her/its duties.
6) Wing Archivist(Wing Master)-These members are those who are in charge of their respected Wing.
7) Initiate of Enlightenment(Hall Apprentice)- These member gain even more power in the government and assist the Luminaries of Enlightenment of their Hall
8) Luminary of Enlightenment (Hall Master)-These members are in charge of running their Hall. They have the most power of the non-Consul ranks.
9) High Consul of [Society, Combat, Magic] (High Council)- These members each are in charge of a Chamber. They also are in charge of running the guild as a whole.
10) Master Archivist of Wisdom- This is the most senior of the three Consuls. Beyond serving ceremonial duties in the High Council, he/she/it serves as the in-game guild leader.

In-Game, Ranks 1 and 2 are to be combined. they are called Initiate of Knowledge.

Hierarchy

The government of our guild is a complex oligarchy system. In charge of our guild are three members known collectively as the High Council. Each High Consul controls a Chamber. A Chamber is the broadest, and most powerful, division of knowledge. There are three total Chambers: the Chamber of Combat, the Chamber of Magic, and the Chamber of Society. Each Chamber is in charge of gathering knowledge of a different area of Yliakum, and each has its own focus of skills (see below for details). Each Chamber may have its own set of guidelines and rules to follow, as long as they obey Guild rules.

Each Chamber is also divided into several Halls. A Hall is a more focused division of Knowledge. Each Hall is led by a Luminary of Enlightenment, who reports directly to his/her/its High Consul. Each Hall may have it own set of guidelines and rules to follow, as long as they obey Chamber and Guild rules.

Each Hall is further divided up into several Wings. A Wing is the most focused, and least powerful, division of knowledge. All players will begin in a Wing when they reach Keeper of Scrolls. Each Wing is led by a Wing Archivist, who reports to his/her/its Hall superiors and High Consul. Each Wing may have its own set of guideline and rules to follow, as long as they obey Hall, Chamber, and Guild rules.

As a player ranks up he/she/it gains access to more knowledge stored within our library. After a player reaches Dissemenator of Knowledge, the player begins to take part in government of the guild. From this point on, a player gains more and more power as /he/she/it ranks up in the guild, rather than gaining more knowledge. Just as our ancestors had once made into law we also believe that All people and races are equal in potential to gain knowledge and thus the potential to rule.

I would like to thank everyone for their support. Our guild has not yet gone under, even despite our lengthy inactivity. We are currently working on some major reformations of the guild, leading toward a name change, and tweaking of our guild mission. We are prepared to alter our guild to find its nitch within the Planeshift community and Yliakum. Many of our guild systems will come under review, and recruiting and retention need definite changes. We would be glad for anyone who wishes to give ideas for name changes or otherwise, to please contact us here on this forum, or PM me. Again, Thank you to those of the Planeshift community who have supported us.

actually, there was no mass-recruiting involved. Members currently in the in-game guild:

1.Charims
2.Shadowcast
3.Gunneran(Shadowcasts Bro)
4.Narth(Charims Bro)
5.Gabor(Charims Bro)

I dont think that that is mass-recruiting, but if you think so, you can continue to hold your factless feelings and continue to slash my guild, I just wont have anything to do with it, PERIOD.

If you feel that was harsh, it was becuase i want to stop these accusations of mass-recruiting. We have been blamed for it since the beginning, even after reformation of our ways. And always by the same people.

Why, thankyou
This is actually an older guild, almost destroyed from the wipe, and didnt start very well the first time. So we figured it was time to make some changes.

The Credit is not mine though. I may be the Guild master, but the High council did just about everything, i am afraid i am not as competent in english as my high council :]

The History of our Guild
as it is told by the elders, written down by Thoronador, High Council Member of Radiant Fate

At the beginning of the fifth epoch, the time when Galeran Tarbius (inspired by Laanx) led the Xacha to Yliakum and the construction of the iron temple consecrated to Laanx began, a small group of people decided to worship neither Laanx nor Talad. The flames spread quite quickly, since no one even tried to extinguish the fire; everyone was busy to defend himself against the attackers. Many inhabitants tried to escape from the fire, and most of them were successful, but unlike the people buildings cannot flee. So it happend that the \"Halls of Knowledge\" caught fire. Of course, the librarians tried to save the books, pamphlets and manuscripts from the flames, but the fire was quick, too quick. Only very few things were rescued as the \"Halls of Knowledge\" were covered in thick smoke. As the smoke vanished, only ruins and ash were left.
A deep feeling of sadness came over Laanx and Talad when they saw what has happened. They were shocked how this could happen, and they immediately urged their followers to stop the fight, because it was useless now that the \"Halls of Knowledge\" were destroyed.
After that the people in Yliakum began again to live together peacefully, and many years passed by, and many generations appeared and disappeared under the Azure Sun. And nobody remembered those days of the \"Halls of Knowledge\". Really nobody? Well, there still were the descendants of those who survived the terrible fire, and the story of the tragic event of past days was passed on from generation to generation. Now, right in this moment some of them bind together. Their aim is to collect and keep all knowledge in order to found a library similar to the old one. These people are now known as \"Radiant Fate\".

Mission statement:

In its quest to protect the traditional knowledge passed on by the ancestors and gather knowledge of the new age, our guild members vow to uphold the laws of Yliakum and promote the spread of knowledge.

Alignment:

The objective of our Radiant Fate is to provide a source for both knowledge and wisdom. In such, the guild does neither support the cause of \"good\" nor will it support the cause of \"evil\". Hence Radiant fate is a neutral aligned guild.

Hierarchy and the system of subdivisions:

Hierarchy:
At the very top of our guild is the \"High Council\", a group which consists of ca. 3-5 members and the Guild Master. The council decides about all important issues of the guild.

Right below that council is a group which we refer to as \"The Council\'s advisors\". The task of this group is on the one hand to advise the Council in all of its decisions. On the other hand the advisors are members who are active in the PlaneShift forum (http://www.planeshift3d.com/wbboard/main.php) and stay in contact with other guilds. They are also responsible to keep the guild informed about important issues of PlaneShift. And, last but not least, they help to co-ordinate the subdivisions of our guild. Therefore at least one member of every subdivision will represent his/her subdivision within the Council\'s Advisors.

Maybe you are wondering what I mean by saying subdivisions. It\'s quite easy:

The guild members are grouped into several \"ways\" depending on where their main abilities are. Just to name a few examples we have a subdivision for mages, one for fighters, one for the stealth type characters, and so on. Every subdivision is headed by a leader who always knows what\'s going on in this subdivision and can report to the Council\'s Advisors. Within the subdivisions there are different ranks depending on how far the members advanced with their abilities and skills. The ranks may vary from division to division.

And finally there is the group of apprentices. These are the members who joined our guild recently and have not decided for one subdivision yet.

System of Ranks:

High Council

Council\'s Advisors

Various subdivisions (mages/ fighters/ rangers/ thieves/ .....)

Head of subdivision

...

Rank 3 (name of rank depends on subdivision)

Rank 2 (name of rank depends on subdivision)

Rank 1 (name of rank depends on subdivision)

Apprentice

System of subdivisions:
As already mentioned there are divisions according to the interests and abilities of our members.
However, everybody can collect every bit of knowledge he/she can find, no matter what subdivision he/she is in.
The mages could seek for knowledge mainly in the arcane arts, the explorers subdivision could focus on making maps of all important areas/ places, the fighters can practice the various combat skills with different types of weapons,... But the point is that no subdivision should be limited to a certain field of knowledge. A fighter character can also contribute his/her knowledge about magic, if he/she likes it. And going further a character can even change between the subdivisions, if the fields of interests changed. However, you should not change too often, since this could possibly result in a situation where nobody (except yourself) really knows to which division you belong.

Our current subdivisions are:

League of Fighters

Union of Rangers

Order of Mages

Historians? subdivision

Merchants

Craftsmen

Rules:
1. Respect your fellow players:
-The use of offensive or vulgar language is forbidden. Anyone using offensive language addressing another player will be reported to the High Council.
-Do not disparage or mistreat your subordinates. Although some of them may not have earned many privileges in our guild yet, they deserve our respect.
-Do not offend any other player, no matter what guild he/she belongs to.

2. Loyalty to our guild:
-Every action you take should be for the progress of the aims of our guild.
-It is not allowed to join another guild as member of Radiant Fate. Otherwise a conflict of interests could undermine the guild\'s goals.
-Be an active member and be online frequently. Check the forums regularly, pay special attention to the news and announcements.
-Contribute to our guild in any way you can.

3. Obey your leaders:
-Generally, this means obeying everyone who has a higher rank within the guild than you.
-If you get orders which are contrary to each other, obey those of the higher ranked members of your subdivision.
-Orders of members with higher rank are superior to those from members with lower rank.

4. Sovereignty of subdivisions:
-All subdivisions are equal; no subdivision is superior to another one. Only the Guild Master and the unanimous High Council can give orders that are valid for all subdivisions.
-Cooperation between the subdivisions is important for our guild, but only on equal terms. The subdivisions should work for each other, not against each other.

5. You are a representative of your guild:
-Be polite to others in game and on the public forums. Your actions do no longer only affect your reputation but also the reputation of your guild.
-Do not express hostility to guilds which are not enemies of your guild. Any form of verbal or physical assault to a member of such a guild will not be tolerated.

Joining:
Who\'s accepted?
All people who will participate follow the rules of the guild, and of Planeshift.

I understand where you are coming from karyuu, but many people sleep while i am online, i cant expect any of my members to be up at 3:00 AM just to join my guild, and not everyone has the flexibility of schedule that you may have.

That\'s why it should be an extended time, 20,000 may be a bit much, but i\'m willing to pay it, as long as i get my guild back.

But i\'m not going to pay it if there is a possibility that it is a waste of money.

Tell me, what if other members of the game wish to spite our guild, by pretending to be a member, since the wipe, then leaving the guild as soon as it forms, or as soon as i get offline, so that my guild will be wiped again.

We need to address these problems, they don\'t jsut go away. i would be confident with an hour or 2, others would rather a day, whatever time is decided, it definitely needs to be lenghthened.

I don\'t understand why there is still an argument about this, when it is clear that there is just not enough time. And form what iv\'e read, this seems to most people\'s opinions. I love PS, and i want my guild back. It\'s jsut that simple, but why not make it a little more RP.

I dont know about you, but form what iv\'e seen in game, cheating has already begun to create a guild...

TTYL,
Charims/Gebir, Guild master of Radiant Fate/ Those of Radiant Fate

I believe i speak for all of us thast something needed to be done to stop all the inactive, spamming/etc. guilds.

But i believe it was gone about the wrong way.

But when i see it from your point of view, i see why you did it the way you did.

I am willing to lay down my argument, as long as you increase the guild time to at least 1 hour.

I am not sure what everyone else thinks about this, but i think it is at least a little better.

I am sorry that i only seem to participate in these forums whenever there is anything that i feel is wrong...
I will work on that...

Maybe next time you could also give a week\'s notice or something, becuase i was the first one on the server after reboot, and i didnt even see the post after my client crashed \"Server not responding, it has most liekly crashed\" even though everyone else was still online, i logged back in, and my guild was gone...

Please forgive me for all the complaining, i will become more active in these forums.

i\'m not requesting my guild back, i\'m just saying, these rules are WAY TOO strict. Maybe you would be better off either making it 20,000, or 5min. either one. And i understand if you choose the second that you can keep recreating a guild withouth purpose, so limit guild creations to 1 by each character every day/week.

Instead of spending hard earned money that could serve a better purpose.
