Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: TALAD!
« on: July 05, 2006, 12:28:34 am »
Well, I'm refering to this specific part:

"When the Xacha began to build the temple to Laanx, Talad felt control of his people's hearts slipping away. Many of his people, curious and charmed by Galeran's power, began to workship Laanx and to forget what Talad had made for them. Talad retired to meditate and, with the power of his glyphs, to plan the most majestic fortress ever built, a building that would show the power of the glyphs and the strength of the stone, the element from which the Kran were created. After years of meditation, Talad created a tremendous wave of heat that melted the secular rock of the walls of the first level and molded this rock in the name of his chosen people. As it cooled, the wall formed a plethora of drawings and arabesques interspersed with shimmering crystals. These crystals still glow, illuminating the Temple with their light, showing the power of Talad."

But you're right after all, it doesn't mention exactly who build it, so if he would just enlight some people to do it, surely it would be the Kran. But he conceived it himself, I think that's clear. But if after the temple construction he molded the rock himself, as it clearly says, why not build the Temple himself? But either way, if it isn't mentioned, unless people are clarified about it, we all have to just assume things so they can make sense...

So, can we make things even clearer? I'll always enjoy this kind of discussion...  :D

General Discussion / Contributing to Yliakum's world concept
« on: July 04, 2006, 09:07:37 pm »
All right, this topic is to know how can we discuss more informations about the concept behind PlaneShift's world, without going into technical/programming concerns, trying to alter the concepts already made clear, and without confusing the discussion - wich is oriented to RP - with RP itself. Let me explain better...

I miss a lot of detailed information about Yliakum, it's inhabitants, it's history, it's races, it's geography, it's cultures. Sure, the basics are all there in the main site to anyone who wishes to read it, but I mean detailed information.  ;)

We all try to RP the best we can inside PS concepts, and a lot of people writes great stories in doing that, but one thing always get to me: what is reasonable and what is not? How can we know that our imagination is not being incoherent with the original concept when we creat a lot of details for our characters that are not in the settings page? What do we know, guess and imagine about all the places and people of Yliakum, the Stone Labyrinths, Kadaikos, and even the surface or the race's native planes?

I know that Yliakum's history is still not interely complete, but only defined in it's major aspects and events, and that's why I'm writing this: not to complain, but to suggest.

I think it would be good to our RP and to dev's work if we had a place to discuss Yliakum history, culture and geography. So we would know more about how other people (especially the devs) are imagining this wonderful world we share together, and what could and could not be out there. I refer to topics who would implement RP and understanding of the world, like:

History: to what great event the year counting refers to; important political events of the past; the stabilishment of different population on Yliakum's levels over the years; how much time do we speak of when we refer to different "Epochs"; different evolutions on religious thoughs; etc.

Geography: size of different populations and their distribution; possible locations of natural resources; what are the better-known places and the mysterious ones; natural difficulties different populations faces and how they react to them; etc.

Culture: different religious dogmas; different races habits and costumes; possible myths created during Yliakum's history or brough by other plains; scientific and magical achieves and difficulties; regional cultural differences; etc.

Of course these subjects are all spread over the forums, but I think they usually are mixed with other concerns than contributing to a more detailed description of PS world. Normally, people would talk to me that this kind of things should be in the RP section or on the wish list, but I strongly disagree. Why? Wish List: usually a place to discuss in-game implementations, what people would like to actually see with their eyes, and thecnical issues. These topics I mentioned above are confused with topics of "what would work best or not", rather than "how we imagine PS world". The RP section: people use this section of the forum to write interesting stories, and I agree that this contributes a LOT to the topics I've mentioned, but the actual RP and good storytelling are the major concerns there, not the "how we imagine PS world" thing.

I think it would be good to have a sub-forum for this, maybe in the RP section, since it's the most related to. The difference would be that it's not intended to do RP in there, nor to just post any story (of course, places' and habit's descriptions could always be told in story format, but not necessarily). There we could discuss about what would be more reasonable or not in PS world, imagine new places, describe better races specifications, and the devs team would know exactly when to say: "No, no, this won't do it. Why? Because we don't like it." I would be more than ok with that. I would be grateful, since it would mean I'd understand more about PS world. This sub-forum, of course, would NOT be meant to: try to change what's already defined by the devs team; imagine things incoherent with PS history's and race's descriptions; discuss technical details and possibilities for implementations; request new elements in-game or just in Yliakum just because they would be "cool"; adress to details the dev's wish to keep mysterious.

Personaly, I'd like to contribute more to PS through that, since I'm not a programmer, not a designer, nor a good storyteller. It happens that I am, in RL, a history teacher/student, and my imagination is much excited about descriptions and social discussions when I'm trying to picture a world, and not only by stories. I believe (or hope!) that others could feel the same as I do.

What does other people think of this? What's the possibility for such a sub-forum be created? If it's impossible  :( , then how can I contribute the way I just said I can do?

If people think my idea to be a reasonable one, I have at least one place imagined to elaborate a description and a LOT of topics that I would like to see people discussing more.  :D

Thank you for your patience.

I gues all of your discussion would be in the Wish list area.

Not exactly, since most of the discussion going on there is about in-game implementations, and this kind of subject eventually leads to the technical possibilities and ways of implementing things. I'll make a sugestion in the "Forum issues" to better clarify my idea to anyone interested. But you understood what I meant. Actually your reply just made me more eager to elaborate more on my last post.  ;)

Well your just going to have to wait.
As inca has said, it is Concept art.
You will see the final product in all its glory when the rest of us do, when the devs let us.

I'm not talking about actually "seeing" things implemented in game. I'm talking about more settings and conceptual information for roleplay. I often get myself into discussions created mainly because a lot of aspects of Yliakum could be more detailed. Not so we could know all the secrets or little agendas, nor to doesn't have to think by ourselves creating minor aspects of our characters lifes. I think that a lot of people discuss settings details, writes interesting stories based on the settings and no one cares to implement or deny that in the PlaneShift concept. So, each one of us roleplay based on the same world - that's true - but without being able to tell what's reasonable or not, sometimes. I've mentioned this before in a post about the way different races would grow older, and it took to no conclusion.

Unfortunately, everytime this kind of subject is brought up, people are more worried about "what will be implemented in the next client version" than about elaborating and discussing all the cultural/geographical/historical details that, in my opinion, would make PlaneShift world much richer and maybe give some constructive ideas to the devs.  :(

These days I was wondering myself: why isn't there a sub-forum dedicated to discuss concepts, rather than implementations? Then I though: mmmm.... maybe lack of interest....

PS: of course all of this wasn't directed to you, LARAGORN, nor to anyone specific.  ;)

Dear, Alvarez. This picture represents kran's Talad temple cause i drew it with this meaning

Wel, then my congratulations go to you!  :) It's great concept art coherent with the settings.

And even if it wasn't my work, krans as Talad's creatures couldn't have other temples beside the ones dedicated to Talad. Is it clear now?

Well, not so clear. First because I always though that Talad's temple, certainly inspired in Kran's nature, was made by Talad himself - like I said earlier. So it wouldn't be, in fact, made by Krans. But one thing you said called my attention: it isn't possible to exist Laanx Kran followers? I mean, according to Yliakum's history,

"When the Xacha began to build the temple to Laanx, Talad felt control of his people's hearts slipping away. Many of his people, curious and charmed by Galeran's power, began to workship Laanx and to forget what Talad had made for them."

And that was the reason why Talad decided to made a temple for him in the first place. Because some of his followers began to devote themselves to Laanx. So we could have several Krans worshipping Laanx instead of Talad. Just not the most of them.

Another thing to make myself more understandable. When I speak of temples, I think there are multiples temples. Two great ones, well known to all, consacrated to the two different gods. And others smaller, less important, but relevant to their followers in the areas they are located. I say this because it's clear in the settings that a lot of peoples already devoted themselfs - in different ways -to one of the two gods long before the construction of the two temples. So there must be a lot of sacred places in Yliakum, and probably in the Stone Labyrinths and most certainly in Kadaikos. But when I referred to "the" Temple(s), I meant those mentioned by the settings page, not "any" Talad temple - wich I believe the Kran must have a lot.

So, yes, you made things more clear. But I want more...

Isn't ronaldo meant to be obese so he did not playin the match where brazil lost

I think this "obese" thing is quite exagerated. People here in Brazil have all kind of jokes to that.  :D

But he was in the field against France. But I think I agree with you, "playing" would be a whole other thing than he did.

And to other posts: yes, Ronaldinho can play much better than he did. Wait! What am I saying? Brazil could have played much better!  X-/

I don't think that Kran's temple in the races' section should be the Talad temple mentioned in Yliakum's history. Reasons:

1) That's showing Kran art, and Talad temple was made by himself, so it would be unachievable by mortals.

2) Unless I didn't get the picture's proportions, I believe Talad's temple should be HUGE, I mean, he did it himself to show off his power - and to make fun with Laanx, we may add...  ;D

In the other hand, Talad's temple description is kinda similar with that concept art:

"Talad retired to meditate and, with the power of his glyphs, to plan the most majestic fortress ever built, a building that would show the power of the glyphs and the strength of the stone, the element from which the Kran were created."

So that temple could be, afterall, Talad's, but the drawing - wich is of course great, my congrat's to whoever made it - should show some proportion to create a better impact. Also, if it's "the" temple, than it surely shouldn't be in the Kran art section (maybe in a Kran dedicated art section...   :))

So, actually, I'm in doubt about this and would like someone to explain it, please.... Thank you in advance!

... Seems that those people were retrds

It's just nonsense and rude to "retarded" people who tried to help and inform you the way they could. And they did it very well and politely, by the way. Even if (and that isn't the case) they didn't help you at all, but just tried to, it would still be rude to call them "retardeds". I beg you, PLEASE, try the best to be polite to other people. Also, don't take this personal, consider this a suggestion to get all the information you'd like to ask. What I mean is: it will be best for EVERYBODY if we can just be respectful to others.

See? This is a way to desapprove something without being offensive.

General Discussion / Re: player Time zones
« on: July 03, 2006, 02:12:43 pm »
anyway, the time zone portugal is in is [GMT +1] like most of Europe except the country where Greenwi(t)ch is (GMT = greenwich mean time).

Portugal is in GMT, it's just in summer time right now, like a lot of other countries, so it's easy to get an information that right now Portugal is in GMT +1. Someone from Portugal, correct me if I'm wrong on this.

But you know, there IS a logic operating in the timezone system. Unless Portugal is an exception (wich is truly possible, since a lot of other countries are), it would make no sense in it being GMT+1, because this would mean Portugal is eastern then England. That's basic geography.

[EDIT]

This is where I found the information (I though it so unlogic that I had to find for myself, I just forgot to link it up in the post)

[EDIT]

Bad link, think it'll work properly now...

PS (portuguese readers only  :D) = Depois q o Brasil foi eliminado da copa (o q foi ridículo), vários de nós estamos torcendo por vcs! Além da nossa raiz ibérica, o Filipão continua sendo brasileiro!

 ;D

Translation: After Brazil's elimination on the world cup (wich was ridiculous), a lot of us are cheering for you! Besides our iberic root, Filipão [portuguese team coach] stills being brazilian!

General Discussion / Re: Llanx and Talad
« on: July 02, 2006, 07:35:22 pm »
3. Talad first created the Kran and Laanx created the lemurs afterwards ...

Laanx first created the Lemurs for both of them (before the "Division" between the two gods), and Talad created the Kran afterwards (and in doing so he disfigured Laanx).

4. I actually have no idea who named Hydlaa .. I'm guessing the first people who created the city.

That happened in the 3rd Epoch, by Talad, but the origin of the name traces back to Vodùl, and so it is quite mysterious:

"Talad gave up any hope to be reconciled with the old friend and, now alone, turned his thoughts to the people left in the town they had created. He called it "Hydlaa", the name of the most powerful glyph, that Vodùl had revealed to Laanx and that led Talad to ignore prudence to satisfy his pride."

So Hydlaa refers to the crystal creative energy used in both Lemurs' and Kran's creations.

6. & 7. At first sight you might say that Laanx is bad and Talad is good but I don't believe things can be seen that black and white. Neither are good or bad. Both simply are what their past experiences made of them. You could say that at the moment Laanx is bitter and more vengeful while Talad feels guilty for what happened and tends to interfere less. Both gods have the power to create and destroy though so it just depends on what they want to do.

Couldn't agree more...  :)

...i roamed all through the place where the guys who buy animal parts allegedly were located and still haven't found them...i like to find things on my own so haven't actively asked anyone in-game yet to direct me to them, yet it seems like the only way to find anything in this game cos nothing actually makes sense or is easy to find.

Think like this: can you imagine a world where you could just walk ramdomly and find anything you were suppose to be searching for? I mean, "the only way to find anything in" real life is through information that you get from others, even if it is a map or a guide, but not by "intuition". I can imagine all that talk about "but PS should not be like real life" coming and well, know what? I think that some reality factor in PS is extremely necessary, why? Because usually (but not always) people say this to justify lazyness to overcome difficulties, ignore the settings and common sense in roleplay or just childish manners.

i mean - why would there be merchants in an arena who want to buy rat tails off ya (...)

If you've cared to know what's the merchant in arena's activity you'd know the answer to that.

(...) as far as i know, reading the book is not yet..er.. possible... so im interested in how you interpret the Book of Names specifically, and if you could fill me in on something i may have missed in the game.

Hmmmmmm, actually I didn't know that, honestly.  :-[ I just assumed that it was known to Laanx's priests to provide guidance. I was inspired by some parts of Yliakum's history (http://www.planeshift.it/setting_history.html):

These quotations follow a chronological order in the history section:

About the Book of Names (in the 2nd Epoch):
"In her [Laanx's] exile, she wrote the Book of Names for, even if she was confused and her mind distraught, she did not forget her desire to be worshipped by the people."

About Laanx rule over Kadaiko's Lemurs (in the 3rd Epoch):
"For a period, Laanx ruled Kadaikos harshly, giving to the Lemurs inflexible laws and a strict hierarchy."

About the Laanx's Xacha followers (in the 5th Epoch):
"Some of them [the Xacha], circumvented extinction and went back to their ancient traditions, while the others spontaneously created a clergy and faith based on the Book of Names."

So, this last quotation led me to the conclusion that the Book of Names, have been written by Laanx herself/himself, would be the corestone for her/his laws and hierarchies given to her/his followers. But I return your own doubt to you: maybe I'm missing something I don't know, and you could also fill me in on that  :D Maybe an information wich I don't know/remember given by a NPC.

Besides that, if the Book of Names indeed can't be read (I don't mean implemented in game, wich is a different question) by Laanx's followers, they surely have religious codes, sacred texts and theological books by wich they organize their religion and discuss their faith. I think this is the opening to different religious aproaches to the same god, thus improving roleplaying the way I said before.

Shouldn't this discussion be moved to another forum? How can it be done?

Well, waiting for more opinions, as always.

PS: I just remembered something: the Book of Names is on Laanx Great Temple in Hydlaa, in the second floor. I believe that's a room for priests only, but still, the Book is accessible to mortals, them. Or... the Book is there, but unreadable or untouchable by mortals, it would be just a manifestation of Laanx's power. I still take the first option, as long as someone doesn't prove it inapropriate.

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: Religion
« on: June 30, 2006, 08:07:19 pm »
I suppose people could just make up their own religion with a story and beliefs and roleplay it.

Well, I understand that religions in Yliakum go way beyond the choice of a god to adore (or the choice to doesn't choose any). I mean, of course there is some kind of identity and familiarity between followers of the same god, but I think there are also multiple ways in wich one can show his respect/love/fear for his god. We can have different interpretations of Laanx's Book of Names and it's laws, for example, and different sects/religious groups who follow the same god could disagree in a lot of points but the essencial ones, becoming even enemies (any similarity with our own religions' histories is completely intentional  ;)). The same goes for Talad's or Black Flame's followers.

I find this subject really interesting and would like to see other people's views on this. For the last character I created, recently (Rorode Sowodel), I imagined a background in wich he comes from an isolated village organized by a specific sect of Laanx followers. This village also happens to be a lemur one, since I agree with what has been said - most Kran are Talad's followers and most Lemur's are Laanx's followers, but this is not a limitation, of course. This village would have all kind of specific rules based on their own interpretation of the Book of Names. I will probably develop this idea further in the rp forum, eventually.

 I think I went a little far here... well, more thoughs on religions?  :)
