Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game / Updater issues
« on: September 18, 2006, 12:46:54 am »
Good Day,

I ve been away from planeshift for a while, just checking back on it.

I run the updater (to update itself)  last night (56k modem means it takes a while to do anything), but now it tells me that the updater version is newer than the servers and wont let me update the gamefiles. Any thoughts is there another more'up to date' server?

THANKS!!

O.O

u mean dont want weapons to tranform a first grader into an invincible engine of destruction???? where is the fun???

we all know that in real world those who actually work hard and play by the rules never get anywhere.....
only luck (whether or not you are born into a multimillion dolla empire) makes a difference....

with this in mind current weapon system is very realistic..  >.<

interestingly enough two handed swords were not as slow or as heavy as they made out to be...

i think their weight would not exceed 7lbs.
and i really doubt that you could get well over 3 dagger strikes to one swing of a 2 hand swd
not to mention getting in range of that weapon in the first place.

but im sure these and many more balance issues will be sorted out at a later date  :)

LOL... they really ought to teach sarcasm as a subject in high schools around the world....(not everything said i meant to be taken literally ... sheesh use some imagination)    O.o

i was never saying that equipment is more important than training .... just that every factor counts in a battle.

Quote:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Basically, these rules are taken from all of the other games that I despised, impliment a newbie taking down me and reaping 50 duel points and I\'m quitting...I will not be taken down by a novice, and thats final >.>
------------------------------------------------------------------------

So y bother with combat system.... just compare the levels and if your level > opponents you win no fighting needed..

perhaps rethink why you want to play this game

If the knights weren\'t trained, they would fall off their horses and couldn\'t stand up due to the heavy armour. While the peasants would just jab them to death.

not really a good example....

if the knights werent trained they wouldnt be on the horse and in armour in the first place....
from memory suit of plate n a war horse was fairly pricey :)

yes training is very important, and so are you strenght, agility, endurance, level headness ect (these attributes are developed in training of course).

But if my memory serves me correct a short time before the battle of hastings, a viking (or danish , cant remember) army invaded england, and were defeated when caught off guard (they only had time to grab their swords n shields) by a pressing english army.
Despite being very tired the english won (so in this case equipment did play a decisive role in the battle).

But i think main point is that... An equally equipped person with better training will not ALWAYS win.
He may win a lot more often... of course (depanding of the difference in training).

Also we seem to have this romantic image of a 90yo master still beating the hell out of a bunch of 20yo gorrilas. Its a nice though... but in reality it just doeant happen.

But imo training >> equipment.. unless its  stix vs plate mail ;)

Yes.. it is well known that main difference between high and low quality weapons is their durability. Good quality steel will stay sharper longer.

I think bonuses to hit n dmg from weapons should be fairly negligible.

and ... a person should be able to take a few hits b4 going down, specially if they wearing armour.

NOT every hit is a clean hit ..... some are just a nick, and some loop heads.
Perhaps instead of fixed dmg. your skill/stat/weapon quality should increase the dmg potential.

EG.  a person does 1-30 dmg instead of 30 each hit...
and bonuses increase the upper dmg limit...

:)  the topic of combat is very difficult to discuss....
everyone has many different ideas.. and many different life experiences...

And discussing a combat between \"experienced\" , and \"unexperienced\" person can aslo be difficult.

Is the experienced guy a man who spent 20yrs of his life sword fighting, and the unexperienced guy just pickup a sword last night and wanted to see how to use it?
in this case outcome is pretty obvious...  unless our \'master\' was asleep at the time of the fight.

in many cases soldiers were called \"experienced\" or veteran after surviving just one battle. this clearly doesnt make them 100,000 times stronger than an \"unexperienced\" opponent.

From personal experience of some 17yrs of martial arts training (karate, kendo). A true begginer still has a small ( and i mean small) chance of defeating a well trained person. That chance is mostly dependent on his physical/mental attributes. A 6\"6\' 130 kg mountain of muscle, who happens to be agile as a cat, could easily pose a threat to even a well trained man of say 5\"11\' and 80kg. Simple physics will tell you that. (this refers to unarmed combat mostly).
presence of a weapon favours training more of course, but physical attributes should not be underestimated.

Simple example.... Germanic tribesman were more than a match for Roman legionares in 1 v 1 combat despite the Roman\'s superior training and technology, simply due to difference in strenght, size etc...

While i dont claim to have the answers, i think its something to think about.

Cheers :)

while all these ideas have merit...

the key to roleplaying is character diversity...

plus you dont want to totally wreck the game for people who just want to do some occasional hack slash with their friends..

an easy and logical (based on real life situation) way to achieve diversity is to increase the cost of training additional skills (while Carl lewis was a briliand sprinter, i dont think he was also a grea ping pong player, or a chess grand master).

Example (keep in mind this is just to explain the model not to give actual numbers)

u decide to be a swordsman.. so you learn sword..
this costs you a basic no of points to progress...
next skill you choose is blacksmith .. becouse you want to repair your own weapons..
this skill cost you say 50% more to learn..
Then u choose mmmm.... a body development skill..
this now costs you 2 times as much to train as your sword skill.. (becouse u chose to be a SWORdsman, not a body builder... so dont expect to be as developed as a guy whose primary skill is body dev.)

this type of system would creaty a diverse world of PC\'s
and hence encourage roleplaying...

a good party needs their mage specialist , thiev, healer etc..
or a blacksmith , herbalist...

and since each character wont be a combination of
Hercules, Mushashi Myamoto, Einstein, and a brain surgeon. a lot more team work will be involved.

yeah... weapons....

if a basic weapon like a sword does 2 dmg.... i dont think you should be able to find swd that does more than double it...

even D&D.. +5 long swd... is not even nearly close to being as overpowered as a 400 slash swd...

i mean...

i dont think anything more needs to be said...

Wish list / PL hard to suppress
« on: October 31, 2005, 04:29:05 am »
While true hard core Power Leveler will be hard to stop..i agree that specialization can work....

For example a simple way to stop people learning too many skills to really high levels is..

First skill you increase is a base cost...

Each subsequent skill you try to learn will cost more..
Just work out a formula that exponentially increases the cost of learning new skills.
Work out what limit you want.. and from that a simple formula can be derived for skill cost progression.

THis will reflect the REAL LIFE situation as HUMANS can only master sooooo many skills.. (einstein was a briliant physicist, decent musitian, but pretty much inept as a sportsman). tho much better at spelling than i am.

my bro and i play the game... we both have backgroung in math / physics... is the DEV team would like us to propose a simple system to try to reduce PL... we would be happy to try to work it out.

General Discussion / something to do
« on: October 24, 2005, 12:55:19 pm »
mmmm i agree that there is nothing to do apart from beating up on a monster that is not tough enough to kill you but gives anough loot to make it worth ur time.

needs purpose, perhaps each guild could have a town on their own :) and their purpose could be to take over the world ... (sounds childish but better than leveling up, and listening to people telling you how many ulbernauts they can kill in 30 secs).

maybe a penalty of some sort on dying could be implemented, random skill point loss (ie u lose some memories when u die).

while removing PK restrictions would suck for new players, it could be a job of the \"good guild\" to help them out, or remove the\"evil PK\'s\"

...
and pls pls change the combat system (reduce the dmg, and get rid off the overpowered weapons)

i mean basic wpn = 1.5-4dmg, then u find a sword that does 100 slash ... i mean its pretty silly..(its like finding a +100 swd in dnd)

i tihnk finding a weapon that does 2 times the base dmg should be amazing.. rest is ur skill.

it would stop monsters having 250,000 hp\'s too.

Cheers
