Linux Specific Issues / Re: Tweaking my Linux PlaneShift

I didn't see this post as trying to point out a problem, but rather ways to play PS on a limited system.  Maybe it's just me...

the fullbright switch seems to work for me...

./psclient -fullbright

But, I haven't left the DR in a week because of grass lag, so I can't say it works for sure.

Sorry, the warning was not for you (since you already had it working).  It was for people like me that might try it and then restart X only to find the ever so helpful commandline as the only way to use the computer.   :o

Of course, I know how to revert my xorg.conf to get the gui back up, but many do not and searching google for help from the command line isn't fun (more fun than booting up a windows box... but still).

p.s. I'm glad the driver worked out for you.

And just a little update, I did the ever popular /die and the graphics are faster than ever in the DR.  No screen freezes, gitters, nothing.  Just smooth operation.  So it must be the grass that is causing the ATI card to choke.

Warning - the new 8.41 ati driver is only for NEW ati cards.  Don't try with an older card (99% of us).

Yes, very, very, very slow.  I can't even move.  I await responses.

Linux Specific Issues / Re: Please help me choose a distro
« on: October 13, 2007, 11:06:00 am »
Go for OpenSuse 10.3.  It is BY FAR the best SuSE distro to date.  All of the problems I've had in the past have been fixed.  It is blazing fast compared to other installs I've tried.  Now I have never tried gentoo or slack so I can't say it is the fastest.  OpenOffice opens as soon as you press the button.  Press and BAM, there it is.   \\o//  The only problem I had with the install was the ati driver (I also have a box with an nvidia card which had no problems).  It tries to install the latest ati driver (which is only for HD cards) and of course that won't work (unless you have an HD card).  A quick google search will reveal the howto fix the driver issue.  Everything else, installed out of the box, including the biometric scanner.

There are two cds to download now (only one is needed) and the rest is installed via the online repositories.  The updater is extremely quick (compared to previous releases) but not nearly as quick as the updater in ubuntu (which is insanely awesome).

Ubuntu, Kunbuntu would be my second choice.

General Discussion / Re: Death in PS: Negligibility?
« on: August 07, 2007, 12:00:38 pm »
Please keep in mind that it is possible to die due to technical problems at the moment. In addition to crossing the DR you have to solve a quest? Sorry, this doesn't sound fair to me.

In the final version, technical problems would be scarce, at best.

You must be new here...

Yes, in pen and paper RPG, death is death of the character.  Granted I allow reincarnation/resurrection opportunities on occassion (say a main character dies that is central to the original plot).

In PS, I don't consider DR death to be "character death".  It simply isn't.  This explains why mobs reappear.

If you want to RP that your character actually died, that's fine too.  But I think it just makes more sense not to consider it true death in it's present form.

It means that since you're running up (the updater), you can't update it (it's in use).

Just carry on and play PS.  If you really, really want the new up, I'm sure you can get it, but it's not required to play the game.

I think you can trick it by copying "up" to some other name and editing the script "updater" to reference the new name.  Then up will update up.

Then change everything back.

Constrabus has a great way to fix "up" here:  http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=29311.0

I think most Americans would quit after a few minutes.  I think this test is more a determination test than a smarts test.

btw, 23 minutes.

512 MB is enough to run PS.  Don't run any program as root unless you want that program to have root access.  This mean no "sudo".  I'm not saying that this will fix anything, just that you do not want to run programs as root.  This is the major flaw with windows (or at least it was when I quit using it years ago).

You don't "have" to install as root.

Once you have set the +x permission, try running the install as a normal user.

Sure it won't install some of the icons and things, but it works beautifully for me from the command line.

So, I tried with -fullbright and it is beautiful as ever.  maybe I'll relight tonight and see if that fixes things.

Thanks for the advice.

UPDATE

The -relight did infact "fix" the black areas.  It is still very lagged however.  So I guess the two issues (black areas and lag) were coincidence and not related.

Fullbright on the other hand fixes it all.  Thank Dev for fullbright!

I have an ATI x1300 mobility and only in BD area I get the following plus a huge amount of lag:

I am running openSUSE 10.2.  I mostly ran -fullbright in the past.  I will try returning to fullbright mode and see if that helps.  I'm posting because I'm having the problem and I have an OK graphics card with current drivers.
