Linux Specific Issues / Re: Planeshift versus Compiz...
« on: October 23, 2007, 01:46:48 am »
Nice replies and some really useful information. Thank you. I will look into ways that I can get it working on my comp with ps (probably not. I only have an ati. sigh). But interesting all the same to hear your views. And also to have both sides of the argument too :) I know it's pointless effects, well, most of them, but everyone is really impressed with my setup anyhoo.  ;D

Right. Off to do a bit of research...  \\o//

Linux Specific Issues / Planeshift versus Compiz...
« on: October 22, 2007, 03:26:34 am »
As all of the linux users must know by now, playing PS with compiz is not possible because you cannot have direct rendering enabled.

What I was wondering is, what would be involved to get these to work together? As compiz is becoming a larger part of the linux scene, more and more people are using it so therefore, we are all having to log out and log back into a 'non-compiz/beryl' logon to play. I can imagine that some people will not want to do this everytime due to a being a hassle (albeit a small one).

Your views all?

Single Author Stories / Re: My first attempt at PS fantasy writing...
« on: September 23, 2007, 07:35:46 pm »
I was thinking of coming up with names, but I actually thought it was better leaving it like that as people who know PS inside out (yes, you know who you are! (and I envy you)) can fill in the correct names. I was hoping someone would give me a name (hint, hint) or two that I could use.

But thank you for your kind comments. This is the first fantasy narrative that I have written and it was actually very hard to write. I thought it would be as you have to get to the 'child' inside you to allow all the fantasy juices to flow. Hark at me! I'm an author! lol  \\o//

Neverhoo. Thank you for your comments though. I will add a little more sometime soon and see if I can come up with a half decent PS story.

I would like honest opinions as to the little 'snippet' I have written below. I know there are names missing, but I can never remember characters names. Anyhoo, here it is;

"oh, Laanx we pray to thee,
Give us serenity,
Give us love and kindness,
So that we may be blessed."

Farata was kneeling in front of his bed praying to Laanx as he had done for as long as he can remember.

The night was drawing in and soon it would be time for the sun to sleep and the moon to play. Once his prayers were finished, he slid under the covers and was asleep before the last of the stars was shining in the deep, dark sky.

The morning came and Farata awoke. He made his way into the kitchen to make his breakfast of an oat based meal, but stopped suddenly. On his way to the kitchen, he noticed that his front door was banging open and closed. Making his way to close the door, he looked around his abode to see if anything was missing. On reaching the door, he noticed a note has been pinned to it. Farata carefully removed the note and read it;

"Farata Gawata, you are hereby summoned by *someone in Laanx temple*. Here you will receive orders of what is expected of you."

"Strange," though Farata, "I've never known anyone to get a note this obscure before."

Farata has his breakfast, got dressed, donned his weaponry and headed towards the Laanx temple. He had entered the temple many times before, but this time there seemed to be an air of strangeness about it. An air of mystery almost. He was greeted by *someone else in Laanx temple* who led him to *someone in Laamx temple*.

Farata bowed and made his greeting. "You are well met, Farata Gawata." said *someone in Laanx temple*. "You are wondering why I have summoned you here in such a mysterious fashion."

"Yes, *someone in Laanx temple*, I am certainly at a loss as to why you requested my presence. I am, of course, honoured that whatever your need, I should have been the one that you chose."

*someone in Laanx temple* nods slowly at Farata's response. "You are here under my instruction on a most grave situation," he began, "there is a rumour going around that Hydlaa is on the brink of change. This change is not good for the people of Hydlaa and there is already talk of a mutiny against myself, *someone in Laanx temple*. Although I do not consider myself as the 'perfect leader', I do know that I am doing the best job I can."

Farata stood captivated by *someone in Laanx temple*'s speech. *someone in Laanx temple* was a good leader. He had a way of ensuring people listened to what he was saying.

"However," continued *someone in Laanx temple*, "there is also dark magic afoot. I don't know where it is focused or where it begins, but more and more creatures are making their way towards the entrance of the sewers. It is only a matter of time before they breach the opening and start coming into Hydlaa itself. Obviously, you can see that this will not do." *someone in Laanx temple* looked down at the floor and then directly into Farata's eyes, "you are to complete two missions, essentially just the one. You must defeat these creatures whenever they are a thread to you. They must not be allowed to breed or get into Hydlaa." A pause.

Farata waited for *someone in Laanx temple* to continue. He could see that this was hard for *someone in Laanx temple* to ask, so he just waited patiently until *someone in Laanx temple* continued.

"The second part of your quest is to find the source of this new found, and infernal, activity and put an end to it in any way you are able. *someone else in Laanx temple* will give you the 'defensive wind' glyph so that you may have at least some protection. He will also give you several healing potions. I see that you have your own weaponry and would not ask you to part with it so you will take your sword with you on your quest." Another pause.

"Now go and return when you have completed this quest." *someone in Laanx temple*'s voice wavered slightly, but Farata did not pick up on it. On his way out, *someone in Laanx temple* called after him. Pleaded him, almost. "Please. You 'must' succeed in this quest. All hope and the future of Hydlaa lie not with me now, but with you and the sword that you carry by your side."

Farata, looking over his shoulder towards *someone in Laanx temple* nodded and then made his way out. On receiving the glyph and potions, he made his way to the Magic Shop where he got the glyph instantly purified. "Everyone must know I'm on this quest!" thought Farata as he was ushered to the front of the queue in the shop and rushed out as quickly as possible.

"Now to begin my quest and not to let down *someone in Laanx temple* or Hydlaa town." commented Farata as he stood at the entrance of the sewers...

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: Times for 'downtime' and updates?
« on: September 18, 2007, 02:23:32 am »
I understand now. But what I don't understand is if UTC is really GMT, why did they come up with UTC and not just keep GMT? I know they say summer is 'supposed' to be GMT+1, but it's not. Not really. So I'm confused why they actually came up with it. I think it's a conspiracy...

Marawel, obviously I was not thinking of the times when the server goes down without anyone's knowledge, just when there is a scheduled downtime for updates or anything. :)

Aiken. I did look at the UTC explanation on the wiki, but I totally didn't understand it. I will have another look tomorrow as it may make more sense then, lol. But thank you both for your input. Nice to get some info from people in different parts of the globe :D

The Hydlaa Plaza / Times for 'downtime' and updates?
« on: September 18, 2007, 12:38:05 am »
I was just thinking, after being in the chatroom and several people wondering why the server was down, there is a lot of confusion about the times as PS has members all over the world.

So what I was wondering, and please, this is only a suggestion, but perhaps using 'Internet Time' (the @beats thing) to help people know exactly when the server is going down.

I know this won't help with the people who are new and don't really understand the Internet Time or even have heard of it, but I think a small 'Internet Time' clock on the website (which could be totally un-intrusive) would be a lot more helpful for both devs and members alike.

Your opinions all? Have you heard of Internet Time? (swatch.com if you haven't) Do you think it's a good idea? Bad idea? Wish the thing had never been invented? Have a better idea for doing this? I remember having this conversation with jose the last time I was here, but we never really got anywhere. lol. Sidetracked and all that. hehe.

Thank you both for the comments. I see what you mean by the 'perspective' effect. Unfortunately, it was from a picture I took on holiday so I might finding another texture to use and try getting a larger area to photograph. I have done a little search on the 'offset' effect that you have mentioned and I understand what needs to be done to make it tiled so I think I could get to the next stage in the process before posting my next again.

Thanks again :)

General Discussion / Are the devs trying too hard?
« on: September 15, 2007, 07:22:45 pm »
Over the past few days, (not including the forums as I have, honestly, not been paying too much attention) but in the chat room, I have noticed many people arguing over PS. Where has it come from and where is it going?

I would like to know your opinion. I don't want to start a flame war. Far from it. And if you are wanting to do this, then please, do not post here. What I would like to know is;

Do you think that the PS dev team are trying to stretch themselves beyong their original idea of PS to accommodate the many, many members that are currently playing the game? I can understand that when the devs (the people who started the project) first decided to go '3D' they had a specific 'route' where they were hoping PS would go. I feel that, because the devs are in fact human and do actually listen to their 'members' that they may (or may not have) lost sight of their original 'plan'.

So, really I would like to know x things.

1) Do you think the PS team are still on track for their original view of PS
2) Do you think that the PS team have changed their views enough to encompass the views of the members to develop PS
3) Do you think that the PS team have changed their views too much and lost track slightly of their original 'map' of where PS is going

As mentioned above, I do not want this post to turn into a flame war. If it does, the mod of the forum has instant permission to lock this thread, but I would like to know real and genuine, thoughtful responses to these questions so that it may help either the devs, or just members (or just for information and interest) to find out where PS is going. Where you hope it to go, or where you would wish it to go.

I must state that this has nothing to do with the devs or the other members. If the information is used by the devs or other members, then this is entirely down to the people that use the information. I have posted this off my own back and I am just interested in what people thing.

Hi all!

I'm not a graphic artist or anything like that, but I do try my best to help wherever possible, so I thought I would try and create a simple graphic to begin with and post it here so that I can get critiques on it. Any suggestions or critiques are helpful, even bad one's. As I said, I'm not a designer and I'm not entirely sure what is required, so I thought I would start with something simple and work from the responses that I get. So, please, do not hold back on your critisism (insults not withstanding, trust me. I'll ignore those).

So here is the graphic that I have initially worked on;

I don't have 5 things that I can think of, only one (the devs breath a sigh of relief). Not sure if there is anyone else that agrees, or whether it's just me, but here it is;

1 (and the only one (woo!))) Perhaps change the names of the magic to something simple and easy to remember and type. For example, /cast Burst Flame is too long to type (and I'm a typist!) and I had to look that one up! But /cast flame would be great! or /cast fire. Anything that would simplify the typing and remembering.

I know you can bring up the cast window and select from there, but that can become cumbersome if you are using text to fight monsters.

Thanks for listening. FoxII out.  ;D

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: help with updater
« on: August 21, 2007, 06:24:01 pm »
Yes, it is possible to play PS without running the updater, but it is recommended to do so. The updater can include bug fixes, changes to the code right through to graphics and sounds for the game.

What OS are you using? You could try logging out, back in again and then trying the updater again. If you get any further problems, post here with some more info. OS, etc.

I think the best suggestion, and I'm sure others will agree is to wander around and familiarize yourself with the surroundings. Talking to members in game (remember to use Role Play!) is a good way to gain help in starting. Try asking some NPC's (non playable characters) for quests. You can recognise these by their cyan names when you move your mouse over them. Just click on them and type /say May I have a quest? Sometimes they will have a quest and sometimes they don't, but you should be able to find one. For your troubles of completing the quests, you will be rewarded with either items, gias or both.

Hope that helps!
