Planeshift versus Compiz...
« on: October 22, 2007, 03:26:34 am »
As all of the linux users must know by now, playing PS with compiz is not possible because you cannot have direct rendering enabled.

What I was wondering is, what would be involved to get these to work together? As compiz is becoming a larger part of the linux scene, more and more people are using it so therefore, we are all having to log out and log back into a 'non-compiz/beryl' logon to play. I can imagine that some people will not want to do this everytime due to a being a hassle (albeit a small one).

I mostly only use one desktop so I have no use for all that jazz. To me it is "I wanna be just like Winblows which wants to be a Mac." Sure it looks kind of nice but how is it any more useful than without it. It is the same thing as with games, "We can't think of anything new to add so we will load up your video card so much you need a new one for the same functionality. The manufacturers will keep giving us new toys to play with so we win!"

I'm using aixgl and direct rendering works in compiz fusion.... PS plays just fine on my PC, no noticeable lag except recently with the lighter2 slowness bug.  And as for usability I find having it on is very good.  The ability to fling my mouse to one spot, see all the different tasks on that virtual desktop, click have it all rearrange nicely really improves my efficiency when multitasking.  I also tend to forget which desktop I left a particular program on, and the little preview isn't always enough so the desktop cube is a fun way of not having to cycle through slowly, I can just hit a button and fling the cube around until I see what I need.  Its really not that much faster but its nicer to look at :) I use the fire plugin to leave notes for my wife on my screen when I'm gone, the fire letters are hard to miss and better than a note on the fridge.  Wobbly windows are just ridiculous though ;).  The drop shadows on the other hand are not as they give a depth feeling for what order the windows on my desktop are in which is handy when I'm using multiple similar screens and am thinking back to which one based on the last time I had it with focus.  I use transparency in firefox and a text editor when doing coding tutorials since I don't have a multi monitor setup.  This is all positive from a usability standpoint.

i have an nvidia-card, hence driver 100.14.19. compiz-fusion runs flawlessly here, and actually i like it. features like focus trail provide some comfort for me. of course things like wobbly windows are sort of useless eyecandy..
as for ps (and also other purposes), i use a second screen with twinview. so i only would switch to compiz if i would know if or how it is possible to have a separate cube on each screen.
if that would be possible this would enhance playing and working once more quite a bit!

and btw: with compiz fusion icon you can switch between compiz and kwin without having to log out, but with just one click. not sure how is it with gnome or other desktops though.

Nice replies and some really useful information. Thank you. I will look into ways that I can get it working on my comp with ps (probably not. I only have an ati. sigh). But interesting all the same to hear your views. And also to have both sides of the argument too :) I know it's pointless effects, well, most of them, but everyone is really impressed with my setup anyhoo.  ;D

Right. Off to do a bit of research...  \\o//
