General Discussion / Re: Lost Roleplays and the Unexpected
« on: March 10, 2009, 02:12:33 am »
Yes.

An Enkidukai was spotted "selling dwarfs" by Harnquist's. Word spread like fire, and all the dwarfs of Yliakum forgot their differences and united together. The Enslaver was caught at Ojaveda gate and defeated to surrender.

Some 20 dwarfs were there, and even after the Enslaver left, RP was going on.

Nobody expected this, but it sure added fun to the game.

General Discussion / Re: Role Play and Game Mechanics
« on: February 22, 2009, 01:57:02 am »
An example:

1) RP supported by Mechanics:
Rakshak is trying to gather people in Hydlaa for an event. So Rakshak's character crosses a lot of gates and finally lands in Hydlaa plaza. In doing that, he used the keyboard or the mouse to move his char from another city to Hydlaa. This way, he used "mechanics" to support his roleplay event that's going to happen.

2) Same RP without mechanics:
How can Rakshak perform the same RP event in case there are no "mechanics"? Let's assume a pure text-based environment. Rakshak logs into the text environment, and says "I'm going to Hydlaa to start off my event". Then he types "Rakshak takes a long slumbering walk towards Hydlaa, beware of all dangers on the way, and finally lands in Hydlaa". Because there were no mechanics here, he didn't actually "move" his character, he just "pretended" to move. This is an example of RP without mechanics.

Obviously, when mechanics are given to you, it'll look stupid if you try to execute RP without mechanics that exist. For example. you may be standing in Ojaveda and trying to "RP" as if you're in Hydlaa - you will become a laughing stock.

(On a side note, notice that RP is highly subjective. It just depends on how, and how well, you execute it. Certain mechanics could be circumvented if you RP them well enough. I've noticed some very creative examples of RP without using any mechanics at all, even though mechanics existed that the characters could use.)

It'll be worthy to discuss this topic on phone or voice chat in IRC.

Have you played Lords of Magic? It's a very old game, but something that revived the then dying "turn based strategy games".

Planeshift is not a turn based game, it's rather real time.

Zanzibar's third criterion may be very difficult to satisfy for most games though.

Edit:

Just remembered, Zanzibar, you might want to try out "Shining Force"

I'm ignoring all the attempts at hijacking this thread, and let's try to focus on Rumblebelly's concern.

"If you want to start RPing again, try spending some time in the Hydlaa Tavern - it's usually the best place to get RPers talking".

Everything is real. Even non-real has "real" in it.

Good start! A question: Do you think it's possible to incorporate complex script languages like Hindi? It's spoken by almost a billion people, about 15% of world population.

A sample keyboard layout, I don't know if it helps; http://www.aksharamala.com/help/chm/Input%20Schemes/KBD/Devanagari/hindi.html

Complaint Department / [OOC: Roleplay or Scam?]
« on: January 04, 2009, 01:27:19 am »
[This entire post is OOC. I'm posting it here because I didn't know where else to post it

There was a scam today, in PlaneShift, in the name of "Xiosia" and "roleplay". Some people start a roleplay, drop all their items including armor, weapons, sacs, glyphs and even guildhouse keys. Then they all commit suicide, saying "Xiosia will make them semi-Gods after they come out of Death Realm". Apparently some veteran players were also there, so it all looks believable. As soon as all players reach death realm, one of the players has an alt ready at the suicide site, and he picks up everything and leaves.

If anybody asks you to use /die command during RP after dropping your items, do not do it. They may try to disguise this as "using a knife to die" but never use /die when you dropped your items on the ground. Report it to a GM instead.

Thanks for reading and have a pleasant time]

In-Game Roleplay Events / Re: A farewell gift from Ausuna
« on: January 02, 2009, 10:45:36 am »
The Prophets of Chaos are not called so without any reason. For they are a chaotic guild, and following any kind or "order" is a direct antithesis to their very being. Ikon is an icon of power for the Prophets of Chaos, as many would remember during a recent war ... and it's a pity such a great warrior chose you to experiment with his recent advancements in magical skills. You have my full support and empathy, and I am sure many others will find themselves in your shoes in the coming future, unfortunately.

"Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely"

Even as you have decided to leave, your honor and camaraderie is exhibited in your generosity of donation.

I would only hope that Ausuna wanders away... finds her peace ....

Rakshak bows to Ausuna Eleves, and makes way for her exit as a tear trickles down his cheek.

The Hydlaa Plaza / Re: Useful English Language Tool
« on: December 28, 2008, 07:06:49 am »
Hehe. I got 11/15. I'm not a native English speaker. English is my second language.

Ask Harnquist to take this test. I bet he can't answer a thing. "I'm sorry tabei but I did not understand that clearly. Can you please rephrase?"

I think what matters more is if you are able to express your ideas clearly, notwithstanding the grammar or even sentence structure. For example, I don't mind if Harnquist says "I can has steel" or "I got steel". For me both are same  ;D

However, it'd be great to see multilingual PS releases, there was already a thread about it somewhere.

Complaint Department / Re: mana regen is far too slow
« on: December 27, 2008, 01:56:56 am »
I think this thread rather belongs to the wishlist.... Unless the devs want mana to regenerate faster - to be deleted/locked in that case.

Mana is a form of mental energy, that can be channelized in the form of spells. Because it's a mental energy, it should refill better if you fall asleep. Sleep refreshes, isn't it?

At any rate, I thank the original poster "Gravemind" for taking his time to describe the problem. He should feel good for having posted here, shouldn't he?

philosophically your correct. IN reality your opinion has no merit

I feel sorry for your reality, then. Envy and jealousy are nasty things to have to live with.

Quote from: Under the moon
I am honestly finding it pathetic that people are quitting over this

Growing discontent over time
The distance between PS team and players/testers is widening. There are differences that are not settled even after years has elapsed in development.

Mismatch of expectations
If players are whining about something, the PS team needs to listen up, or risk losing them. Similarly, if the PS team apparently continues to take the same decisions players don't like, it means players are not able to get their points through. Maybe either they don't speak it at all, or they don't speak it well. One more possibility is thread locking and deletion, I'd not touch on that territory here.

This particular case
If Mouli has decided to raise an issue in the complaints department, there must be a reason for him to do so. Instead of trying to label him as a crybaby, there should be an honest attempt to read his mind. Why does he think he didn't receive his fair share? Why does he feel ignored because he doesn't live in America? Some of it is fairly easy to do - just find out all the "random events" that have happened so far and notice their timings. As simple as that.

Is someone going to do it?

Looking for solutions
While players should understand that if there are no developers or GMs, there would be no PS; the Developer+GM team should also understand that if there are no players there would be no PS. The onus lies on both of them.

( i hope it was for a RPer guild but not sure)
The house went to an RP guild, yes.

What is an RP guild? Aren't we all supposed to RP? Including the GMs, devs, testers, players et al? If you accept there are guilds that don't RP, then it's admission of defeat for PS project.

you want to see better and more gm events apply to the gm team stop making threads like this telling them you dont liike what they are doing till you have walked a month in their shoes. Threads like this will not help you get anything changed unless you help the team.

I am ready to walk into the shoes of a GM. Please make me GM for a month  \\o//

I personally did not take part in that event because 1) I am not happy with the way things are working, so I boycotted the gift-doling ceremony; and 2) having played PS for few years, I have begun to like the grinding. Perhaps my wish would have been to make things even harder, so at least I can enjoy few more years of grinding.

And yes, Christmas is for Americans, only Americans. Anybody who thinks I'm wrong please come to America and I'll show you. Mouli, despite the GMs and devs coming from around the world, somehow you've been missing such events because you are not in America. For years. Now please suggest to the dev/GM team how to fix it. Unless you make it in clear writing, nobody will understand.

Take home message: "GM/dev team should rotate the random events among different timezones"

Details (Because I know someone would say "you didn't ask properly, or didn't offer constructive suggestions, or your suggestions were not specific enough):
What was the starting time of last RP event? say xx GMT.
Designate next event as xx+6 GMT (6 is only an example, you could also use 4, 5 or 4.5*76-87 or whatever you like)
This way events will get relatively well-distributed among timezones. At least people can be a part of them without being up all night.
