I think you should go ahead and program in a backscratcher too. You know, in case I get an itch. You guys aren\'t busy, are you?

I followed Dawn for awhile. They were definately biting off more than they could chew with that one. I did like the idea of no spawning, and everything that came with it. But Vengence has a very good point that I never thought of. You never know what you would run into. On the other hand, if players wipe a place out, it becomes worthless. I\'m very interested in seeing your new idea on this.

Besides spawning, Dawn was going to allow players to modify that landscape. If they could think of  a really good way to keep the polycount down, that would be great. That was my biggest concern with that. But the possibilities were really cool.

The U.S. wanted to take out Sadam in the last war. The UN wouldn\'t let them. No matter what happens, the US is accused of doing too much or not enough. Now they don\'t even get to make their own decisions. The UN does it (or fails to), then the US is blamed.

The only thing the US is guilty of is holding \"World Championship\" sporting events without inviting the world. And that isn\'t really the US, its the sporting leagues marketers.

What is meant by \"complex\"? A good knowledge of linear algebra, trig and geometry is a must. But it really isn\'t complex. The trig is a bit tricky for me at times. Lots of theorms to memorize... but nothing too complex.

And for the love of all that is good, don\'t divide by zero.

Something I haven\'t heard mentioned, I just wonder why. The U.S. wanted to be a neutral nation at first. Unfortunatly, they were not given that chance. They tried to wait out WWI, but it became apparent that the free European nations needed help, and they couldn\'t just sit and watch them get destroyed. Then came WWII. Again, they didn\'t want to be a part of it. The same thing happened. They couldn\'t sit and be comfortable within their own borders as they would like. Only the Swiss will ever enjoy that luxury. Now the US has changed it\'s philosiphy. They think themselves the baby sitters  of the world, trying to put down wars before they begin. Now they are everywhere.  I\'m willing to bet the troops want nothing more than to just come home. But what happens if they don\'t? America can do no right in the eyes of the world. It used to be said that they were selfish, slow to lend aid and late for every war. Now it is said that they are warmongers. It is most of America\'s belief that if Sadam is allowed to go as he is, the consequences upon the world will be terrible. America is not willing to wait for Sadam to attack first. No one can speak well for Sadam. No one can say he is a good and honest man. He is cruel. He is a murderer. He is a threat. Has America the right to defend themselves?

Volden, I hope you don\'t think 10th grade is too late! lol. I didn\'t know I wanted to be a programmer at all until I got into college. I got my BA last year and I\'ve just recently decided to give gaming a shot, more as an on the side hobby for now, just to see if it goes somewhere. Anyway, the point is, it doesn\'t matter where you are. You always have time to make a course correction.

Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game /

Pyro,
I also have compiled the code, although I am just doing it on windows for now. I have not yet compiled the server on linux. I think I remember something in the license about not offering your planeshift server as a public service unless you are an official ps server. You can sign up for that on the home page. I may be wrong, though.

Are you using roads38.zip from the last release?

It matters how the arena boundries are set. If someone can enter the arena to fight, then just leave the boundries to escape the consequences, that sucks.  I was thinking that people could step in and work as a spotter, but I forgot that anyone in the arena would be in the conflict. I don\'t know what I was thinking there. Overall, I think arenas are ok, but they are a poor substitute for real pvp. Someone who is looking for pvp should just look for a different game.

All I\'m saying is, I don\'t think pvp and non-pvp can exist in the same game without affecting the other.

Here is my suggestion.

Either anyone can kill anyone else whenever or whereever they want (real life)

or

No one can kill anyone else.

Any other way will have people using loopholes. Even arenas offer loopholes, but they are minimal, and I would have no problem with them.

Sounds like you need a new book.

I\'d start with the red book. The OpenGL Programming Guide. You might not ever have to do any OpenGL, but it\'s important to know what is happening on the lower levels.
http://fly.cc.fer.hr/~unreal/theredbook/

Another good book is OpenGL Game Programming
http://www.bookpool.com/.x/4ojn5te9lr/sm/0761533303
(I always buy tech books from bookpool. Good Prices)
This will actually get into game programming topics, and ends with a first person 3d engine you can mess with. You may want to start with this one because it has some OpenGL basics. There is another book in this line called \"Programming Network Games\", or something close. I never got this one because the reviews say it starts from the beginning, teaches everything in DirectX, and barely touches networking in the end. If you are at the beginning, this may be a good choice.

As for tutorials, I suggest these
http://www.gametutorials.com/Tutorials/OpenGL/OpenGL_Pg1.htm
They are very good. A lot of concepts and basics are covered.

When you have these down, it\'s time for Crystal Space. I hope you recognize that by now. If not, there are better people here than me to tell you about it. I\'m just starting on Crystal Space, myself.

I see your point, but supposed roleplayers, i.e. non-pk participants, will be affected. If I wanted to play non-pk, and I suddenly couldn\'t talk to any of my friends just because some people I\'ve never met, and I personally don\'t care about, want to fight, I\'d be quite unhappy. The fact is, pk and non-pk don\'t mix. One will always be affected negatively by the other, whether it is territories becoming useless, or balancing issues. PK and non-pk don\'t belong in the same game. Even if two instances of the world are created (different servers), the rules of one type of game will affect the other - spell use, etc.
If anyone ever played on a supposed PK server on EQ, you know exactly what I mean.

cmhitman,
They do teach you what you need to know in c++ class, just not all of it. But what you need to learn from school, more than anything else, is how to learn to do something on your own. Don\'t just hang on what your professor says, read the text book yourself, get ahead of the class. Put in the extra time and effort. Make your assignments better than anyone elses. If you want to get into things like 3D engines, you have to be good. It isn\'t easy. Understand every principle, really understand it. There is a difference between understanding something and being able to compile it. And remember one more thing, I don\'t think anyone on the PlaneShift team has been doing this for less than 2 years. Don\'t look to far ahead of where you are. Concentrate on learning exactly what you are on at the moment, even if you don\'t see a use in it. I know you didn\'t ask for advice, but there it is, if you want it.

There are some pitfalls to this idea. This is a mmoRPG. Emphasis on role-playing game. It\'s the skill of the character that matters, not the skill of the player. In a real rpg, a 10th level character would in almost every case beat a 1st level character. It has nothing to do with the player. Everyone here thinks this would just be the greatest thing because *YOU* would always be the first level character beating the 10th. That may be true if you don\'t have a job or a life and decide to live exclusively in PlaneShift. If you do lead a healtly existence and allow the light of the sun to periodically grace your pasty white flesh, you will always lose to those who don\'t.

Having the skill of the character dependant upon the skill of the player just doesn\'t make sence. For example, a player has a 50th level fighter who dies. The player makes a new 1st level fighter. The 50th level fighter and the 1st level fighter, in the game world, have never met. They have never spoken. One never knew the other existed. Yet, this brand spanking new 1st level fighter has the skill of the 50th. Where did that come from? That isn\'t how it works. Characters need to be dependant only upon themselves. If they all run together, that kills roleplaying because they are all the same.

I\'m just using the old map, roads38. What does that name reference? author3.8 ?

One more question (yeah right)
Is there a place I can go to see what the current issues are that developers are working on? That isn\'t necissary. Now that I have everything compiled and running, I have a lot of code to learn :)
