For the same reason you would not have a dedicated ooc channel in game: limiting ooc talk as much as possible. Of course you can\'t stop anyone doing it (as much as you can\'t stop anyone using Skype or Teamspeak for that matter).

Having people a way to do a bit of ooc can save a lot of ooc outside it. Having played a number of MUDs and a few mmorpg I think that other channels of ooc communication are just as bad as having ooc in play and as much ruins role play.

Of course you can always not use irc (or instant messengers, or... you got the point ;)) but then it\'s the same of ignoring of shutting off the ooc channel if it existed in the game.

It occurs to me that maybe we see ooc as different things. I mean with \"ooc\" something out of character but still about the game. With the rest (your life, job, or friends) of course is none of my business :)

I vote against ooc chat done in irc, i wish to limit that to a minimum.

Of course you should not need to talk ooc in game but, hey, real life is different from ideal.

I rarely use ooc but trying to communicate ooc concept by converting them into in character speech is almost as bad for me that pure occ talk.

Well i don\'t know how it is done in 3D but usually when you do in 2D is simply a matter of adding a new dimension (and PS is not a real 3d problem because most character and monsters don\'t fly).

To make a long story short, is a matter of plotting several paths through obstacles and \"weight\" the difficulty taken by each choice, and choose the less. Speed should not be taken into account unless there are terrains who slow you down. Weighting the paths is easier done than said, because it\'s a matter of length (usually easy calculated by reducing the path to a fair number of straight segments) and time lost doing turns.

Note that all the math involved by using this method is integer math (unless you take in account simple conversions by using trigonometrics to compute segment lenghts but you can still use Pitagora\'s theorem for that ;))

I\'ve seen it done in a pacman-style game using the famous Dijkstra algorithm (those used to plot routes between addresses in internet space).

And if you finally get lost, since you are already in the DR, typing /die is really an option! ;)

I am wondering if something like a follow algorithm should be implemented no matter what for monster pursuing fleeing characters.

That is, now it\'s there but it\'s terrible! ;)

It took me about fifteen minutes to go out of DM the first time, without asking anything more that how to get out of the \"bottom\" of it in the advisory channel.

I\'m very suprised people can\'t get out of it...  :D

Are you sure you got everything installed correctly? Unless you\'re on a 64 bit system, libopenal.so.0 is included in my installation of PS, so it should work out of the box. Maybe if it\'s a 64bit OS it does not load it so you must provide it yourself or go 32bit with something like linux32.

Mandrive 2005 LE for now, with official NVIDIA drivers. Works like a charm for now. Well, when it does not dump core, that is  ;)

3) Are you sure that you have an AMD-64, and a matching AMD-64 Linux distribution?

Same question that sprung into my mind  :D

Linux Specific Issues / esd is no go
« on: January 10, 2006, 09:18:46 pm »
As far as i know, Teamspeak does not support esd and so locks the audio device both in read (recording, mike) and in write (reproducing) mode.

If you are running mandriva you can try to run both starting them from soundwrapper. Es:

prompt$ soundwrapper ./psclient &
prompt$ soundwrapper name_of_teamspeak_binary &

and see if something work. This usually fix output (e.g. sound being reproduced), don\'t know if it affects recording too.

If you are a lucky owner of one of the nice sound cards with 2 dsp devices you can configure teamspeak to use /dev/dsp1 instead of /dev/dsp0 and it should fix everything. This most often is the case of old creative stereo sound cards using es1371 driver.

ps: also make sure you get the right settings for your mixer, so that the input source is the microphone and not line in.

AMD64 3200+ (socket 732 or whatever is the old AMD64 socket)
ABIT KV8 (not the MAX3)
1GB Ram
2  x 160 GB HD
DVD
DVD+/-RW (Liteon)
Samsung 21.3\" LCD ( 214T ) <- this is the pricey thing ;)

No surprise PS work like a charm! :)

Did you install everything from the installer in this forum without using the installer on the site first? I got the same issue and resolved by using the installer linked here over an installation of that in the site (and applying the patch last).

I think it\'s a good idea. I\'m just a newbie in the game but i\'ve my share of experience with linux and still installing and putting the beast to run was a difficult task...

The installer needs to do some checking for what i\'m reading (on my box it did just fine).

If you think it\'s worth i can help making a rpm for the major distro out there (i\'m using mandriva but unless you are checking dependencies very tightly rpms are quite the same all around).
