General Discussion / Re: Best place and time to find roleplaying?
« on: May 31, 2006, 08:29:17 am »
Maybe it is just me, but I think that Roleplay is what is done best in imagination after the fact. It could then be written as a story.
The game is just the skeleton of the characters life. You fill it out later.
Roleplay by text messages just seems so vacant. I know they call these MMORPG, but they would probably be better served calling them MMO -Character Development- G. Let your imagination make your character real. The you can edit out all the Spawn Camping, multiple messages as you try to get the syntax correct for quests, and AFK messages.
Otherwise it just seems too much like the 30 year old guy who had his mother make him a Firiona Vie costume to wear to the Lan Party. :woot:

I think that the most important thing here is for a new player to understand that the game is designed to teach you three things very early on.
1) The cities for some reason don't have maps signs or directions. This is explained by some as Role Playing. I understand this isn't a modern setting but very few towns that I know of require you to run around all over the place to find key areas. However maybe the merchants don't want to be bothered by custmers. If so Then I guess the whole thing makes sense.
2) you will die jumping from 10 feet in the air, then...
3) it will be very hard for you to find your way out of the death realm by yourself.
After about an hour into the game, you will have learned these and then you can learn the next most important thing. If something seems strange and not working right, look on the forums for known bugs. You will most likely find that your not doing something wrong, the game is.
Good luck.

Exiting the DR actually isn't that hard, it's mostly people being to hasty and missing things, sometimes because of the darkness. The DR path is quite linear. And if someone asks money for showing you the way out, I would petition him, especially if that person makes a habit of it. Of course there's no problem with it if it's properly roleplayed, that person being a guide of some sorts, but I don't think the person you encountered had RP purposes.
Quite linear? There is one  place that you have to jump off the path. And another where you have to do a blind jump, one that anywhere else is death again. I realize that the developers want to make death a miserable experience, but why can't they just have you run forward on a path for 40 minutes? Or have you type in the dictionary from a to c.
The best bet is to just hope that you can follow a person leaving then when they disappear, wait around and then watch the next guy and repeat.
