Linux Specific Issues / Re: HOWTO: compile linux version
« on: July 05, 2006, 11:08:32 am »
I hate irony.
I just came back to PS just over a week ago after having to put it off due to studies, it took me about three days to "fix" the problems with libc6 and assorted libraries, and as soon as I finish that, I'm informed that the server is down for an update!!   >:(

All that wouldn't be quite so bad, were it not for that fact that in the process of "fixing" the libraries, I compleaty brock my installation, so I can no longer compile. :@#\

Hopefully Xordan will take pity on those like me, and release the installer shortly. :(   If not, I may be able to get an Ubuntu CD from a friend on sunday, and I'll compleaty get rid of usless distro!  :'(

i'll come back if someone will tell me when the other versions come out and seed for you...

btw, can anyone tell me exactly what a hashfail is?  i have two

A hash fail is a "piece" (approximately 512kb, or 1MB in this case I'd say), wish is the size of the data chunks that you recive.  If a hash fails on a piece, it means it's corrupt, and the bittorrent client discards the data, and redownloades it.  It's a cleaver setup to prevent  you downloading the entire file and then find it's corrupt.  ;D

A couple of fails is to be expected, and is nothing to worry about.  only once you start getting in excess or 50 or so peices do you need to worry.

Indeed.  Even though I also use Linux (waiting impatiently  :P ), Thats no reason not to appreciate all the hard work the Devs have done!!  \\o//

Everyone Cheer for the devs! Hip, hip.   \\o// \\o// \\o// \\o// \\o//

0%....
Anyone seen the Linux client around?  :D  I heard someone saw it come this way. ???

Seeing as how the winodows 0.3.015 client is released, I sure could go for a Linux version right about now...  ;D

Server Status / Re: random question about servers
« on: July 05, 2006, 03:00:19 am »
ahhhh, I see.

So in theory it is possible to compile the code, set-up a server running on Linux in VMware then setup 2 clients on other VMs, connect and have a conversation with myself, ummmm, for testing purposes :)

About the configure scripts, was I just not looking very hard then :) or do you just run it through GCC?  :sweatdrop:
and also, that means there are databases but just not advanced?

*edit*

My apologies, i just found the compilation guide. :)
JAM instead of make eh?

Ewwww JAM.  Now I remember why I never made .deb packages for Plane Shift.  :(

Make sure you post your results back here details of your experience though (success or failure).  I've got a spare PIII (actually I've got several... I'm a bit of a PC clepto  ;D ), and I'm curious if I could do in that way.  I don't know if using VMware for it is such a good Idea, beacuse it needs to run the full Linux OS, Mysql, and probably a lot more, and then you still need to have 512Mb or free Ram to run the client.

Let us know how it goes though.  ;)

General Discussion / Re: If your character was wiped...
« on: July 04, 2006, 10:13:12 am »
I guess everything is stored like on a MySQL database. A MySQL database's structure is very simple: it has a series of columns named "Name | skill1 | skill2 | str | etc." and every line would have "Timanel | 6,13 | 4,35 | 103 | etc.". So it would be very easy to empty the column skill1, skill2, str, etc. with a simple script or even a simple command ...

It may be easy to empty the stats, but it's not a good idea.  Imain starting with 0 strength (inability to do damage), 0 health (countinuious, and instantanious death), etc.  ;D

Besides, at the character creation process, you get a unique set of stats depending on what you spent your CP on.  Unless these initial stats can be reinstated into the character (and easily), It wouldn't probably be more likely that they'll just clear the data base, and let the players recreate their characters how they want.

We could say that Laanx came down and announced that everyone was getting far too greedy and to teach them a lesson he destroyed all their weapons, armor, money, etc. and made them forget all their combat knowledge.

Typical god-like character.  Someone messes up, and all of humanity is punished.  ;D   Not a bad Idea though.  It would fit in well considering how after the wipe, more players will come, they'll start being "bad", and there will be more wipes to come.  It even has some truth to it, since the more bugged items are used, exploits exploited, etc, the sooner a wipe will occur.

I supose in theory, if every player played nice, reported exploits, handed over bugged equiptment, limited PLingand never gained/used an unfair advantage against another player, a wipe would not be neccessary, hence we would be "pleasing the gods".  Of course this won't happen on an absolute scale, so we will "incure the rath of the gods", and the wipe will take place.  :)  Quite tidy.

BTW, what's wrong with gods rath being in the form of mist? No one seems to like the mist.  :(

EDIT:  The thought just occured to me, what would happen if we tried to have an amnesty day, where the dev's/GM's would demand the overly powerfull items/people with stats "so high" come forward, and if sufficient people did so, a wipe wouldn't be neccessary? :woot: ...or are the technical reasons for a wipe?

I'm just wondering how long people will go on without needing my involvement ;)
As long as they can.  ;D

Yes, i mean, news of the impending wipe is not asking for too much and it would help...but asking for them to not wipe the characters at all is a stretch...but something alot of peopel i think would support. I mean, i think it would be more work for them to wipe every tria, skill, and item off every character...but it would be very efficient. There would be no "Lost Name Crisis" and stories could continue to their natural end, and everyone would be happy campers.

They wouldn't go around and manually remove it from every character.  If they were to do it at all, it would be done via script.  That's why I was wondering if the information of the characters original creation was saved (all those bits and pieces you spend CP on).

Mass amnesia? Easy RP way out... everyone got sick and forgets who they were!

I don't think that would work so good... That would be more likely if they kept all items and stats, but lost every scrap of RP history. :P

I suggesed the black mist, because it besides being really cool to run into hydlaa and start shouting "The wipe is coming!", but then we could say that everyone had x years of experince striped from them by a misterious black fog.

The update should arrive in 1-2 days.

But... wasnt it 1 - 2 days Yesterday:(

Oh well, supose we should be appreciative.  Beats downloading the new client, only do find it crashes everytime you try to kill a mob, so you have to update it, then find it crashes everytime you pass a tree, then update it again, not to mention the other repeat posts from disgruntled users we'd get in the forums.  ;D

Sneaky. You (momentarily) avoided karyuu's axe by putting a missleading topic title in.  Rule #1 in the forums is "don't ask when".

Luckily, when I asked he said only one to twp more days, so were are almost there.  ;)

Ooo, we got an update - updated ETA! whoot!   :woot:

It's not so bad waiting a little longer... I'm supprising myself with my productivity in these last days.  Here's a chalenge for all those "I can't wait"'s:  See how much you can get done before the update is released, the only rule is, you need to try and get PS off your mind! It may sound impossible, but let me tell you, it's much easier than "waiting".  ;)

General Discussion / Re: Webhosting and Domain
« on: July 02, 2006, 09:37:18 am »
With www.dot.tk, by default you have ads, but you can very easily remove them (pop-up AND top frame) just in the control panel you get access to when you subscribe, so I say that www.dot.tk is really the best for free domains, You can also register several domains under the same account with them and have as many subdomains as you want for each domain.

Like I said, I had no previous experience.  ::)  I guess I'd better let my guild master know he can do that for our website.

Thanks necko,
I've been around for quite a while, but haven't been active for almost 4 months, since I was pretty deep in study.  I remember I had a text document open with 5 or 6 quotes in it that I wanted to address, but it's gone now.  Probobly wouldn't have been that informative anyway.  ;)

General Discussion / Re: Webhosting and Domain
« on: July 02, 2006, 08:26:33 am »
I only now of two free hosting agents, and neither are very good.  The first is a .tk domain (go to my.dot.tk ) which I haven't personally had any experience with, but they force an add frame at the top of the browser (so it's always there, even when you scroll down).  The other is a .co.nr domain (go to http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ ).  They are little better.  The claim "no forced adds".  There's only a forced animated .gif, which promotes .co.nr names.  ::)  they also don't give the option to have a DNS service (even a third party one), so you can't have subdomains etc.  The same people which do .co.nr, do .biz.ly (go to http://www.biz.ly/ ), which seem the best of all, but you need to have a high traffic site before they'll give you a free domain.

On top of that, I've come across a few free webhosting places that will give you a free domain name (.com, .org, etc) if you stay with them long enough (sorry, can't find link).

I still think you'd be better off though, to do what karyuu suggested an get a cheap domain name.  I've got one myself that I haven't used that much for only $12US.  I'd be carful with GoDaddy though, I've heard that if you go to register a domain, and cancel halfway though, they'll hold that domain for "premium" members, and you'll have to pay extra, or something... I could be worng.
