 . . . yay, please do.

Because it's just unfair that the two Kran in the graphics header in these-here boards both get to look cool carrying torches around whilst dungeon crawling, whilst we don't.

Is there any way of getting torches in-game?

It's fun to cruise about, exploring the many un-used corridors, passages and caves around and about the PlaneShift world . . . but some of these are dark.  Which makes you want to explore them *more* . . . but which is difficult, when you can't actually see what you'r doing, even with Dwarven vision.

Is there any way of getting your hands on a torch, or lantern, that you could fire up at these times?  If not, such could be a nifty quest reward.  And would look damn cool at night, when a few people are wandering about Harny's shack in Hydlaa, and someone strolls up with a lit torch . . .

So I guess I'm not saying 'where can I get a torch from' . . . but more, I'm saying 'hey devs - wink wink - wouldn't it be really cool in-game if we could run around with torches - wink wink . . . '

But then again, have never really been one for subtlety.

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: editing personal history
« on: August 16, 2006, 10:22:13 pm »
Hi there, Szyx.

Unfortunately, I don't think you're able to edit the basic, fundamental character history chosen through character development.  I'm thinking that Pebbles is alluding to changing your description text -- i.e. what people read when they 'look' at you in-game -- but this doesn't change factors such as your parents names, occupations etc.

Given that those choices were fundamental in your character creation, and in fact used/spent character creation points to give you your starting skills, they're sort of inherent in who your character is by now, anyways.

Also, Karyuu's Gameplay FAQ touches on this slightly:

Quote from: Gameplay FAQ
36.  I don't like my character creation choices, will you change my gender/race/etc?
The choices you have made for your character during the creation process are final – you can change them only by remaking your entire character. No developer or Game Master will make such changes for you.

 . . . hope this helps.

. . . and instead of begging, what about busking?

Given that there's often crowds of folk hanging around Harnquist's shed these days, especially when the old bugger is gone and folk are needing something to do, a good roleplayer could use storytelling IC to effectively 'busk' for loose tria and the likes.  I dunno, some story . . . about the saga of Talad and Laanx maybe, or about the exploits of a famous character . . . something done well enough to have people want to stop and listen, and then be appreciative enough to want to donate.  You could even run 'how to's' in a way, like, giving people a run-down on crafting, and/or blacksmithing.

And work as a team.  Have the storyteller standing on a barrel, talking . . . maybe ring-in a group of people to be an audience, so as to grab people's initial attention . . . and have another member asking for donations from the audience, and actually doing the trading/exchanging, so that the storyteller doesn't have to interupt their diatribe to do so . . .

. . . you could even make like a 'Hydlaa Plaza Theatre Troupe', that act out a famous battle . . . or even enact a scene from Shakespeare in-character.  /shout or /auction to announce the performance, wait for a sizeable crowd, then the small group of you act out your parts.  If such a spectacle was good enough, I'd be willing to donate something for the privilege of being involved . . . :)

General Discussion / Re: Bronze Doors Area

Hmmmn, sounds like someone needs to mount some sort of 'tourist session' to the BD area, to show all the newbie's around.

Just charge 50tria per person, you could make a pretty penny . . .

"[/shout] . . . and now, if I can draw your attention over to your right, you'll notice a large pair of double doors.  These are believed to lead into the stone labyrinths, and . . . "

20GMT, Saturday the 19th? Will 1-2 hours later be too late for some folks?

20:00GMT Saturday 19th = 08:00 Sunday 20th NZ time . . .

. . . eight in the morning?  On a Sunday?  In the middle of winter . . ?

The things I do for the PlaneShift community . . . :innocent:

I'm thinking a few hours later would probably be a little kinder to anyone around these parts . . . but, as ever, the good of the many out-weigh the good of the few . . .

. . . but if it eventuates at a time that works, I'm there.

I'd be keen to join in on the action, if for no other reason than to be one of the 40-odd people who, having received their Scavenger Hunt orders, run as fast as possible back to Hydlaa City . . .

 . . . . . . . . . . . . . stam - PEDE . . !!  :o

Although, living in the southern hemisphere n' all, I'm wondering what local time it'll be held at?  My character won't do his team any good if he's still sittin' by the side of the road drinking coffee when the dust clears . . .

Also, will participants know who their team-mates are before the event?  Having an open yet private channel of communication with your team would be a huge advantage, and so I could see resouceful teams looking to form a Guild so as to use /Guild-talk . . .

Newbie Help (Start Here) / Re: Skills that can/cannot be trained
« on: August 11, 2006, 02:43:18 am »
Well, many of the inactive/undetermined skills can be trained (at least the theoretical part) they are just not yet implemented.
Hmmmn, that raises a good point - skills that can be trained, but that don't have an in-game effect as yet.  Still, given that this whole exercise is one of applicability, I think I'll keep the lists primarily by skills that work (i.e. that are worth progressing in-game) and those that don't.

When I do merge the lists into two, I'll make it a point to note down what skills can be trained, even though they are not yet implemented.

Thanks for your input, Xirius . . !!

:)

*edit*

Blacksmithing, Sword Making, Shield Making, Knife Making -- Those can be trained and used since some days too.

General Discussion / Re: "Secret" Meetings.
« on: August 11, 2006, 01:12:00 am »
To me, it all comes down to role-playing.  If you're the kind of group/guild that *would* discuss something in public, then do so . . . as long as it's your characters nature to do so.

Likewise, if your individual character - newbie or not - is curious and/or nosey by nature, then why wouldn't they brazenly walk up to a group deep in personal conversation and insert themselves into it?  Why wouldn't they want to eavesdrop?  It it's what your character would do, then do it.  That's what role-playing *is*.

The only beans I would have with this situation is if the group/guild were to harass such an inquisitive character OOC.  That bites the big kumara.  As other posters have said, whilst most people wouldn't stop upon seeing a group of random strangers talking and simply say hello IRL, this is a game promoting role-playing, and thus promoting that sort of activity - even if for no other reason than for a newbie to 'see how others do it' - and so it happens.  But this is not license for the group to treat the inquisitive player rudely OOC.  If the group see an eavesdropper, and so get their Tuff Guy to roughly tell him or her to beat it, I don't see a problem with it . . . as long as the whole interaction is done in character.

In this way, there should be no need for a third-party chaperone to then have to tell a newbie finding themselves in such a situation why they've been shut out . . . because the role-playing of being asked to move along should do that.  If, in such a situation, such an inquisitive character gets harassed by a group of players and intimidated OOC, that's when GM's should be notified and those players reported, in my opinion.  But if it's done in character, I can't see anything wrong with it . . . because that's what would actually happen.

It's Body Development, not Enhancement ;)

 . . . ummmn . . .

Damn chosing all them 'leaves you feeling physical stronger at the expense of your intelligence' choices during character creation . . !!

The "Undetermined" section can just be merged with the inactive :}

. . . indeed, will plonk them all together once the initial sorting out is done.

Stop reading this and go here: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=31734.0  !

In this post it was revealed that some skills are not yet able to be trained, due to those skill not yet being implemented in-game, and that the Players Guide listing of Inactive Skills was even out-of-date.  Given that this could lead to problems and frustration in game, with new players losing faith in the game when they put effort into training a skill and not seeing any improvement of their character in-game, I thought I'd start this post to keep a tab on which skills were able to be trained, and which were not.

The following lists skills by 'trainability'.  If you know from in-game experience that a given skill either can be trained (i.e. have levelled-up a skill, and have seen actual effects from doing so in-game), or if you know for a certainty that a given skill is still inactive, post here and I'll edit this first post accordingly, to keep the list up to date.

:)

Jolly good.  :)

Answers and solutions to in-game puzzles and quests will never be posted in these forums . . . although I'm sure you're aware of that, having already read the Getting Started FAQ.

The easiest way of getting assistance with anything within the game is by doing so in-game, and in-character.  If you're lost, don't know where you are, don't know what you should be doing, or don't know how to do something . . . ask around in-character.  As the game is centered more around role-playing than it is about building uber-characters, people you meet in the game actually want opportunities to role play, and nothing shines a halo more than helping new-comers that don't know their way around yet.

Good luck with the game . . !!

:)
