I think these forums are the least friendly I\'ve ever stumbled upon.
Half the replies around here go along the lines of \"I\'ve been here longer/ I know better/ shut up/ go away/ we\'re better off without you\"

if you have nothing nice to say, don\'t say anything at all. It may be a cliche and childish fraze, but so are those replies.

btw the term pre-alpha is superfluous, and the entire characterization of the game along those lines is odd. Call it what it is: an ongoing development of an opensource game.

General Discussion / binding items
« on: April 04, 2004, 03:35:20 am »
Well with regaurd to people without much magic skill, I am under the impression that spells can effect other people than just the caster. Perhaps there should be NPC\'s in the cities selling such services or maybe real players will start providing such a service to meet market demand, in any case it should ofcourse be possible. Although I think in staying with the role playing goal of planeshift it should be a spell magicians can learn, thus a role they can play.

Call it insurance if you like but the reason I think it\'s a good idea is it gives objects life in a way and it creates a solution to the problem of (NOOOO I LOST MY UBER TOTALY SWEET LIGTNING FIRERING DEATH BLADE THAT I WILL NEVER EVER FIND AGAIN). It also gives a new dimension to the game in that a newbie would be able to wield an almighty powerfull item but not control it and thus most likely loose it again, whereas it would become a part of an almighty player.

Anyways it was just a thought. I\'m sure the dev team have thought of some other good system anyway.

General Discussion / just a thought

I think a good system regaurding item drops would be the ability (by magic) to bind items to the current owner of an item. The more powerfull and valuable the item (i\'m thinking some eqaution based on the items stats) the more will the item would have and thus the more complicated and powerfull the spell would have to be to be succesfull. Perhaps also the player stats should be a part of the eqaution, representing that a strong player\'s will would easialy assimilate a weak item. The spell should be permenant and perhaps could be undone by some spell, allowing items to be sold to a new owner. Thus owning and controlling an item are not the same thing.

So when you die items you control would travel with you to the death realm and items you don\'t control could be looted as soon as you die. I think this would be awesome because it would be a manifistation that there is no distinction between a player and the players items which will he has bent to his own agenda, even in death.

The ring in \"Lord of the rings\" was not my inspiration for this, I just thought of the simmilarities as i begun writing this line :)

I played Lineage for about a month as a mage and I admit one of the most satisfying aspects of the game was the ability to own dogs. It was based on your charisma with a max of 3 if i renember correctly (however having such a high char was unusual). Frankly I wouldn\'t have gotten nearly as far if I hadn\'t had the dog, this ofcourse has to do with how that game was weighted though (mages had a rough time starting out).

The way of obtaining a pet was a combination of hurting the untaimed dog (til it was almost dead) and feeding it. This was rather difficult untill your character was relatively well developed with a good deal of health. These \"taimers\" could then sell the dog as they pleased, which is how i got mine. Once you had a dog it had to feed every couple hours or it would run off, and when leaving the game it would go to a kennel where they would keep it for you til you logged on next time.

Anyways I\'m open to all kinds of pets/familiars/golems and such as they make the game a lot more enjoyable especialy for loners and weaker starting characters.

I don\'t understand this facination with guns. If you want to play a game with guns there are plenty of choices out there for you. This however is a fantasy rpg game ie. magic and elementary hack and slash weapons in some displaced world. The theme is not technology it is myth and frankly it will ruin the plot.

I\'m beginning to wonder how many of you kids already have an NRA membership.

This idea is great. Let\'s face it mages always have a rough time starting in rpg games. Rewards like this later on make it worth it. Besides i\'m sure an eqauly skilled warrior of sorts will be much stronger (or should be much stronger) than the creature the mage can turn in to. It was like this in lineage although i never played it long enough to try, looked like a lot of fun though.

Perhaps the exact reason factions have never worked is because players of the same faction weren\'t limmited in their communication with players of other factions. Perhaps this is exactly why the two idea\'s combined would make it interresting.

In regards to the so called \"personal crusade\". Mehallie I only gave you the same attitude I\'ve seen you deal out in several posts not to mention this one.

The fact remains that he was commenting on features of an up and coming mmorpg which is interresting to me because of the way blizzard decided to implement certain features.

An idea can be great but fail simply because it\'s implementation was poor. I haven\'t heard of another game with this languege system and frankly I think it\'s a good idea. Apparently to you an idea can be either right or wrong.

Secondly i\'m tired of people harrasing others on these boards just because they post something that\'s already been discussed before. Perhaps these people have something new to contribute or perhaps someone else might read it this time and have something new to contribute.

It\'s not like there\'s much to do in the game yet anyway. The least you could do is simply ignore the thread if it\'s uninterresting to you.

Um, no what he just described was world of warcraft, which seems pretty clear to me since the title is \"Cool ideas from World of Warcraft\". So in the sence of ridiculing his \"unoriginial\" idea\'s is a bit far fetched since he never claimed them as his own, wouldn\'t you say.

The languege barriers system he described is programmed, ie. you don\'t really have to learn anything. Get up to a certain amount of skill in that languege and then people of that race will automaticaly understand more and more of what you type to them. Personaly I think this sounds interresting and would promote rp\'ing because you are forced to stick with your race in the beginning. Whereas later on you can start forging alliances with creatures your race has never understood.

Faction rating, worked well in lineage i thought which is the only mmorpg game I\'ve ever played. I think it creates a more exciting world since there are area\'s you don\'t dare visit, unless pearhaps there was a way to win them over.....

boat transport i\'ll admit sounds really boring. It might be neat the first time but after that it\'s just a nusiance.

How about you actualy read what people write before you ridicule them next time around.

Our objective is to create a persistent world in a fantasy setting, in which every player will create his character and will be able to live with maximum realism.

Maybe you\'re just seeing what you want to see? I don\'t know it looks like a fantasy setting to me. Course it might be just me but when i think fantasy, I don\'t think guns. But yeah lord of the rings would have been SOOOO MUCH COOOLER if aragorn had a gun.

Yeah why would this ruin the plot it\'s just a weapon, you\'re probably right.

Whoever said this game was set in the medieval age? Personaly the polythesium of multiple gods fighting and the whole creation trend of the storyline reminds me a lot more of ancient times. Something like greece 400bc. or maybe rome. Ofcourse you can\'t draw any simularities with our worlds past but i\'m just saying the genneral trend of the storyline is that of an ancient age in my opinion. It\'s really a joke to throw in riffles and such just because \"hey, that\'d be soooo cool\", why? Is there no such thing as a good plot in games anymore?
