Development Team Blog / Re: Facing a new Era.

wow that' looks really good! Finally we'll get lamps which really shine from the inside!
And maybe we'll soon get better water as well?

I just wonder one thing, are you going to update the PlaneShift 3Ds Max Exporter to support those new maps?

Anyway thanks for this forum section, I'll watch it closely. :)

Development Deliberation / Psserver SetupConfigManager failed
« on: October 11, 2008, 10:06:53 am »
I've compiled Crystal Space and PlaneShift, everythings working so far, except the psserver.
When I try to start the server I get:
Code: [Select]
Error: csInitializer::SetupConfigManager failed!
Is your CRYSTAL enviroment variable set?

The enviroment variable is set exactly how it tells in the compiling-guide.
[Using Vista x64 and MSVC 8]

I have no clue what's causing that problem and I really hope someone can help me.

yeah that's pretty easy... there are several working ways how to get on that "mountain".

they certainly won't bring back climbing just because a part of the community wants that, this bugfix is a huge improvment and as far as I know it also helps to prevent NPC's getting in stuck. Looking back from two and a half years PS now I can say that it was always like that, some funny new bugs come... some old ones go. You can be pretty sure that there will be new bugs, maybe this release or the next one.. and there are also many gaps in those invisible walls around the maps.. you still can "explore" the world.  The places you can't reach anymore are now legends and you can tell tales about them.
So better see it as a chance for you to find new bugs! [Certainly don't forget to report them as well ;)]

Wish list / Re: Mining is dangerous ...
« on: December 05, 2007, 07:33:25 pm »
a great idea! I always hated mining because it's so boring, but with such dangerouse mines I could be really intresting. Apart from this it could be a real alternative to "killing monsters", at the moment there is no easy way to get pp without killing mobs..

You can try this yourself by shutting down a test server and then run through a portal before the connection times out.

An when you reconnect to the server that map is still loaded? If I understood you right, you want to create a new map and add just a portal to and existing map so that the player can walk there. And what's withe NPC's and Mob's? A map without any Npc's or mob's will be really boring.. And if it is really possible to add portals to an existig map this needs to be fixed by the devs, otherwise someone could simply relase an modded map of hydlaa with portals to all maps of yliakum... this would be counted as cheating then. So I don't see a real future for makeing a "pirate-map" ;).. anyway, if the community can create a map with the same quality as the actual ps maps are and it fits to the settings then the Dev's will take it I believe.. just my thoughts

Wish list / Re: Mobile?
« on: November 05, 2007, 02:32:44 pm »
yeah storage is not the problem, the problem is still the graphic card of these devices. And, correct me if I'm wrong, you're PDA doesn't have a graphic card with more than 16mb memory. For PS this is simply not enough..

Minimum Requirements for PS:
GeForce 2 or higher 3D graphics card (64MB of video memory at least)
1 Ghz CPU
512 MB RAM
1 GB free disk space

maybe in a few years you can run ps on such a device...

things change.., I believe in ten years there are devices similiar to the PDA's today with the power of today's desktop computers..
you can already buy devices in a similiar size to PDA's with a real windows or linux as OS. (So called "Ultra Mobile PC's") Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultra-Mobile_PC
So no change in ps is needed since it already suports windows. You just need an enought powerfull mobile device.

You know you could just make death permanent.  Then you wouldn't need to balance all that death stuff.  Provide a few means of resurrection (items, spells, etc) but if its not done in time your character is dead.  This eliminates a lot of problems, including explaining death itself, as well as - how brave is a person who is technically immortal anyways?  If someone really did lay down their life saving people from an Ulber for instance then it would actually mean something...
I would like such a system too. Death is Death. This would be perfect for rp and the world would be much more intresting.
