And I know that the original poster won't read this, but "rock people"? You've been around 18 months, and you don't Kran? I don't know why I'm bothering, but "Imagine, the elf-type, lizard-type, human-type and others all use the same model as the demon type race!" What the hell are you on about?

Pale,

The first paragraph of my review explained it: "Also note that this was written for an on-line game review site, so the target audience is for someone who has not played Planeshift before." Since the target audience of my review was for people who had not tried PS before, they would have no clue what a kran, klyros, dermorian, or lemur was.

Many have responded "Planeshift is a pre-alpha so quit asking for perfection." I know this, and noted that it is a pre-alpha in my review. However, on a site where people review games, they are reviews as the games are now... not how they might be someday.

Many responded along the lines of: "What sets Planeshift apart from other games is the community." How does one know that other games do not have similar "community?" I have found good community and bad community in Planeshift as well as many other games, forums, chat-rooms, user groups, etc.

Someone responded along the lines of "Well, something must have kept you here for 18 months." This is true. What kept me playing for so long was the hope that there would soon be improvements to magic, models, combat, monsters, weapon balance, skills. However in all that time, not a single model was added. Magic remained vastly underpowered, many spells do nothing. Potions have become less useful. Dueling has become less of a "sport." The weapon situation has gotten worse: When I joined, many used frosty, dark, fire, silverweave, iron. Now most anyone would use a crafted dagger or short sword because of the imbalance. Does anyone use a Darkweave, Spellweave, Enlightenment weapon, or "of the leader" or "of the hammer," etc? Nope. I hear complaints all the time about crafting. The arena is still packed shoulder to shoulder with monsters, yet most of the hills, forests, lakes, rivers and roads remain mostly barren of life. Dermorian, xacha, ylian, nolthrir, lemur, diaboli and ynnwn females still all use the same model. I stayed because I had hope of these things improving, but IMHO they did not.

Many told me to stop bashing the devs (something I did not do) because they're working really hard. But that fact that the devs are working hard on their own time does not change the quality of the game as it is today. The fact that it is free also does not change the quality of game, though I did mention that it was free at the beginning of my review. Telling people "If you don't like it, then join the team" assumes that everyone is a game programmer, which quite frankly is silly to assume.

The hostility some have shown in this thread is disappointing. Getting angry when someone points out weaknesses in a software project is the sort of reaction I would expect to see from a fundamentalist religious fanatic when someone questions something about their religion.

And hey... isn't this the "Complaints" thread?

Complaint Department / Review of Planeshift - list of complaints
« on: May 11, 2007, 07:28:46 am »
My recent review of Planeshift is below, and lists many of the reasons I have left the game. I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but hopefully some of it will be used constructively, and maybe lead to future improvements. Also note that this was written for an online game review site, so the target audience is for someone who has not played Planeshift before.

Pros:
Free, cross-platform

Cons:
Not improving, lame controls, combat, magic, models

Full user opinion
The idea of Planeshift is a good one, and it has potential... unfortunately the game lacks in so many areas that have not been addressed for well over a year.

Controls: 1 out of 10.
The controls are very clunky. Mouse control is unstable, so most people use use arrow keys to move around, ala Tomb Raider from too many years ago.

Models: 2 out of 10
There are over a dozen races... but only a few models, so the females in 7 races all use the same model! Imagine, the elf-type, lizard-type, human-type and others all use the same model as the demon type race!

Skins: 1 out of 10
There are no custom skins. Look around town... all dwarves look the same. All humans look the same. All human males even are stuck with the same beard. Rock-people look the same. The only difference is hair color. You could put on armor, which shows up on some races, but then you look exactly like all others wearing armor.

World: 3 out of 10
There is only one world, and it is tiny compared to other MMORPG games, but since there are usually only 70 to 250 players online at a time, it is big enough to not be crowded.

There are three main areas in the world: the main city of Hydlaa, the town of Ojaveda, and a big area called Bronze Door for some stupid reason that has couple of lakes, a mine inside a mountain, and a keep by a waterfall. However, almost no thought has gone into placement of monsters. Most areas in the hills and valleys are barren of life. In the huge section of Bronze Door, there is a total of only TWO monsters, two identical rogues standing next to each other. So one third of the world is practically devoid of monsters. However go into the main city into a building called the Arena, and you will find hundreds of monsters packed practically shoulder to shoulder. Where is the motivation to explore?

Monsters: 2 out of 10
There are only a few different monster models. Two monsters can be the same exact race, size and skin, but one will be as easy to kill as a rat, while the other will be almost impossible to kill. Monster animations are very primitive, and their AI is nonexistent. They just walk toward you slowly.

Animations: 1 out of 10
Animations are one of the worst things in this game. In fact, there are almost no animations. Even in combat, most characters just change stance, and don't even make a swinging motion with their weapons.

Sounds: 1 out of 10
There are almost no sounds in Planeshift other than some repetitive music. Monsters make no sounds. Weapons make no sounds. Combat is silent. No footsteps. Only a few magic spells make a "charging-up" sound as they are cast.

Weapons: 1 out of 10
There are only a handful of weapon classes. They are not balanced, so nearly everyone uses short swords or daggers. Only "noobies" ever use claymores, broadswords or most other blades. ALL shortswords look identical. ALL daggers look identical. There are dozens of different types of weapons that can be looted, like "Darkweave Dagger" or "Short Sword of Enlightenment." A few of these might boost a stat by 4 or 5 or 10 points... but no thought at all was put into these. First, the few that do boost only boost a tiny percentage (like a person with 200 strength might get boosted to 205... deal). Second, most cannot be equipped by weaker characters... the ones who would benefit most from a +5 to strength. Thirdly, all of these "special" weapons do far less damage than a "crafted" weapons. The result: everybody runs around with the same weapons: either crafted short swords, or crafted daggers. All the "special" weapons are useless.

Magic: 2 out of 10
Magic exists in Planeshift, but there are only 16 or so spells that can be learned. Of these, only 3 or 4 are even somewhat useful, and they are terribly underpowered and slow. Nobody uses magic in "real" combat. Also, magic often does not improve as you go up in level. Example: Spend months and ungodly amounts of money on training to use the healing spell to level 80... but you will only heal about 10% better than someone who is only level 1.

Potions: 1 out of 10
There are a few potions that can temporarily boost your stats, but these only boost one stat, and only 5 to 8 points at most, and they do not stack. So someone with a 200 strength can only boost to 205 at most, and the boost only lasts 2 or 3 minutes. Utterly useless.

Magic items: 1 out of 10
There are almost no magic items in Planeshift. There is a ring that can give you a "familiar," a small puppy-like animal, but it is useless and buggy. It will not fight, cannot be attacked, is not animated. The only thing it can do is follow you, and even that is buggy and only works half the time. Also it can only be summoned for about 5 minutes per day (real world 24 hours).

Quests: 2 out of 10
Quests are done by "talking" to NPCs. A handful of quests are slightly challenging or interesting, but the majority of them are just acts of frustration trying to guess the right phrases and spelling to get an NPC to answer you. 95% of NPC responses are "I don't understand you" or "Try speaking English." Sometimes saying something like "Please tell me about the holy scroll" will not work, but "about scroll" will work. I've even seen quests where you must misspell a word to get it to work!

Interaction: 2 out of 10
You cannot interact with the world. There are no doors that open or close. No carts or mounts or magic carpets. There are numerous flaws in the world where your toe can lodge, and you'll be stuck. There is an "unstick" command, but that often will not get you unstuck, nor will relogging. Sometimes your only option is to kill yourself.

Gamemasters: 2 out of 10
Gamemasters are, for the most part, the "police" of Planeshift. They rarely participate in any RPs, and on the rare occasions that they do, it is usually very boring, and people usually just participate with it to get a reward at the end (sometimes nothing, sometimes a few experience points, or once in a while a rare item).

I get the impression that most Gamemasters are young, as most lack any skills at conflict resolution, or stopping serious harassment. They are often quite rude and unhelpful. Example: A friend was trying to get to a major in-game event (a wedding). They traveled across the whole map, only to get their toe stuck between two small rocks (a bug) when she was almost there. She tried "unsticking" and relogging, but couldn't get out. When a GM was politely asked "Can you please move me from between these rocks?" The GM replied, "We don't do that anymore. You will have to kill yourself." She finally had to do this, and ended up missing the wedding.

Server: 2 out of 10
The game server is quite unstable at times. Often when the game server is up, the "npc server" will be down for hours or even days at a time. When this happens, all monsters become like statues.

Planeshift is a "pre-alpha playable demo," and this is a fitting description. Problems like I mentioned would be expected in a game in this stage, however almost all of these problems are in exactly the same stage as they were 18 months ago when I started playing. Back then it was pre-alpha, today it is a pre-alpha, and my guess is that next year it will still be a pre-alpha.

Completely unstable is completely different than being unable to run in fullscreen mode. I have had fullscreen working on PPC and Intel Macs over here. Sorry if you don't like me telling someone to shove off, but there are good and bad ways to write criticism.

Not all computers are the same. Just because full screen works on yours, doesn't mean it will work on everyone else's.

Am I missing something? I have been running my Mac client in full-screen mode since I started playing like a year or more ago. Don't tell me that someone spent all that time writing that post and didn't bother to check the setup program? WoW can have 'em...

Before you tell them to shove off to WoW, realize that their Mac might be different from yours. I've had no problems in the past on a G4 iBook, but on a new Intel MacBook, the PS client is completely unstable. Maybe his computer is different from yours.

Another unsatisfied 'customer'.

I feel very much the same as Peeg on this one.

And Roahn, Why bother even posting about this? Just because your a little annoyed about not being able to access the winch area, which is (I assume) the Devs just trying something new, maybe to actually learn something new and give us something new to aim for.

(and ive still not got access to the winch area.)

Idoru,

"Why bother posting this?" Because this is the Complain Department section.

I don't think you read my post, since I *did* give something to aim for by listing the things that could be changed to make Planeshift interesting.

Actually I'm not that annoyed about not being able to access the winch area. I've seen screenshots of it, and it doesn't look like it's worth the effort to walk around and look at some sci-fi-looking structures (what is that doing in a fantasy setting anyway?) and a handful of Hydlaa-type houses with doors that don't open. However, I know a lot of people that have spent weeks trying to get into this area only to find out they can't because of a bug, and have to create a new character and re-do a bunch of quests all over again just to get in.

Sounds like you should take a time-out and enjoy other games.

That is exactly what I have done, which was my point. Like most of the older players that I've known, I have moved on to other games that are not caught in a perpetually broken pre-alpha state.

Access to limited areas is not a problem to me personally, and yes, I've been locked out due to discarded quests. However, should the current trend continue, I can envision a Yliakum future in which more experienced players will be locked away in restricted areas, leaving future new players out. Is this a future we really want to see in Yliakum?

Honestly I think having a "restricted area" is one of the dumbest ideas the devs have done so far. That's one of the reasons I've only been logged in for about an hour in the past two weeks, instead of two or three hours a day like I used to play. The game hasn't significantly improved in the nearly year and a half that I've been playing.

There have been no new *useful* spells.
No new *useful* weapons.
Not a single new NPC model added.
Not a single new player model added.
The only new skins are for armor, and only for some of the models.
They did add crafting, but it's boring as hell, is quite buggy, requires ridiculous amounts of ore, and you can't craft axes.
Weapon repair was added... but it's just an nuisance and doesn't add enjoyment to the game.
Armor repair doesn't work.
There's a huge list of skills in the Stats section, but just like 16 months ago when I started, they don't work and/or can't be trained.
No game sounds except for spells. If you turn off the music, PS is pretty much silent.
No thieving skills.
The only real way to earn PP is through combat. Why does a miner have to kill monsters in order to train his mining?
Quests are still as broken and lame as before.
NPC "AI" is non-existent.
There is no logic to monster damage and experience. Example: in the arena, there is a rogue that a brand new character can easily kill. It gives 700 experience. Right next to it is an identical-looking rogue that is many times stronger, and is nearly impossible for a new character to kill. It only gives 80 experience. Why does the weak one give high experience while the strong one gives low experience?! Same thing with tefusang. One tefu gives 6000 experience, while one gives less than 100 experience, yet they look exactly the same and are the same size. I see poor noobies kill one monster, realize "hey I can kill a tefu easily!" then hit another one, and die in one hit.

In my opinion, Planeshift has stagnated, and what little development that is happening is going in circles. I realized this is a free game, but PS is going nowhere. Other free 3D MMORPG games like Rappelz are miles ahead of PS, and improving far faster.

I'm done with being a "tester" in a "pre-alpha" game that was pre-alpha years ago, and I'd bet money that it will still be a pre-alpha in 3 years from now, assuming it doesn't die by then.

Roahn hands Tanner some periods and commas.

As for Healing Flash, if it is true that you can now train to 80 in crystal way, I can't imagine any healing spell being worth the huge amount of time and money to train that high. I believe it cost around 25k trias and 250 to 300 PP to train from 29 to 30 in crystal way, and cost increases with level. So how many millions of trias will it cost to get to 80 so you can cast Healing Flash? And once you do, will it be broken or useless like most of the other spells?

Alliva, can you verify what you suspect about Defensive Wind, Rock Armor and Darkness? I have tested the first two many times, and saw no difference, though I have not tested them recently. And, if what you say is correct, they are still close to insignificant and useless in practice.

-Roahn

9
My complaint is that most spells and glyphs are useless, and they are getting worse. The ONLY useful spells, IMHO, are Life Infusion and Missile/Arrow, and to a very small degree, Nature Intuition, Flame Burst and Strength.

Below are my thoughts on all the spells I can think of:

Red Way: Lots of spells, but not worth training above 1.

Strength: Useless. WAS a pretty decent spell, but today I noticed that it no longer "stacks" if you cast it multiple times. Now, it only boosts you once, no matter how many times you cast it. So now, I can go from 200 to 212 strength. Who cares?! Now I'll do 460 instead of 450 damage, for 2 or 3 minutes. This is Realm 2 and requires 20 in Red Way... definitely not worth the effort to train.

Meteor: Useless. Realm 3 and requires 40 in Red Way, but you can't even train that high. Also it does less damage than an Energy Arrow, yet takes about 4 times as long to cast, making it useless.

Flame Burst: Somewhat useful, as it can be cast with only 1 in Red Way. Unfortunately the damage it inflicts does not increase significantly when you train, even to 20. Nobody but "noobies" ever uses it.

Electrotouch: Useless. Does an insignificant amount of damage for only a few seconds. Not worth the effort.

Flame Spire: Useless. Looks fancy, but does very little damage for very little time.

Blue Way: Not worth training at all: only 1 spell

Freeze: Slow to cast, must be close to enemy, and does almost no damage. Useless

Dark Way: No useful spells, don't bother to train it.

Darkness: Useless. Creates a "dark cloud" around the caster. Does this do anything? None that I've seen. Useless

Weakness: Useless. Must be in "touch range" and it takes a long time to cast. Does very little damage. In the past, this was a useful spell in a duel, but GMs would threaten to ban you if you used it, saying it was "exploiting a bug." The effect: as your target became weak, they would begin dropping the items they could no longer carry. IMHO, this was the purpose of the spell... yet it was considered exploiting just to type "/cast weakness" while in a duel. I think this "bug" has since been "fixed" so now this spell joins the ranks of utterly useless. Also, if you manage to kill an npc with this spell, you are not allowed to loot it.

Taste of Death: Useless. Death is a misnomer, as it only causes a small amount of damage. Perhaps a more fitting name would be "slight illness" or "minor scratch."

Azure Way: Not worth training

Defensive Wind: Useless. AFAIK, this spell has no effect whatsoever. I never see anyone use it except noobies that haven't yet learned that it is useless.

Nature Intuition: Somewhat useful, in that you can read someone's basic stats, though it requires a lot of training in this otherwise-useless Way (Realm 2, requires 20 in Azure). Slightly useful, but not worth the effort.

Brown Way: Not worth training

Rock Armor: Useless. Does nothing as far as I can tell.

Flying Stones: Useless. This high level spell does about the same amount of damage as a summoned missile with only 1 in crystal way, yet it requires a high skill in Brown to cast, and is slow to cast. People call it the "flying meatball" because of the silly animation.

Stone Fist: Useless. Realm 3, requires 40 in Brown Way... but guess what... you can only train it to 20!

Crystal Way: The only somewhat useful Way.

Life Infusion: This is by far the most useful spell in the game, to heal yourself and others. However, no need to train higher than 1 in crystal way, as your healing powers hardly progress. Pity.

Summon Missile: Moderately useful. Does little damage, but is quick to cast and uses little mana. Don't bother training higher than 1 for this spell, since it doesn't get much stronger as you progress.

Energy Arrow: Moderately useful. This spell is fast to cast, and does a decent amount of damage. It can be quite useful in a duel, and is the only spell you will ever seen used in combat.

Healing Flash: Useless. This spell, from what I hear, requires 80 in Crystal Way. Last I checked, 30 was the max you could train.

Look around Hydlaa, Ojaveda, in the arena, or in BD. How much magic do you see used? Not much. So, my advice to anyone wanting to learn magic: Don't bother. Train to 1 in Crystal Way so you can heal, or maybe to 20 if you're a serious dueler. Other than that, don't waste your time. This was the case when I started 14 months ago, and remains the same today. I would like to see some improvement in magic, otherwise PS will remain... unappealing. Maybe this is a reason for the following stats (courtesy of Under the Moon) about Planeshift:

Total PS accounts:  340,000
Accounts never used:  112114
340000 - 112114 = 227886 people who have tried PS.
Total characters used less than an hour : 141557
Active accounts older than 30 days:  4297

62% that logged in never played more than an hour.
Over 98% that have tried PS no longer play.

I took a look at this post and then at the posts put up by noobs who can't get out of the death realm. Amazing similarities.

This quest and escaping the DR are completely different situations. With the DR, someone can lead you out, or you can just watch where other people go. If you follow the right path, you will escape the DR *every time*. With this Winch quest, you ask for a quest over and over and over for hours, and still some don't get the quest. I have spent almost 3 hours there, asking for a quest, with 3 different characters, and none have gotten the quest. I talked to another person that seems to be there every time I'm there, and as of this morning, he has spent 6 to 7 HOURS trying to get the quest. This is nothing like trying to escape the DR.

You need to change the filter for what gets displayed. You can get rid of a lot of the combat messages in the options window. You still wind up with the "Rogue is nearly dead" messages but it becomes more manageable.

Yes, I know that you *can* change these settings, but this should be default, if Planeshift truly is an RP game first and foremost.

Quote from: lordraleigh
When not in a combat intensive are, I go with the MAIN tab
Otherwise, /invite *characters you wish to RP with* and GROUP tab for the sake of convenience

But going into a group excludes other people from your RP. I think RP is best when in open chat, so people can easily choose to participate if the RP seems interesting, or walk away if it doesn't interest them. The best RPs are often the ones that start out one way, then evolve into something completely different because of the participation of many others, in often unexpected ways.

I rarely use the game engine beyond the chat tab due to its current limitations.

You have a Chat tab?! I haven't had a Chat tab since the devs removed it about six months ago, thus making it practically impossible to do any RP in an area where combat is taking place. If this game is supposed to be RP-centered, then the Chat tab must be added back. How many of you have tried to do some RP in the arena? Text scrolls off the screen faster than you can read it, when people are fighting NPCs.

Please remember there are quest lockouts per quest and per char so you can all get locked out a quest for a time period because the npc does not need your help.

Yes, but it would be nice if the NPC would respond in a way so we would know this. "Come back in 15 minutes" or "I will never give you this quest" or "Keep asking me over and over again until I finally change my mind."

The current system reminds me of Bart Simpson asking Homer if they can go to an amusement park:
Bart: "Can we go to the amusement park?"
Homer: "No"
Bart: "Can we go to the amusement park?"
Homer: "No"
Bart: "Can we go to the amusement park?"
Homer: "No"
Bart: "Can we go to the amusement park?"
Homer: "No"
Bart: "Can we go to the amusement park?"
Homer: "No"
Bart: "Can we go to the amusement park?"
Homer: "No"
Bart: "Can we go to the amusement park?"
Homer: "Yes"

Please remember not all quests you can get by just asking there are other quests you need to do before getting certain ones. So it could just be you have not done the quest(s) needed before you can get this one or others.

I have already done the Helm quest from the same NPC long ago. If there was a prerequisite quest, it would be nice if the NPC would say something about it, other than "I have nothing for you at this time."

The people that have done this quest basically just stood there asking over and over until it finally gave it to them. Time and repeating the same question thousands of times was how they finally got the quest.

I'd like to ask, what is going on with The Winch? Here's the situation: The only way to get to a new map, called "The Winch," is to do what I hesitantly call a "quest." This quest requires talking to a certain NPC. Unfortunately someone decided that the NPC should only give the quest every 15 minutes or so... So there is constantly a crowd around this certain NPC. A few minutes ago, there were a dozen people standing around, typing "Can I help you?" to the same NPC over and over and over again. I spent an hour last night, when there were only 3 of us, and never got the "quest." Today, with a dozen people doing the same thing, I started asking around. One guy said he spent 3 solid hours yesterday, and he's back today, and still hasn't gotten "The Quest."

Now, I hate to whine about a "free pre-alpha" game, but this just baffles me. This NPC is so stupid, he doesn't even understand you when you say "Hello" to him! I've been playing for over a year, and even the day I started, you could at least say "Hello" and get a response better than "Please use a correct phrase." The idea of standing in front of an NPC and asking the same question 10,000 times in a row is just ridiculous, and reminds me yet again why I hadn't done a "quest" in months. I begin to wonder if it would be possible to make a game less interesting.
