Linux Specific Issues / Lower part of screen keeps blue
« on: July 16, 2007, 08:38:37 am »
Hi,

I have been away for some time and when I launched PS again (0.18 still), I noticed that the blue box with the upside down chars that used to appear in the lower part of my screen now and then now permanently takes the whole screen width:
http://mindsky.de/ps/shot01_070716.jpg
The problem persists with the 0.19 client and I couldn't find any references in the forum (maybe due to wrong search terms).

My configuration: Debian Etch on an Athlon 1800+, 512MB RAM, ATI Radeon 7000 with 64MB RAM (dual head), xorg radeon driver, texture downsampling 1/4 in case that's relevant.

Any hints how to get rid of this would be welcome.

Cheers,

Perhaps you all have been playing too long to remember or you haven't had the thought after all ... but when I landed in DR for the first time I didn't know it was called Death Realm, and my first thought (quite naturally I think) was: oh. I'm in hell. No characteristics of "real world hell" (not that there is such a thing)? Oh, please.

Oh, and I think lots of red and black indicate warm (if not hot), not cold.

Or maybe I'm just different. I can live with that.

Linux Specific Issues / Re: Linux updater

Looks completely OK to me. "Failed to update up!" seems to be pretty normal, and I've got used to the client telling me there are new updates available, even if there are none. You can play, which means it can't get any better even if you managed to get rid of those messages.

Well, I use the xorg radeon driver and it's working fine. I have to use a patched gldrivers.xml (see this thread) since the last client update, though.

oh, yes! just roleplay, just talk with the others and admire the landscape....this is so fun...[\irony]

listen mate, like you, i just started to play, nobody here will help you...the typical answer from the help channel is "find out by yourself, is more fun".

Well, the help channel is the wrong place to ask questions like that. Talk to your fellow players, ask them for advice, you'll find out that the statement "nobody here will help you" is plainly wrong. If you had tried to roleplay and talk to others you might have found that out.

Quote
anyway, even though i've been just playing for 2 days, my advice is: 1. Go and kill some rats to get some tails and eyes. You will find rats on the sewer behind the bar (near the place you appear when you come from the deth realm).

Where you come out of DR depends on what race you are. Some start at the smithy, for example. But no better place than there to talk to fellow players and ask for advice and directions.

Do you use the proprietary ATI driver ('ati' in xorg.conf) or the xorg-supplied 'radeon' driver? With the latter it should work.

Sorry, can't change the driver - I'd lose the features I need for work. If there's anything else I can try that would be helpful, please let me know.

Is the latest client available for download (torrent, http or else)? I would like to install from scratch to make sure it's not a problem created by updating.

*rolls her eyes* I guess I'm just too old for this ... therefore, I'm going back to playing and having fun. Some people could do with taking some things a little less seriously, too, in my opinion. Narf.

Well, as this is not a gaming machine in first place I use a graphics adapter that's optimized for work (2 monitors). Nevertheless, those problems didn't occur before yesterday's update and I really can't believe that it's all of a sudden a driver problem.

Hey Durwyn,

I never connected the word "hell" with religion in PS. And I think in a role playing environment it's downright absurd to do so - if you want to connect it to something, it's death realm (at least that's my association). And no, "Death Realms Dwarves" just wouldn't sound right .

Please, dear GMs, don't be more Catholic than the Pope! (When has this expression ever fitted better, huh?  ;))

Same problems here (Debian Etch, Radeon 7000, open source driver provided by xorg).

Body parts of other players and NPCs are transparent, depending on the armor they wear. Additionally, my inv screen looks a bit unusual, the items have the wrong (and broken) images associated to them:

My guess is that the last update didn't run correctly. I tried and deleted version.dat to download the complete update again, but that didn't change anything.

I would like to try to install the client from scratch, is the latest one available for download via torrent yet?

Same here, if char's a guild member, client crashes (linux). If the char's not a guild member, the crash doesn't occur.

Technical Help: Problems BEFORE entering the game / Re: Update Crash
« on: November 21, 2006, 05:29:23 pm »
If you start the client and it says "0.3.017" in the upper left corner, you have the latest version and don't need to run the updater. If not, you haven't yet executed the .exe you downloaded via bittorrent - do it. If all you have is a file named "PlaneShift_CBV0.3.017.exe.torrent", you haven't downloaded the new client yet. Use bittorrent to download it, then install it, run it, and play.

Cheers,
