Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: PS Client Crashing
« on: December 12, 2008, 11:05:56 am »
Please tell me you did read the file README-osx ... it has a special section about your X1600 graphics card. This card, unfortunately, does not play well with the Cg toolkit, and a work-around is needed. I am fairly confident that a search for X1600 on this forum also will give you some hints as to what to do.

is there a torrent link for .4.03?  I can only find links to .4.02 for Mac on the downloads page.  or are the various modifications you listed considered .4.03? sorry in advance if these are dumb questions but I downloaded .4.02 a few days ago and have yet to make it work.  I've been looking in the forums for info, but all i can find seems out of date or not relevant to my set-up.

You need th 0.4.03 client. Use the psupdater. That saves you from downloading more than what has actually changed. There should be plenty of posts on this forum on how to use it.

Mac OSX Specific Issues / New client -- 0.4.03 -- updates available now.
« on: December 01, 2008, 12:02:51 am »
The new client should again support intel and ppc-based mac equally well. Also, read the file README-osx in mind before reporting problems.

Enjoy!

(from README-osx:)

All user configuration files should be located in

<Home directory>/Library/Application Support/Planeshift/

Hence, references to configuration files that need to be edited, is relative to this
location. Try to avoid editing files in the location where you installed Planeshift,
as those modifications will be lost every time you update the client.

Known issues:

1) OpenAL is now used by default. Unfortunately, OpenAL is not supported
in the 10.3.9 client. Hence, in order to revert back to CoreAudio, you need to
open the file
<Home directory>/Library/Application Support/Planeshift/psclient.cfg
in a text editor, and add the following line at the end of it:

System.PlugIns.iSndSysRenderer = crystalspace.sndsys.renderer.software

If this file does not exist, then just create one containing this line.

2) Some graphics cards have problems with texture compression. If you
experience problems loading the game disable texture compression by
doing the following:

Open the file:

<Planeshift install diretory>/data/config/r3dopengl.cfg

in a text editor. Locate the following line and delete the leading semicolon:

;Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_compression  = false

should be:

Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_compression  = false

Save the file (be sure the file is saved as text only).

3) By default, PlaneShift will go into pause-mode when the window
looses focus (ie: is not the top most window). If you want Planehift
to keep running when the window does not have focus (ie: when you
switch to another window), open the file

<Home directory>/Library/Application Support/Planeshift/psclient.cfg

in a text editor, and add the following line at the end of it:

System.RunWhenNotFocused = true

If this file does not exist, then just create one containing this line.
Save the file (be sure the file is saved as text only).

4) By default, shaders use the Cg toolkit from Nvidia. We have seen
some problems with this toolkit on machines with X-1600 graphics card
from ATI. If you experience strange graphics behaviour, or crash when
attempting to run PlaneShift, disable these shaders:

Open the file

<Home directory>/Library/Application Support/Planeshift/psclient.cfg

in a text editor, and add the following line at the end of it:

Video.OpenGL.Shader.Cg.Enable.Fragment=false
Video.OpenGL.Shader.Cg.Enable.Vertex=false

If this file does not exist, then just create one containing this line.
Save the file (be sure the file is saved as text only).

Finally: please report problems back on the PS forums. Your experiences are invaluable in continued development and support of the OSX platform.

Enjoy!

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: PSClient not opening properly
« on: September 01, 2008, 06:42:30 am »
For what it is worth, it seems that your updater works as it should.

If you could also look at the console log if any strange things happen when running the client, that might be helpful. Better yet, run it from the commandline, and post the results that are printed out. Beware, however, that there is currently an issue with running the client on PPC processors : some maps won't load, and will cause a crash. I have not yet been able to devote enough time to this to find the solution. This problem should not manifest itself until you get past the character selection screen, however, so if you don't even get that far, then it is probably something else.

I want that I can play the game with all territories. For now I cannot play, Arena, Bdrd2 and BD.
Unfortunately this seems to be a problem which persists for PPC-users also with this release. We are aware of it, however, and working towards a solution. Please have patience. :)

Nice to see a proper write-up of what is needed in order to get performance up also on older hardware. Good job!

Fan Art / Re: Exporting Cal3d from Blender
« on: May 19, 2008, 03:04:21 pm »
Blender 2.44/2.45 has a cal3d export filter as part of its default installation, at least on OSX. It was missing for a couple os releases, as it was out of sync with the API, but it should work again now.

You will also see what it is doing if you open the console app, and run the updater by clicking on it as you would any other application. The way you can see it still runs it that the application icon stays in the dock after you have clicked on it.

Try replacing the file data/config/gldrivers.xml with the one you find here:

http://www.faramann.net/ps04/

It might work, but then again, it might not. Also, go over the suggestions in the file README.osx

I swear it didn't work the first time I tried that, but now it does, so, eh!  :P   Thank you!
For the last release I set this by default in the OSX release. This time, however, we are trying to stream-line the release process a bit. As a consequence we try to keep the platform-specific configurations to a minimum. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Planeshift 0.4 (Steel Blue) ready for OSX
« on: March 03, 2008, 11:59:57 pm »
Planeshift 0.4 (Steel Blue) available for OSX:

http://www.psmirror.org/PlaneShift-v0.4.00-OSX.zip
http://download.xordan.com/PlaneShift-v0.4.00-OSX.zip

-----------------------------------------
Known issues:
1) Some graphics cards have problems with texture compression. If you experience problems loading the game disable texture compression by doing the following:
-Open the file data/config/r3dopengl.cfg in a text editor.
-Locate the following line and delete the leading semicolon:

;Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_compression  = false

should be:

Video.OpenGL.UseExtension.GL_ARB_texture_compression  = false

-Save the file (be sure the file is saved as text only).

2) By default, PlaneShift will go into pause-mode when the window looses focus (ie: is not the top most window). If you want Planehift to keep running when the window does not have focus (ie: when you switch to another window), do the following:
-Open the file psclient.cfg in a text editor, and add the following line at the end of it:

System.RunWhenNotFocused = true

-Save the file (be sure the file is saved as text only).

3) Sound appears to be playing at incorrect speed on PPC-based machines at the moment.

4) By default, shaders use the Cg toolkit from Nvidia. We have seen some problems with this toolkit on machines with X-1600 graphics card from ATI. Furthermore, the supplied version only supports OSX 10.3 (Panther) and 10.4 (Tiger). If you experience strange graphics behaviour, or crash when attempting to run PlaneShift,  disable the Nvidia shaders:

Open the file psclient.cfg in a text editor, and add the following lines at the end of it:

Video.OpenGL.Shader.Cg.Enable.Fragment=false
Video.OpenGL.Shader.Cg.Enable.Vertex=false

Save the file (be sure the file is saved as text only).

Alternatively, you can try to download version 2.0 of this toolkit from http://developer.nvidia.com/object/cg_toolkit.html
Version 2.0 should support OSX 10.5 (Leopard), though it is unknown how well it supports the X1600 graphics cards etc.

Finally: please report problems back on the PS forums. Your experiences are invaluable in continued development and support of the OSX platform.

Enjoy!

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: Game crashes after it's launched
« on: February 05, 2008, 04:41:11 am »
First of all: the Cg library that is shipped with the client does not support OSX 10.5. Hence, it can cause all kinds of different problems. Many experience graphics going crazy. However, I would not be surprised if it causes crash on load for some either. Please disable the use of Cg shaders, as stated in this thread:
http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=30575.0

Alternatively, you can download and install version 2.0 of the Cg toolkit. That should be Leopard compatible.

Secondly, you have a graphics card which does not support texture compression. I bellieve that texture compression should be turned off by default. However, you might want to ensure that this is so (there are threads around here which explain how to disable texture compression too).

Finally, take a look in the console (start console app which should be located under Applications/Utilities, or something like that) and see if that can shed some light on what goes wrong.

I hope this helps.

Mac OSX Specific Issues / Re: You are made of everything!

If you have a new iMac, you probably also have Leopard (OSX 10.5). Please try to disable the Cg toolkit, as the one shipped with PS does not officially support 10.5). For details on how to do it, look here: http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=30575.0

am i able to give read/write privileges to the other accounts to makke it work, or should i just always play from the admin?

PS needs read/write access to the PS directory (typically /Applications/Planeshift3D) in order to place configuration files etc. there. Furthermore, it needs read/write access to the root directory /logs. (Don't ask, read : http://www.hydlaa.com/flyspray_upgrade/index.php?do=details&task_id=375&histring=Mac )

If you enable read/write access for all to these directories, I bellieve PS should run fine as a normal user as well.
